Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 11-20, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - July 16: Guide - Xining, 115 kmRutkiewicz plucks win away from Hamilton; Askari remains in yellowBy Paul Verkuylen in Xining, China After sitting back and letting the mountain goats blast over the top of the Haute Category climb of Laji Mountain, Poland's Marek Rutkiewicz caught the leading trio with a group of five riders just five kilometres from the finish. Waiting until the last possible moment he passed Tyler Hamilton (Rock Racing) to take the sixth stage into Xining. Rutkiewicz and his four companions bridged across to the leaders, Hamilton, Ahad Kazemi Sarai and Ghader Mizbani Iranagh ( both Tabriz Petrochemical Team), on the 50 kilometre descent of the Laji mountain. With just 1.5 kilometres remaining, Hamilton attacked the group, hoping to sap the energy of the others, giving Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing) a chance to take the stage and the valuable bonus seconds on offer. Rutkiewicz had a similar plan to attack, but Hamilton's move prompted him to alter his plan. Bridging across to Hamilton, he waited until 50 meters to go before passing a labouring Hamilton and Hossien Askari (Tabriz Petrochemical Team). "I wanted to attack with one kilometer remaining," Rutkiewicz explained. "But Tyler Hamilton attacked with Askari. I chased the attack and caught them with 500 meters to the finish and finished it off from there. "Before the finish I wouldn't have thought that I could have beaten Tyler in a sprint, but he was tired after his attack with one kilometer to go, and I had more power." The profile of today's stage, on paper looked to be perfectly suited to the climbers like Hamilton, Sevilla, Askari and Ahad Kazemi Sarai (Tabriz Petrochemical Team), and indeed it was these four riders who animated the stage. However due to the long descent into the finish those who were unable to keep the pace of the leaders on the climb were able to rejoin the leaders and fight it out for the win. "Over the top of the mountain I was in maybe seventh place. For me it was very hard at the start of the climb. After a few kilometers it got better," Rutkiewicz said. The 27 year old used the experience he gained from riding the race four years ago to pace himself up the climb and within striking distance of the leaders. "The attacks were hard, but for me riding steady was a better strategy." Hamilton, riding in the services of Sevilla, was part of a break on the lower slopes of the climb, marking the two Iranians, Ghader Mizbani Iranagh and Ahad Kazemi Sarai. Initially part of a six rider break, the tempo set by the Iranians, was too high for all but Hamilton. They crested the climb well ahead of the chasing group, but due to the long descent were unable to maintain their advantage until the finish. "We had a good gap over the top. Those two are mountain goats," Hamilton said of his companions. "Unfortunately we got caught. Coming up to the finish I gave it a little bit of stick with a K and a half to go. I tried but no luck." "I am feeling a little better everyday. Yesterday I wasn't so bad on the climb; today I think I was even a bit better. I was just marking the Iranian's. "I stayed with them and kept them in check. Then I got the green light to work with them. Had we stayed away I could have taken the jersey. But I think that we have a better chance of taking the race with Oscar." The yellow jersey holder, although he didn't wear it today due to sizing mix up before the start, remains firmly on the shoulder of Askari after he finished third on the stage. Askari's Tabriz Petrochemical Team could be happy with how the day panned out. Not only did they retain the leader's jersey, they also picked up the King of the Mountains jersey. "Today was a good day for our team," Askari said. "I felt good up the climb. We rode today for the mountain jersey and we took it. "We won't control the race tomorrow. There are 15 riders who are on almost the same time. Who ever wants to go can go. Our team is not so good on the flat. We don't need to keep the jersey tomorrow." How it unfoldedThe peloton was again depleted today, with two riders abandoning the race due to injury. Jai Crawford (Marco – Polo) didn't start while Nick Reistad (Jelly Belly) abandoned after just four kilometer with tendonitis in his knee. While the stage was relatively short at just 115 kilometers, with around 60 kilometers of climbing it was definitely not an easy stage. Things got off to a slow start, but once the peloton hit the start of the climb, it began to heat up. Initially a group of five riders went off the front which included, Matija Kvasina (Perutnina Ptuj), Erik Hoffmann (Giant Asia Racing Team), Michael Creed (Rock Racing), Roger Beuchat (Serramenti Diquigiovanni-Androni) and Wu Chen (Qinghai,China). These five were later joined by Hamilton and Mizbani Iranagh. Later in the climb as the lead group whittled down to just Hamilton and Mizbani, Kazemi Sarai bridged across to the two and drove the group towards the summit. This trio began the descent towards the finish in Xining with a good lead over the chasing group, but with Rhys Pollack (Marco Polo) and Dave McCann (Giant Asia Racing) forcing the pace of the chase group, their lead was slowly eaten away. The 25 kilometer, relatively flat run into the line was all the five chaser needed to finally make contact with the leaders, just five kilometers from the finish. A larger group of 20 riders was not too far behind at this stage, so all eight riders put in the work to remain ahead. By the time Rutkiewicz hit the finish line to win they were only 25 seconds ahead of the group.
