10th Tour Down Under - ProTAustralia, January 20-27, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - Saturday, January 26: Willunga - Willunga, 147 kmUnstoppable Greipel does it againBy Paul Verkuylen & Greg Johnson in Adelaide German Andre Griepel upset the hopes of the Australians to win on their national day as he took his third stage of the Tour Down Under, once again outsprinting Allan Davis (UniSA). The stage which is well know for the tough climb over Willunga hill, wasn't enough to make a difference, showing that the ProTour peloton has brought this race to another level. Griepel's win also moved him into the overall, with Mark Renshaw (Credit Agricole) losing contact with the 30 strong lead group just before the top of the climb and losing more than 30 seconds over the last 15 kilometers. "This morning I thought if I am not in the front group, that would be ok, but I felt good on top of the climb and we were able to chase back the front group, for me, I don't know why I feel really good here," Greipel said. Team-mate Adam Hansen put in a huge effort to bring back every small move that went off the front of the 30 strong group in the dying kilometers of the tough stage to set Greipel up for the sprint. "That was awesome," Greipel explained. "He chased every rider and did a fantastic job, I think that I can be really proud of team High Road. "I look forward to tomorrow, I think it will be a fantastic final stage in Adelaide." With just the 88 kilometer final stage around the centre of Adelaide remaining, it is looking likely that the German will take the overall lead and the first ProTour leaders jersey of the 2008 season. "Last year I would have told you that would be impossible, now I am the leader of the Tour Down Under, this is fantastic." The stage took riders around the Willunga circuit, first a 40km loop past the seas side town of Aldinga Beach before unleashing the riders on the final climb up Willunga was popular amongst locals who were celebrating their national day. A group of five riders including, Greg Henderson (Team High Road), Carlo Westphal (Gerolsteiner), Aitor Galdos Alonso (Euskaltel - Euskadi), Julien Mazet (Astana) and Renaud Dion (Ag2R-La Mondiale), made their way off the front of the nervous peloton shortly after the start. With the temperature hovering around the 40 degrees mark, the main field was content to let the group go as they concentrated on keeping themselves well hydrated and fresh for the climb. In the 15 kilometers that preceded the tough climb, the group was quickly brought back as Caisse D'Epargne were setting the pace on the front in an attempt to propel their leader Luis Leon Sanchez off the front as they hit the climb. Attacks came thick and fast on the lower slopes of the climb, however, great team work by the High Road team meant that the leaders at the top of the climb only had a slight advantage over the chasing group of thirty riders. With around 20 kilometers still remaining, most of which was either flat or down hill, it was inevitable that the larger group would claw it way back to the leaders. Just 30 seconds behind this large group was the group containing overall leader, Renshaw, which was chasing hard to try and close the gap to the leaders. But with Adam Hansen either driving the pace or bringing back any attacks, Renshaws group was unable to peg back any time as Griepel took his second stage win in a row, his third for this year's TDU, and fourth since he arrived in Adelaide, as he also took out the Tour Down Under Classic, held in Glenelg last Sunday. How it unfoldedThe Tour Down Under's penultimate stage was expected to commence with attacks from the gun, as just seven second separated the top three riders on general classification. That expectation wasn't completely met, as the peloton spent the opening kilometre settling into a rhythm before the attacks kicked in to rapid fire. The peloton charged out of the start town Willunga, setting a hot pace of 70 kilometres an hour as it passed by thousands of assembled fans. A trio or riders soon moved off the front, with Jerome Pineau (Bouygues Telecom), Thomas Fothen (Gerolsteiner) and Volker Ordowski (Gerolsteiner) moved 200 metres ahead of the otherwise intact peloton. The trio wouldn't last long as more riders moved ahead forming a break of some 20 riders. Euskaltel-Euskadi's Andoni Lafuente attacked the group as it headed towards the beach, but he and the other riders off the front were consumed by a forward surge from the peloton. Lloyd Mandory (Ag2r-La Mondiale) then