10th Tour Down Under - ProTAustralia, January 20-27, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - Wednesday, January 23: Stirling - Hahndorf, 148kmGreipel wins the dash into HahndorfBy Paul Verkuylen & Greg Johnson, in Hahndorf, South Australia In a virtual repeat of yesterday, an audacious and ambitious attack was snuffed out by the sprinters' teams who set up the finish in typical style, with very little kilometers remaining, for their big guns to fire. Despite many counter attacks in the final 30km it was all together for the final bunch kick and barrelling into Hahndorf was the German powerhouse on Team High Road, Andre Greipel, who took out the stage, followed by Rabobank's Graeme Brown in second place, and UniSA's Allan Davis in third. Greipel, who was discovered by the same coach as 1997 Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich, once again started his sprint from a long way out to hold off Australian's, Brown, and Allan Davis to take his second victory this season after he also won Sundays opening criterium in Glenelg. "I feel good and I am in good shape," Greipel explained. "Last year I was strong as well, but I wasn't able to do well in some races because I had to work for the other sprinters other times I was just not in the right position." "Now I try for myself and I have the support of my team," which has obviously paid divedends for the squad who are still on the look out for a new sponsor after losing T-Mobile last year. Greipel's win took place, ironically in a town first settled by Germans in 1839. "I feel like I am in Germany here. Before the race I thought it would be nice to win here because it is a German city. "I think the people from Hahndorf are also proud of me," Greipel added. After placing second today and third yesterday, Brown, who is on equal time with both Renshaw and Greipel, was awarded the overall leaders jersey. After a count back reveled that he has placed consistently higher than Renshaw and Greipel. Brown was initially disappointed with his second place, but having the jersey takes some of that disappointment away. "I am pretty happy; leading a ProTour event is a pretty big thing. I would have preferred to win, but this is not a bad consolation," Brown explained shortly after stepping down off the podium in his new Ochre colored jersey. "I got third yesterday, second today. I was coming quickly at the end, but I was just a bit late. I am a bit disappointed but they say that the jersey gives you a few more percent so hopefully its good enough for tomorrow. "I am very happy to be leading this race, I am sure that we will see a lot of orange riding on the front tomorrow, like a team should when they have the leader's jersey." We have a strong team, also for the overall. We will work hard for it." He said of his chances to take another stage, although he would not give away who the team's overall hope was. "We wont say," said. Just five kilometers from the start, Yoann Offredo (Fra) from Francaise Des Jeux attacked the main field to quickly build up a thirty second lead. Shortly afterwards, two other French riders, Stephane Poulhies (Fra) of Ag2R-La Mondiale and Nicolas Crosbie (Fra) of Bouygues Telecom also broke free of the peloton. After spending 15km away on his own, Offredo wisely sat up and allowed his two chasers to catch him. Worked well together they managed to stay clear until 118km into the stage, but the peloton was keen to bring it all back and it was set up for another sprint finish. How it unfoldedThe ProTour was welcomed to the South Australian town of Stirling by clear conditions that were obviously going to see temperatures rise above those experienced in yesterday's opening stage. The majority of the 132 riders at the start were predicting the day's stage would end in a stage sprint, while the balance anticipated a small group getting away in the early phases and not coming back. As the peloton rolled out of Stirling Yoann Offredo (Francaise des Jeux) quickly made it clear it was the latter option he was chasing. The French rider quickly pulled out a minute gap over the peloton in the 148 kilometre stage's opening kilometres. Offredo stretched out the lead to 2.10 minutes in no time at all, as Nicolas Crosbie (Bouygues Telecom) and Stephane Poulhies (Ag2r-La Mondiale) gave chase. The French trio continued to pull time out over the peloton as the gap between Offredo and his compatriots slowly but surely narrowed. As the Tour Down Under's second stage entered its 18th kilometre, Offredo had pulled a 6.10 minute margin over the 129-strong peloton, while his chasers were just 1.18 minutes behind. With the day's first sprint points fast approaching, Crosbie and Poulhies closed the gap down to just 200 metres before finally catching Offredo. Back in the peloton Credit Agricole had taken control to ensure the margin to the trio stayed at a reasonable length as it sought to keep Stage 1 winner Mark Renshaw in the leader's jersey. Despite spending the first 15 kilometres off the front alone, Offredo mustered the energy to out sprint Crosbie and Poulhies for the first sprint points. With the day's first sprint done and dusted the three riders turned their attention to the day's only King of the Mountain climb. As the peloton hovered at around five minutes behind the lead group. As thousands of people lined the day's big climb, while hundreds more rode the course ahead of the professionals, Poulhies made it to the top first to take full points from Offredo and Crosbie, who was several metres behind the pair. The peloton, which was strung out from the moderate climb, came across the line some five minutes later. Despite the peloton pulling back over a minute from the French trio's lead, any hope of it chasing down the bunch early were dashed as it let the riders slip back out to nearly five minutes again. Meanwhile Crosbie took his share of the day's spoils at the second sprint, claiming the top spot from Offredo and Poulhies. As Italian Valerio Agnoli (Liquigas) called no joy and abandoned the race, out the front Rabobank and Credit Agricole's riders ramped up the pace on the finishing circuits to bring the leaders back. The gap quickly receded, with the peloton taking back nearly one minute in the next 10 kilometres and then nearly another minute over the following 10 kilometres. With the peloton rapidly approaching the penultimate lap of the finishing circuit in Hahndorf it finally recaptured the three escapees, ending the trio's 120 kilometre escape. Despite catching the three Frenchman the riders hadn't yet settled on a sprint finish, with Javier Aramendia Lorenti (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Jeremy Roy (Francaise des Jeux) and Kasper Klostergaard Larsen (Team CSC) pulling a 500 metre gap by the time they reached the finish line. Having spent the past 40 kilometres chasing down the previous three man break the peloton was in no mood to let another go this close to the finish line and so Dmytro Grabovskyy (Quick Step) and Bernhard Eisel (Team High Road) launched a scathing push by the peloton that would see the attack naturalized. France's Pierre Rolland (Credit Agricole) decided the French riders wanted one last crack at the stage victory and launched an ill-fated attack on the final lap. As the peloton entered the long finishing straight Rolland's attack was swamped as the peloton's top sprinters jumped for a long run to the line. The furious sprint saw several riders burn out early leaving one man, Sunday night's Down Under Classic winner Andre Gripel (Team High Road), claim his first ProTour stage victory. Gripel proved too quick for Rabobank's repeated runner-up Graeme Brown who settled for second place and the leader's jersey, while Allan Davis (Unisa - Australia) took the podium's final spot for the second consecutive day.
