Scody Cup Cycling Series Tour of Gippsland - NEAustralia, July 30-August 3, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - August 1: Bairnsdale crit, 33kmTasmania keeps in yellow – just a different one!By Rod Morris The battle for overall honours in the Lakes Oil Tour of Gippsland cycling race is destined to go to the wire after top Tasmanian rider Bernard Sulzberger moved into the lead. Sulzberger put his sprinting prowess into overdrive in the Bairnsdale criterium sixth stage, scoring enough time bonuses and a podium placing to reel in Praties Cycling Team riders Daniel Furmston and Dylan Newell, who he trailed by 13 and 10 seconds respectively. Riding for the Blue Virgin Cycling Team, Sulzberger, 24, is aiming to emulate the 2006 performance of his younger brother Wesley, who won the Tour of Gippsland. Sulzberger finished third in the afternoon stage behind ace Victorian Leigh Howard (Jayco/VIS) and Kyle Marwood (Lakes Oil Cycling Team). The extra bonus for third place gave Sulzberger a seven-second lead to Newell and Furmston. How it unfoldedThe unseasonably good weather the tour had experienced for the first five stages waved goodbye as strong winds buffeted riders, officials and spectators alike in the Bairnsdale criterium. While the race was only 33 kilometres long, riders were restricted to an average speed of 40 kph – a lot slower than what was expected. Talented West Australian Travis Meyer, riding for the Australian Institute of Sport team, set the early pattern for the race – breaking away and snaring a number of time bonuses and sprint championship points before reeled in by the chasing bunch. From there on, the face of the tour changed somewhat with Bernard Sulzberger challenging for the bonuses and clawing his way back up the leaderboard. Sulzberger won four of the intermediate sprints and was second in another to peg back 14 seconds and with a third placing across the line, edged his way into yellow. Leigh Howard produced a sizzling finish to come over the top of other sprinters to claim his first win of the 2008 series and his fourth in the 13-year history of the series. The tour continues over the weekend with a tough Metung to Omeo stage on Saturday and a criterium in Paynesville on Sunday.
