Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 11-20, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Stage 10 - July 20: XN Circuit Race, 110 kmRasmussen makes it four as Hamilton takes overall victoryBy Paul Verkuylen in Xining, China The final stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake once again welcomed Denmarks Alex Rasmussen to the winner podium as he claimed his fourth stage victory. Rasmussen, who wrapped up the points classification with his win, raced towards the finish at over 70 km/h to take the stage ahead of a disappointed Sebastian Siedler (Skil-Shimano) and Emiliano Donadello (Serramenti Diquigiovanni-Androni). Tyler Hamilton (Rock Racing) finished mid pack to take the overall victory, his first in a Tour since the 2004 Tour of Romandie. Rasmussen held only a slender two point lead over Jure Kocjan (Perutnina Ptuj) in the points classification heading into the final sprint. If Kocjan finished first he held a chance of taking the jersey from Rasmussen, providing the Dane finished lower than third. The large crowd was well aware of this and gathered around the finish hoping to see whether Kocjan could upset Rasmussen, who had led the standing from the opening stage. "I was thinking about that in the beginning, but then I knew I could beat him in the end," said Rasmussen. "I would rather win the stage and the jersey would come by itself." Rasmussen will now return to Denmark to finish his preparations for the Olympic Games 4000 metre teams pursuit title, full of confidence in both himself and the rest of the team. The rider will return to Beijing next month for the Olympic Games. "The circuit race was perfect [for us]; five kilometers and four corners, you could just sit and relax," he said. "Also the high speed is perfect for the track riders." "Today, Rasmussen was so fast," a dejected Siedler said. "The sprint was over 70 km/h. I dont think that anybody had a chance to catch him today." Hamilton was happy to have secured the overall title, even if there was never really were any tense moments during the stage. The American had expected Marek Rutkiewicz (Poland) to try and steal back the 10 seconds he was trailing Hamilton by. "It is a special win," admitted Hamilton. "It has been a long time. I think that there are a lot of people that didnt think that I could reach a level like this. "The goal coming in was to win the race, whether it was myself, Oscar Sevilla or Michael Creed," Hamilton explained. "A victory for a team-mate is a victory for me and I am pretty sure it goes the other way too. It is nice to repay my team-mates, the staff and especially Michael Ball." Hamilton hopes to continue his progression back to the top of the sport, seeing this win a stepping stone. "There are always bigger and better things, it is like positive dissatisfaction," he said. "I am never 100 percent satisfied." Oscar Sevilla had been the designated Rock Racing leader before the start of the Tour. A fall in the second stage left him bruised and battered, but the Spaniard maintained his high overall position while Hamilton was sitting just a few seconds back. In the first mountain stages it became apparent that Sevilla was not going to be allowed any freedom by the other overall contenders. Hamilton set off with Rutkiewicz in the eighth stage with that in mind and took the stage victory and overall lead. "After he [Sevilla] crashed, he couldnt get out of the saddle as much as he normally could," said Michael Creed, Hamiltons team-mate. Tyler was riding really strong and people focused on Sevilla a bit much which left the door open for Tyler." "It is good to have a rider like Oscar," Fred Rodriguez added. "He is willing to sacrifice himself for his team-mates. He knew he was strong and probably could win, but once Tyler had the jersey, he was able to give everything that he had for him." How it unfoldedA fast and open circuit, lined by thousands of fans greeted the peloton for the final stage of the Tour. The five kilometer circuit was so open that it was almost unnecessary for the riders to touch their brakes as they speed through the final 110 kilomters. Rock Racing with the help of the GE Marco Polo team controlled the race as a number of riders attempted to go clear of the peloton. But due to the fast roads and enthusiastic peloton, no one was able to escape. After half the race had been completed, a group of six took advantage of the tired legs in the peloton and gained a gap of around 30 seconds. The move played right into Rock Racings hands as the sprinters teams then took over pace setting. "It was good when the break finally established so a team with a sprinter would take over and thats what happened with Skil-Shimano," Creed explained. With Skil-Shimano holding the break at a consistent 30 second lead, to prevent any attacks and subsequent surges in pace, it never looked likely that the break would succeed. Skil were chasing their second stage victory and were pinning their hopes on Siedler in the sprint. With three laps to go, the break had been pulled back to with in 20 seconds as the sprinters began moving to the front of the peloton. Just one lap later the break had been caught as the pace began to increase for the final burst to the line. As the bell rung, Skil-Shimano had their entire train on the front as the Danes made their move up the outside. In the final 500 meters Rasmussen blast down the right hand side of the road at an amazing pace to claim his fourth win by a bike length.