launched an attack and was quickly joined by Benoit Joachim (Astana), Sebastien Portal (Cofidis) and Andoni Lafuente (Euskaltel-Euskadi) before the quartet were again caught. As the race drew near to the spectacular costal section of the course, Greg Henderson (Team High Road), Carlo Westphal (Gerolsteiner) and Aitor Galdos Alonso (Euskaltel-Euskadi) went 200 metres clear of the main bunch. Renaud Dion (Ag2r-La Mondiale) and Julien Mazet (Astana) gave chase, eventually crossing to expand the break away to five. As the latter two riders joined on to the original three, it was clear the peloton was happy with the day's break and allowed it to start drawing out a larger time gap. The five-man break quickly expanded its time gap of 45 seconds out to 2.10 minutes by kilometre 27. Over the following 20 kilometres of the 147 kilometre stage the gap blew out to 4.10 minutes, where the time gap stabalised. The team of general classification leader Mark Renshaw, Credit Agricole, took control of the peloton the leading five contested the first beach-side sprint at kilometre 58, which saw Westphal take full points from Dion and Galdos Alonso. The 4.10 minute time gap held still through to kilometre 60, when it began to drop down to 3.35 minutes. While it looked as if the peloton was set for an early chase down of the leaders, the gap soon drifted back out to 4.45 minutes.\ A crash in the peloton left several riders battered and bruised, with Bouygues Telecom's Nicolas Crosbie sustaining the worst injury - suffering a broken collarbone. It was a disappointing end to the ProTour race for Crosbie who had been prominent in the daily breakaway efforts. As the peloton re-grouped following the crash it began to reel in the leaders, clearly timing its pursuit to coincide with the day's event's grueling Willunga climb. The gap dropped to 3.40 minutes by kilometre 96 before plummeting to 1.50 minutes over the following four kilometers. As the peloton closed in, the lead group of five again contested the final beach-front sprint - which ended with the same placings as the first. The peloton continued to hone-in on the lead group until the pair re-united just two kilometres outside of the Willunga start/finish, also the base of the day's race-shaping climb. At the peloton caught the escapees, with their day's work clearly done, Henderson and Galdos Alonso slipped out the rear of the peloton. With the climb approaching and its rider Andre Greipel in prime position to take the general classification lead into tomorrow's criterium finish, Team High Road attacked the peloton. The bunch began to fracture as it climbed the short, steep Willunga hill. Cofidis rider David Moncoutie was the first to climb 'the hill', a 400 metre ascent in less than five kilometres. The Frenchman was followed across the top by former Tour Down Under winner Luis Leon Sanchez (Caisse D'Epargne) and Belgian Philippe Gilbert (Francaise des Jeux). As expected the Willunga climb shattered the peloton, with a group of around 40 riders gathering out front on the descent while another group of around half the size was behind, with the remainder of the field minutes down. Knowing its general classification hopes were strong, with Renshaw in the second group, Team High Road's Australian Time Trial champion Adam Hansen time trialed the lead group with Greipel over the entire remaining 15 kilometres, ensuring Renshaw lost the maximum amount of time. The increased speed saw some five riders fall off the back and hang between the two groups. With the penultimate stage entering the massive finishing straight, Team High Road put the finishing touches on its day-long plan; setting Greipel up for the perfect sprint home. The German rider crossed the finish line a bike length clear of general classification rival Allan Davis (UniSA - Australia) and Jose Alberto Benitez Roman (Saunier Duval-Scott) to win his third ProTour stage this week. Some 41 riders finished in the lead group, with another five spread between it and the second group containing would-be overall contenders Renshaw and Graeme Brown (Rabobank), some 56 seconds back. A third major group came in 2.27 minutes down, led by Laszlo Bodrogi (Credit Agricole), before the final group of 30 riders crossed the line 11.48 minutes down. Greipel's victory, and the 10 second time bonus that comes with it, puts the German into a seven second lead over Davis heading into tomorrow's 50 kilometre finale. Jose Joaquin Rojas Gil (Caisse D'Epargne) holds third place on general classification some 20 seconds behind.
