Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 11-20, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - July 17: Xining - Minhe-Ledu-Pingan - Xining, 214 kmVeelers catches them nappingBy Paul Verkuylen in Xining, China The Tour of Qinghai Lakes longest stage came down to a thrilling finale as a last ditch attempt in the final 700 metres paid off for the Dutchman Tom Veelers. Holding off three sprinters as they made their dash to the line, Veelers crossed the line with just five metres in hand to take his first win for 2008 ahead of Stefan Loffler and Skil-Shimano team-mate Sebastian Siedler. Veelers Skil - Shimano team played a tactically astute race today. First they placed a rider in the early break, which allowed the rest of the team to relax in the peloton. As the leading trio was caught inside 20 kilometres remaining they let the Danish team of green jersey Alex Rasmussen to control the bunch, giving Veelers the flexibility to follow any late attacks and take his own chance for the win. "We were working for our leader Sebastian [Siedler], but there was one guy that slipped away about six of seven hundred metres from the finish," Veelers explained. "I chased him down and when I saw that nobody was on my wheel at the 500 metre to go sign I thought I would take my own chance." Veelers, the 2006 under 23 Paris-Roubaix winner, gained only a small gap over the peloton but was able to hold onto his advantage. "I had about 10 or 15 metres and I kept five," he said. Stefan Loffler crossed the line ahead of Veelers team-mate Siedler, disappointed with what could have been. "It was a very fast, long, hot day," he explained. "I wanted it [the win] but unfortunately Tom could stay away." For Rasmussen the relatively flat stage also didnt work out as he planned. The green jersey wearers team was unable to control the peloton on the long run into the line due to the wide roads and a large peloton. In the end he was forced to open the sprint himself, sensing that Veelers move may stick. "I took a chance with 500 metres to go, because I am pretty good at the long sprints, but somebody was immediately on my wheel," Rasmussen explained. "Then when I died he went past me with four more guys." General classification leader Hossein Askari had a relatively quiet day today. Content to let the other teams do most of the work, as they chased a stage victory, Askari remained anonyms in the middle of the peloton. The break away, which included Michael Morkov Christensen (Denmark), Ji Cheng (Skil-Shimano) and Bartosz Huzarski (Poland), became a threat to the jersey after they gained more than two minutes, as Christensen is just two minutes down on the overall. The break gained a maximum of almost six minutes at the 95 kilometre mark. With more than 120 kilometres still to cover, combined with the fast run into the finish, the jersey never really came under threat. How it unfoldedWarm and sunny conditions greeted the peloton for the longest stage of the race at 215 kilometres. The out and back course was relatively flat and on good roads. It took 70 kilometres for an attack to finally get away from the peloton, but when the three riders, Christensen, Cheng and Huzarski did get away, they quickly built up a large gap. When the race turned off the express way at the 80 kilometre mark the trio had a four minute lead over the peloton, making Christensen the virtual yellow jersey. As they made their way through the undulating terrain over the next 50 kilometres, their lead fluctuated up to six minutes before returning to around two minutes, where it remained until they reached the second sprint at 178 kilometres. After Christensen took the second sprint, and the three second time bonus that came with it, the peloton lead by Giant Asia and Perutnina began eating into their lead at a rate which saw them being caught with 20 kilometres to the line. The fast run into the line was highlighted by a number of small attacks, none of which stuck until Veelers got away in the final kilometre.
