Giro d'Italia Femminile - 2.1 (W)Italy, July 5-13, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - July 9: Calcinaia - Prato A Calci/Monte Serra , 106.4 kmLocal Luperini flies the flagItalian champion takes stage and race lead in solo styleBy Ben Atkins at Monte Serra Fabiana Luperini (Menikini-Selle Italia-Master Colors) has laid down her challenge for overall victory in this year's Giro Donne with an emphatic win in her home region of Pisa today. Taking advantage of her unrivalled knowledge of the area, and a very partisan crowd turned out to support the local rider, the newly re-crowned Italian champion was the strongest rider on both of the day's categorised climbs. She finished alone at the summit of Monte Serra almost a minute clear of 2007 race winner Edita Pucinskaite (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung). Italian time trial champion Tatiana Guderzo (Gauss RDZ Ormu) finished third, a further 27 seconds back. "It was very hard today," said defending champion Pucinskaite to Cyclingnews. "All the next days will be very difficult: tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, and Saturday. Three days, very hard. My favourite [for overall victory] is Fabiana [Luperini]." When asked about her own prospects in the overall after losing almost a minute to the new race leader, the former world champion was circumspect and looked to the challenge posed by her other rivals. "Tomorrow is just 9km so will do nothing for the classification," she explained, "but after it's good for Fabiana: two big climbs and a long descent. Nicole Brändli and Bigla will attack and attack." But would the Lithuanian be able to complete her hat-trick of Giro victories this weekend? "It"s possible, it's possible," she smiled, "but the big climbs on Saturday are good for Fabiana. I might win, but I think that I will be in the first three." "She was amazing!" said American Kimberley Anderson (Columbia) about Luperini. "[It was a] really tough day." "I couldn't tell you [about the first climb], I was too far back at that point," she continued. "Just hanging on to [team-mate] Judith [Arndt], Judith was kind of pacing me today so I couldn't even tell you what happened. She paced me all the way up to the group again and to the bottom [of the last climb] and then he sat up and I attempted to try and stay on." Pucinskaite's Nürnberger Versicherung team-mate Claudia Hausler finished fourth, just 19 seconds behind third placed finisher Guderzo. The young German ends the day fourth overall and takes a commanding lead in the young riders' white jersey competition. "I think we are both really good," she said of herself and Pucinskaite, "and there are three more hard days. The time trial of course tomorrow and there are two more mountain days, so it's good to have two of us in front so we can play with the others." However, Hausler was realistic about her team's chances against a powerful Luperini. "I think she noticed she was alone," she said of the front group's catching of the Italian champion, "and in the back we would catch her, and so I think she waited. She was really, really strong today. It's her home mountain here, she lives in the city down here, so it's really her race today. As for her own chances of holding on to the white jersey and possibly challenging for pink: "I don't really like time trials, but I'll do my best," she said confidently. After victory in the previous three stages, sprinter Ina Teutenberg (Team Columbia) lost the pink jersey of race leader to Luperini. "It wasn't really a surprise that I lost my pink [jersey]," she told Cyclingnews, "they were pretty hard mountains we had to climb today." The German can console herself with the ciclamino points jersey though, and is confident that providing she can get herself around the next few days, she should hold it to the finish. "I don't know, I first have to survive!" she laughed. "There are a couple more hard days, but I try to." How it unfoldedThe peloton took the start under almost unbroken skies in the town of Calcinaia to the west of Pisa in the Toscana region. The course was to take in two loops of an entirely flat 21.4km figure eight shaped circuit before tackling the first category Prato a Ceragiola, to finish atop the second category Monte Serra after 106.4km. The first significant attack came after 43km from Danish champion Linda Villumsen (Columbia). She managed to build a lead of up to 21 seconds but was pulled back by kilometre 57. After 60km, 15 riders got clear on the lower slopes of the first category Prato a Ceragiola. The group comprised: Edita Pucinskaite, Claudia Hausler (both Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung), Nicole Brändli, Noemi Cantele (both Bigla Cycling Team), Miriajm Melchers Van Poppel, Amber Neben (both Flexpoint), Maribel Moreno Allue (Spanish National Team), Fabiana Luperini (Menikini Selle Italia Master Colors), Marta Bastianelli (Team CMax-Dilà), Tatiana Guderzo (Gauss RDZ Ormu) and Monia Baccaille (Fenixs). After pressure from Luperini, the group began to split until the Italian champion was alone. She crossed the summit of the climb with a gap of 22 seconds over a group of four consisting of Pucinskaite, Hausler, Brändli and Guderzo. The were followed a few seconds back by Neben. On the decent Neben joined the other four in their pursuit of Luperini, eventually reeling her in by kilometre 89. On the flat section before the final ascent to the finish, more riders joined the lead group until they numbered 21 as the 10.7km climb began. On the first hairpins of the final climb Luperini attacked, opening a gap of 10 seconds with 9km remaining. As the climb to the finish continued, Luperini continued to build her advantage over the scattered riders behind her. The remainder of the chasing group split into several pieces with Pucinskaite, Hausler, Brändli and Guderzo once again leading the chase. Luperini proved uncatchable however, and finished alone in front of a partisan local crowd, taking both the pink jersey of race leader and green jersey for best climber. Pucinskaite escaped her companions to come in 54 seconds later and Guderzo came home another 27 seconds back. Hausler finished another 19 seconds later to take fourth on the stage and a strong lead in the white jersey competition for young riders. Overnight leader Ina Teutenberg (Columbia) finished in the grupetto with the rest of the sprinters several minutes behind Pucinskaite. Despite losing the race lead the German maintains a strong lead in the ciclamino jersey points competition.
