Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 11-20, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - July 15: Xihaizhen - Guide County, 172.4 kmZagorodnyy takes a flyer as Askari moves into the leadBy Paul Verkuylen in Guide, China Volodymyr Zagorodnyy was crowned the winner of the tough stage 5 into Guide with a well timed attack 15 kilometers from the line. While the leaders were looking at one another as the first two groups merged on the descent of the Laji Mountain, Zagorodnyy (Ukraine) sensed an opportunity to take the stage and made a decisive move which resulted in him taking the stage solo ahead of the Perutnina duo of Jure Kocjan and Matej Stare. The first real mountain stage of the Tour was animated by the Iranian team, Tabriz Petrochemical's as they took the first three places on the 3800 meter haute category climb over Laji Mountain. With a 50 kilometer descent to the finish in Guide however, it was an almost impossible task for the leading group of eight, which contained Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing) Ghadar Mizbani Iranagh, Hossein Askari and Ahad Kazemi Sarai (all Tabriz Petrochemical's), to hold off the 18 strong group just 59 seconds behind. It took the chasing group, which included Zagorodnyy, 30 kilometers to make contact with the leaders and just five more for Zagorodnyy to make his move. He quickly gained a 30 second advantage, before time trialing his way past the Chinese Danxi mountain range into Guide. At the finish the group had him within their sights, but it was too little too late as he began celebrating his win with 200 meters to go. "[It was a really] difficult stage," Zagorodnyy explained. "I really suffered on the climb, but the long descent gave our group a chance to return to the front group of eight riders. Once I was there, it allowed me to recover and think about winning [the stage]." Zagorodnyy had thoughts of riding well, but winning seemed more of a dream than a reality. "Before the day began I thought I'd go well; I was feeling good, but the winning the stage wasn't even in my mind. "When [the two groups came together], I saw no-one really looking like they were going to attack; someone was bound to go soon, so I thought it might as well be me - I had just as much chance as anybody else." For overnight leader, Kristjan Fajt (Perutnina Ptuj) the stage quickly turned into a nightmare as the Iranian team forced the pace on the long climb. After just 97 kilometers of racing Fajt was in the third group on the road, 1'30" behind the leaders. Fajt eventually crested the climb over two minutes behind the Iranian trio, which now included the virtual leader on the road, Hossein Askari. With two large groups in front of him, he watched the lead disappear as they put a further 2'48" between themselves and him. He would eventually finish 4'48" and slip to 28th on the General Classification. Sensing the yellow was his for the taking Askari put his Iranian team on the front of the group and quickly distanced himself from Fajt. The new leader was happy with his performance, but holds no illusions that it is going to be easy to hold the jersey until the final stage. "The strategy was to take the points in the mountains competition," Askari said. "To hold the yellow jersey we need a strong team for the flat stages, so it will be difficult. We will try and keep the jersey." The Iranian knows all to well that to win this race, he needs to be consistent and also have a strong team behind him. Two years ago he finished second behind Maarten Tjallingii by just two seconds. "It is difficult to say [if I can keep the jersey], we have some long flat stages and we need strong riders for those," he explained. How it unfoldedFor only the second time this Tour the riders were greeted with fine and sunny conditions. They left Xihaizhen at 10am heading towards the first major climb of the race. A warm and sunny 33 degrees was waiting for them in Guide. Unlike the previous three stages, everyone seemed content to cruise to the foot of the climb in the peloton. There were a few attacks but none gained more than a few seconds. A crash involving the mountains leader, Lucas Persson (Cycle Collstrop), became the catalyst for him to launch the first serious attack of the stage. He took seven riders with him and built up a lead of one minute after 73 kilometers. "I just crashed, then I came back up to the bunch again and I attacked directly," Persson explained. Sensing the danger of the attack, Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing) launched himself out of the peloton with three riders. Sevilla's group eventually caught the leading group around five kilometers from the summit, but by then the three Iranian had already cleared out of the leading group in search of the mountains points. Persson was suffering as the attacks went but still managed to crest the climb in the second group. "We were going quite hard. Then in the final five kilometers the big guys came from the back and it was hard to change speed again. "The altitude made it hard but I had a lot of pain from the crash." With three main groups on the road and just two minutes separating them, there was no time to relax as they began the long descent to the finish. The first two groups eventually came back together, but the third was short of horsepower and only saw their gap to the front grow. With 20 kilometers remaining the leading group grew to 26 riders, as Zagorodnyy made his move for the win.
