Scody Cup Cycling Series Tour of Gippsland - NEAustralia, July 30-August 3, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - July 30: Mallacoota Dahlsens road race, 93.4kmPersistence pays off for gutsy DickesonBy Rod Morris A fall in the opening 20 minutes of racing didn't stop Adelaide based cyclist Will Dickeson from claiming the lead on the first day of the Lakes Oil Tour of Gippsland. Dickeson, riding for the strong Savings & Loans team, fell in the morning criterium at Mallacoota and although he later required medical attention to cuts and bruises on both elbows and his lower left leg, he recovered to finish eighth behind Tasmanian duo Bernard Sulzberger (Virgin Blue Cycling) and Nathan Clarke (Praties Cycling Team). In the afternoon's Mallacoota road race over 93.4 km, Dickeson was able to slot into a seven-man breakaway group that did some serious damage to the peloton. Malcolm Rudolph's lead was shortlived when he missed the afternoon break. Dickeson featured strongly in both the intermediate sprints and king of the mountain sprints in the afternoon stage and was able to claim the prized yellow leader's jersey off Rudolph and will head the tour when the caravan hits Orbost on Thursday. This year's Tour of Gippsland heralds a new era for Caribou Publications, the promoter's of the Scody Cup. A teams championship has been added to the tour and in a boost for the sport, 14 teams have taken up the challenge in the Gippsland region. Rudolph showed he meant business for the sprint championship when he won eight of the 11 intermediates and jumped to a 16-point lead over his nearest challenger – Will Dickeson. But the strain of contesting so many intermediate sprints, meant Rudolph had little left for the final burst to the line to claim the stage. A nine-man group had kicked clear of the main group and although the cavalry was coming at them towards the finish, they had enough time and distance to hold them at bay. The afternoon stage took its toll on many riders with particular emphasis on the category 3 hill climb, which the field had to contend eight times. West Australian Ben King and Dickeson were the two best credentialed riders that were able to join the breakaway. But both were upstaged by Queenslander Chris Pryor, riding for the GD Triple Play outfit. Pryor, who's previous best race in the national series was a fourth – ironically in the same Mallacoota road race last year, said he was pleasantly surprised with the result. "I suppose knowing the course fairly well helped me, but I'd like to pay credit to everyone in the breakaway group." "They all worked well together and I was just in the right spot at the right time at the finish of the race," he added. And although Dickeson couldn't finish in the sprint finish, his aims were a little higher – take the tour lead. "I was aware of how many seconds I had up my sleeve as I was in constant contact with team management, so I'm not too concerned about not winning the stage, getting the leader's jersey was my goal," he said. Dickeson turned his morning deficit of 22 seconds into a lead of the same time, pushing Rudolph into second, while stocky Tasmanian Daniel Furmston, is third at 23 seconds. The five day – eight race – tour is the first of four events in the Scody Cup, which has replaced the national series previously known as the Tattersall's Cup and more recently the Timbercorp Cup.
