Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 11-20, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 9 - July 19: Menyuan - Huzhu, 168.1 kmKocjan takes win as team-mate makes wrong turnBy Paul Verkuylen in Xining, China The last mountain stage of the Tour once again came to a sprint finish, with Perutinina's Jure Kocjan triumphing over Jackson Rodriguez (Serramenti Diquigiovanni-Androni), but it could have been different. In the final 15 kilometres Kristjan Fajt (Perutinina) and Volodymyr Zagorodnyy (Ukraine) attacked the lead group and built up a 40-second advantage. With just three and a half kilometres remaining, Fajt attacked Zagorodnyy and took a wrong turn directed by an official, resulting in the pair being passed by the chasing group. Fajt could be consoled by the fact that his team-mate won, but was left wondering if he could have taken his second stage of the Tour. A shocked Kocjan was happy after finding out that his third place was indeed a win, even if it was at the expense of a team-mates glory. "I though I was third today, because my team-mate [Kristjan Fajt] and Zagorodnyy were in front of us, but they made a wrong turn," he explained. "When I came over the finish, they told me that I won." Kocjan, a 23 year-old all rounder, was happy to have won after a disastrous beginning to the season. "I won two stages of the Vuelta Cuba in February, and then I fell and broke my arm. I was off my bike for two months." Climbing in the leading group, Kocjan began thinking of the stage win once they crested the summit, with around 30 kilometers remaining. "I am a good climber, and good at a small group sprints," he explained. Kocjan's team-mate Fajt, winner of stage three where he also took the yellow jersey, was angry immediately following the finish. He had made a move inside the last four kilometers and was certain that he could hold of Zagorodnyy and the chasers for the win. "The car turned right and I turned right too," he explained. "I could have won the stage; I was away on my own. We had about 30 or 40 seconds advantage and we were going 60 km/h - they would never have caught us." Philippe Marien, chief commissarie for the Tour was stunned and disappointed that the unfortunate situation occurred, but was required to uphold the UCI regulations when a situation like this occurs. "There was never going to be a good decision," Marien explained. "But they could not win the stage, because the regulations state that the rider should know the circuit, even though that is a bit [of a tough rule]. "This is the less bad decision," he said. The ninth stage took in the Tour's most exciting mountain, a 3448-metre ascent which included a section of 12 hairpin turns lined with thousands of screaming fans. As expected the early break of nine riders was caught on the lower slopes of the climb before the Iranian Tabriz Petrochemical team launched its attack. Hossien Askari attacked and rode to the top of the hors category climb with Tabriz Petrochemical team-mate Ghader Mizbani Iranagh, with the chase group containing Tyler Hamilton, Oscar Sevilla (both Rock Racing) and Marek Rutkiewicz (Poland) trailing one minute behind. Once over the top however the two leaders were dragged back by the chase group. First Mizbani Iranagh was pulled back then shortly later Askari was reeled in. "Last night we decided that I would try and get away on the climb with a team-mate and build up a lead and try to stay away until the finish," Askari said. The idea was to get the time he lost to Hamilton the previous stage. "But Mizbani had a small problem today [sickness - Ed.] and we could not follow through with this strategy. "So we decided that we would just take the mountain points." Overnight leader, Hamilton was happy with how the day unfolded, but will not rest on his laurels until he reaches the finish line tomorrow. "With the help of my whole team and especially Oscar Sevilla we controlled things," Hamilton said. "It's not over till it's over though. I have a ten second lead, so we will stay on our toes and control the situation [tomorrow] like we did today. "I said that I wasn't going to try and follow [the Iranians] when they attacked. I knew that if I just rode my steady tempo I would be ok. When they did attack, I rode within myself and things worked out. They are really explosive so they can get the gap, but after that we pretty much kept them in check." How it unfoldedThe peloton left the start town of Menyuan two hours later than expected after a mix up involving the team hotels saw a number of teams have to return to the city of Xining last night and return in the morning. Once they did get underway the action was quick to begin. A number of smaller attacks were reeled in before a group of four riders were able to gain a reasonable gap of around 30 seconds. Five more riders then sprang across the gap to make it nine. With no threat to the overall in the group, they were allowed to build up a lead of over five minutes. Once the climb began however, the gap began to decrease rapidly as the Tabriz Petrochemical Team began to apply pressure on the front of the peloton. By the time they hit the steeper slopes and the hairpin turns, the group had been reeled in, allowing Askari and Mizbani Iranagh to make their move for the mountain points. Cresting the top with a lead of around one minute the pair tried in earnest to maintain the lead in order to take the yellow jersey back. Mizbani Iranagh was suffering from the effects of a sore throat, and was unable to hold the pace set by his team-mate. He was the first to be reeled in by the chasing group, leaving Askari out front on his own. The fast descent played into the hands of the chasing group, and with a little more than 30 kilometres left to cover, Askari was also taken back into the fold. Once the group was all together the attacks for the stage win began, with Kristjan Fajt (Perutinina) and Volodymyr Zagorodnyy (Ukraine) being the only two able to get away. They gradually built up a lead of around 40 seconds. With just four kilometres remaining Fajt attacked his companion, quickly taking 15 seconds. But his attack would all be in vain as he, following the directions of a police marshal, took a wrong turn allowing the chasers to catch and pass both riders. Unaware that they were sprinting for the stage win, Jure Kocjan sprinted to what he thought was third place behind his team-mate. It was later revealed that he claimed the stage.
