10th Tour Down Under - ProTAustralia, January 20-27, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - Friday, January 25: Mannum - Strathalbyn, 134kmGreipel grabs second ProTour victory, Renshaw holds on to the leadBy Greg Johnson and Paul Verkuylen in Adelaide, South Australia Germany's Andre Greipel (Team High Road) outclassed his rivals in a crash-marred finish to claim his second ProTour stage victory on the Tour Down Under's Stage 4. Greipel started out Australia's first ProTour event on high by taking the pre-race criterium win on Sunday night, before following up the victory with another sensational sprint win into Hahndorf on Wednesday's Stage 2. "I felt not so good the whole stage, it was really busy today," explained Greipel after the finish. "There were a lot of breakaways and a lot of wind today, I think everybody was a little pissed off because of the wind today. But at the end we were lucky and second win in Tour Down Under." Greipel attempted to conserve his energy over the course of the day, something that was made difficult by the high heat and humidity as well as the constant attacking in the peloton. Greipel again paid tribute to his supportive squad. "It was fantastic again, everyone supports me very good and at the end I just need the last 12 metres," he said. The Team High Road rider just managed to pass tour leader Mark Renshaw (Credit Agricole) on the line, leaving Renshaw to take second place. Third place went to Jose Joaquin Rojas Gil (Caisse D'Epargne) who beat home fourth placed Australian Matthew Goss (Team CSC) The sprinters managed to avoid the carnage that unfolded behind them when Rabobank's Mathew Hayman fell hard after allegedly being head butted by another rival. Hayman is believed to have broken his collar bone in the fall, while Elia Rigotto (Team Milram) was disqualified for not holding his line and endangering other riders. While his second stage victory came close to putting Greipel in the leader's jersey, after some quick mathematics the 25 year-old just marginally fell short of Renshaw's time. The Credit Agricole rider from Bathurst continues to lead the tour by four seconds over Greipel while Stage 3 winner Allan Davis (UniSA-Australian National Team) is still in contention a further three seconds back in third place. "It was really on there for the first two hours," said Renshaw. "I mean, we were getting hit from left, right and centre with all the power of Team CSC and Caisse D'Epargne, and as it worked out most of the peloton ended up in 1000 pieces, but it all came back together there and most importantly ended in a bunch sprint." Renshaw recalled the hectic finish, describing it as dicey and adding that he hoped his compatriot Hayman was okay after the incident. "It got a bit dicey there at the finish, there were a few corners where I wasn't too sure where I was going but that's always the case when you're fifth or sixth wheel, you're too busy watching the guy in front of your just hoping he knows where he's going. It's really unfortunate there was a crash, it's not the pretty side of cycling and you'd never wish it upon anybody." The Tour Down Under's general classification is expected to break apart tomorrow, with the famed Willunga climb expected to break up the race. Despite the obstacle posed to the sprinters by the climb some, including Renshaw and Davis, are expected to capitalize on the tough penultimate stage and remain as contenders for the overall win. How it unfoldedClear blue sky's greeted the ProTour peloton at Mannum for the start of the 134kilometer stage that would see them make their way back towards Adelaide to the rural town of Strathalbyn, where the local crowd was waiting to present the winner with a piece of local memorabilia. A live cow dressed with a jersey representing the town was patiently waiting next to the podium for its new owner. The peloton was active right from the gun with a number of small moves making their way off the front in the opening kilometers. A move that was initiated by three riders, Nicki Sorensen (CSC), Mathieu Perget (Caisse D'Epargene) and Simon Clarke (UniSA) finally broke the strangle hold that the main peloton had over the previous escapes, building a lead of 30 seconds by the foot of the first climb. Arkaitz Duran Daroca (Saunier Duval-Scott) bridged across to the small group shortly before the start of the climb and set about increasing the lead of the break. Unfortunately for the leaders, the main field was feeling too frisky and sensing the opportunity that the four kilometer climb presented, the big hitters made their way to the head of the field and lifted the pace too high for some. By the time the leaders reached the top of the climb the main field, which had splintered into three groups, was close on their heels. Arkaitz Duran (Saunier Duval-Scott) took the points on offer as they crested the climb, with Perget (Caisse D'Epargne) coming second and Nicki Sorensen (CSC) third. The fast descent was enough for the 60 strong group which had ridden away on the climb to bring back the four riders out front with the rest of the field chasing hard as the gap to the first peloton grew to over a minute. It was too early in the race however for such a large group to stay away, and the second peloton pulled back the first over the next ten kilometers. Shortly after the group was complete a brief lapse in concentration coupled with some confusion in the peloton as they rounded a bend, Stuart O'Grady (CSC) and Christophe Le Mevel (Credit Agricole) came down, however both were able to rejoin the field shortly after with only minor abrasions. The attacks kept coming as they headed towards the first of two intermediate sprints, with Australians William Walker (Rabobank) and O'Grady both active on the front. Once again the field split in two and as Allan Davis (UniSA) crossed the line to take the bonus seconds from Luis Leon Sanchez Gil (Caisse D'Epargne) and Phillip Gilbert (Francaise des Jeux), to move him close to the overall lead, the gap was around 500meters. Jan Robert Forster (Gerolsteiner) took the second sprint in to Woodside after 60 kilometers from Mark Renshaw (Credit Agricole) and Jose Joaquin Rojas Gil (Caisse D'Epargne). For the next 15 kilometers more attacks ensued, but again the main field was reluctant to let any go as the groups were too big and the field ultimately stayed together. An attack by Javier Aramendia Lorenti (Euskaltel-Euskadi) a few kilometers later caught the field napping and he quickly built up a two minute lead. Powering towards the finish, he was rapidly gaining time over the field that was now being controlled by Credit Agricole. As the field passed the 100 kilomter mark, Lorenti was exactly four minutes ahead, the maximum he would get. With Rabobank coming to the front to help Credit Agricole chase, Lorenti's lead quickly deteriorated as they took two minutes in just seven kilometers. With ten kilometers to the finish, Lorenti's day was over as the sprinters began moving to the front of the field. CSC, Rabobank, UniSA and High road took control of proceedings as they prepared their riders for the technical run into the line which included a small climb in the final two kilometers along with a series of corners before the final six hundred meter straight. Rounding the bend for the final sprint to the line an erratic move by Elia Rigotto (Team Milram) brought Rabobank's Matt Hayman, which later resulted in his disqualification from the race. Greipel once again proved too strong for the others taking his second stage and possibly his first ever cow.
