Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 11-20, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - July 13: Qinghai Lake Hotel - Bird Island, 120.6 kmFajt's day in the rainBy Paul Verkuylen in Bird Island, China Kristjan Fajt pulled off an impressive victory in a windy and rain soaked stage from Qinghai Lake to Bird Island after a stage long break to take both the stage and the overall leader's jersey. The Slovanian broke clear of the peloton in the first 10 kilometers and was not seen again. Shortly after the peloton left the small town of Qinghai Lake, in cold, wet and windy conditions, Fajt broke clear with Oleksandr Kvachuk (Ukraine) building up a maximum advantage of seven minutes. As the pair approached the king of the mountains sprint with 20 kilometers to go their advantage was just 30 seconds. Fajt proceeded to drop Kvachuk and was joined by Hossein Askari (Tabriz Petrochemical Team) as he crested the climb. From there they used the strong tailwind to their advantage, to keep the peloton in check and take the top two places on the stage and the overall. Michael Morkov Christensen (Denmark) lead the peloton home just four seconds down on the leading pair. "I got away in the beginning because our team wanted to attack during the stage," Fajt explained. "We built up a maximum lead of seven minutes but once we hit the headwind my companion [Kvachuk] wasn't as strong as I was." Fajt proved to be too strong for Askari as well, as the pair approached the sprint to the line, with the peloton breathing down their neck, just 150 meters behind. Fajt opened up the sprint with 200 meters to go up the small rise to the finish and Askari, possibly feeling the effect of the past 20 km was unable to pass the 26 year old, Fajt. Overnight leader, Alex Rasmussen was the victim of some bad luck as he punctured at an inopportune moment and was unable to rejoin the leading group due to the strong cross winds and some questionable tactics by Skil Shimano. "I punctured just before we turned right into the cross winds," he explained. "Then I was caught behind in the second group and was not able to get to the front as the guys in that group were not strong enough to catch back on." Rasmussen initially had his entire Danish team drop back to help him after his puncture, but as they were chasing back he was caught at the back of the group as some riders were getting dropped.Heiko Salzwedel, Denmark's sports director was unhappy with Skil-Shimano's tactics just as Rasmussen, the overall leader, punctured. "That is not normal," he told Cyclingnews. "I am not happy about that. It would not happen in another race." How it unfoldedThe field left Qinghai Lake in cold, wet and windy conditions, facing 120.6km of reasonably flat and open roads. A few attacks were launched in the opening kilometers but none gained a real advantage until Kvachuk and Fajt launched themselves off the front with Yue Tu (China). Tu was unable to maintain the early pace set by the pair and was caught by the peloton at around the 15km mark. Fajt and Kvachuk worked well together and quickly opened up a 1'42" lead after just 20 kilometres. The peloton was happy to let the pair gain a large advantage of seven minutes, relying on the strong cross winds to put the pair in difficulty before pulling them back. This strategy almost worked, but no one in the peloton counted on Fatj being so strong, and able to hold off the main field right until the end. With around 70km covered Rasmussen, wearing the leaders yellow jersey punctured as the Skil-Shimano team applied the pressure on the front. The unwritten rule of waiting until the leader is safely back in the peloton before resuming racing, was seemingly lost on those at the front as they maintained the pressure. Initially Rasmussen had his entire team helping him to regain contact with the first group. When he lost contact with them due to a gap opening between his team-mates and other riders in the group he was left to fend for himself until the end of the stage with just one other team-mate. Although disappointed at losing the jersey, he vowed to come back tomorrow and attempt to win the stage. "I am disappointed, I wanted to keep the jersey for another two stages. I will be back tomorrow to try and win and put this behind me," he said. The strong cross winds caused havoc with the peloton as it split into several groups. The first two eventually regrouped but the third never saw the front again. The two leaders were also struggling in the cross winds, with their advantage quickly plummeting to just 30 seconds. On the only climb of the stage, Kvachuk was dropped by Fatj as Askari bridged across the gap and took out the mountain sprint. From here the cross wind turned into a tailwind and the pair put the pedal to the metal and powered towards the finish in Bird Island. The main filed was unable to get themselves organised in time as Fatj crossed the line just four seconds clear of the main peloton.
