Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 11-20, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - July 14: Bird Island - Xihaizhen, 152.4 kmSweet revenge for Rasmussen as he takes his third stageBy Paul Verkuylen in Xihaizhen, China Showing his class after a disappointing stage yesterday, Alex Rasmussen showed again that he is the fastest sprinter in this year race, taking the fourth stage ahead of Hossein Nateghi and Sebastian Siedler into Xihaizhen. Rasmussen blasted off the front in the final 200 meters to take his third victory in four stages by a bike length. "This was definitely payback from yesterday," Rasmussen told Cyclingnews after the finish. "We planned this whole day, but we wanted to do the sprint for Michael instead so he could get the bonus seconds and get the yellow. The way things turned out at the end it was me who won." Once again the Danish squad animated the stage and had things under control until the final kilometer when a series of attacks resulted in a bit of chaos. "We were going to have four guys from the second last corner and then we were going to go full gas to the last corner and then I would lead-out Michael the last 200 meters," Rasmussen explained. "There were so many guys fighting for position so it was too hard. With 200 meters to go I just went full gas and didn't look back." Hossein Nateghi (Tabriz Petrochemical Team) crossed the line slightly adrift of the Danish powerhouse, but was none the less very happy with the result. "In the last kilometer it was hard," he said. "I don't have the team which can lead me out for the sprint. "I am getting more confident as the stages go, but Alex is a strong rider." Siedler was also caught out in the hectic final kilometer, forced to close a gap before the sprint and taking the edge off his speed. "It was a very fast finale," Siedler said. "I lost my team in the second to last corner. I had to chase hard myself to get to the front which took it out of me. I wasn't so fresh for the sprint." Safely tucking into the leading group of riders was overnight leader Kristjan Fajt. After a tough day yesterday the Slovenian was preserving his energy for the tough stages to come. "I feel a little tired. On the start it was very cold and that was a problem," he said. "I didn't sprint because there were a few crashes and I didn't want to risk losing the jersey. Tomorrow is one hard stage. I have a strong team but there are a lot of good riders in this race." How it unfoldedOnce again the riders faced a cold a wet start to the stage in Bird Island. They would traverse their way, first along Qinghai Lake before heading inland over a small mountain range to Xihaizhen, where China tested the A-bomb back in the 1960's. A number of small attacks in the opening kilometers never eventuated to anything major. Then after an hour of racing three riders, Li Fu Yu (Marco Polo), Lucas Persson (Cycle Colcstrop) and Chen Wu (Qinghai, China) went clear of the bunch. Initially the attack was not making too much headway, but a crash in the main field which brought down a number of riders aided in them gaining almost two minutes in a matter or kilometers. The peloton slowed as a result of the crash as they waited for the fallen to pick themselves up and rejoin the peloton. They gained a maximum of 3'22" at 87km, as the Danish squad was riding tempo on the front of the field. As they headed towards the mountains their lead began to slowly decrease as the pace of the peloton picked up. Fajt's Perutnina team were reluctant to chase the three leaders as none were a major threat to the yellow jersey and a win by Michael Morkov Christensen would have catapulted him into the overall lead thanks to the bonus seconds on offer. With that in mind the Danish squad chased the three down, finally catching them with around 10 kilometers remaining. "We wanted to catch the break-away because it seemed that Perutnina didn't want to defend the jersey, as they would still keep the yellow jersey if we didn't catch them," Rasmussen explained. With just a slightly 10 kilometers remaining to the finish the Danes applied pressure to the front of the bunch. Their aim was initially to put Christensen in a position to take the leaders jersey, but when that failed they turned to plan B - a stage win with Rasmussen.
