Sprightly Sprick claims biggest career win

GC battle likely over for all bar 19

After joining a 19-man breakaway only 15 kilometres into today's stage, Frenchman Matthieu Sprick could never have imagined he'd be in yellow by the day's end. But that's exactly what happened as the Bouygues Telecom rider broke free from his breakaway companions with three kilometres remaining to claim only his second victory as a professional and by far the biggest of his four-year career.

"I was a bit surprised by my condition," confessed Sprick, a two-time Tour de France competitor. "This is the first serious race of the year, but I can see that my condition is very good and I hope to keep that good condition until the end of the race."

As Sprick had time to celebrate down the finishing straight in Kapala Batas, 21 year-old Australian Mitchell Docker (Drapac Porsche) sprinted to a strong second, leading home a group of 18 riders eight seconds behind the winner. Thereafter it was more than 20 minutes before the next man appeared, meaning that the battle for overall honours in the race's 13th edition will likely be contested by no more than 19 riders, with the Stage 8 summit finish to Bukit Fraser the only one capable of really shaking up the general classification.

Today's tropical temperatures and stifling humidity obviously did not phase the young Aussie, though, who looked surprisingly fresh at the post-race press conference. "Last week we were racing in Qatar so I knew it would be great preparation for the racing here since it was more of a flat circuit," said Docker, who now wears the green sprinter's jersey. "I enjoyed the circuit today, it was very picturesque and the weather was beautiful, just like back home in Australia.

"I know there's a bit of a climb towards the end of the week," he added. "I definitely hadn't thought about the overall. Everyone in the team will be on the attack so I guess we'll have to sit down tonight [and talk tactics]. But yeah, I did feel strong in the sprint at the end which I was really pleased about."

Unsurprisingly, Sprick also refused to be drawn into any notion of maintaining the lead from start to finish - a tall order with 25 teams each containing only six riders. "It's going to be hard to defend the jersey because there are many, many stages left," he said. "On GC I'm not many seconds in front, just five actually and that's not much. We'll see what happens with the hot spot sprints tomorrow."

Joining Sprick and Docker on the podium as Best Asian Rider was perennial attacker Shinichi Fukushima (Meitan Hompo - GDR), who gladly lapped up the crowd's applause as Tina Turner's 'Simply the Best' boomed out across the finishing area. "I feel very good but it was very hot today - it's not easy," said a smiling Shinichi. "I tried to go for the intermediate sprints... I don't think about the Asian rider's jersey but it's good to have. I'm very happy."

And despite today's stage not going the sprinters' way, Tinkoff fastman Alberto Loddo did show at least some of the form which saw him defeat Tom Boonen (Quick Step) at the Tour of Qatar by comfortably winning the bunch sprint from Aurélien Clerc (Bouygues Telecom) and Danilo Hondo (Serramenti PVC).

Under partly cloudy skies and searing temperatures hitting 33 degrees Celsius, 148 riders from 25 teams rolled out beside Alor Setar's central mosque at 10 minutes past midday for the ceremonial start to Stage 1. Today's parcours presented no serious difficulties; the short rise over a freeway bridge probably the biggest climb of the entire day.

After a nine kilometre neutralised section hostilities started early with M. Fauzan Ahmaq Lutti (Malaysian National Team) and Herwin Jaya (Polygon Sweet Nice) going clear almost as soon as the flag was dropped. The pair didn't last long though and were back in the fold after three kilometres as the speed rose to 50 km/h.

Aussie Gene Bates (Drapac Porsche) was next try his luck at kilometre 10, along with Shinichi Fukishima (Meitan Hompo), Jackson Rodriguez (Serramenti PVC) and Sung Baek Park (Seoul Cycling). As these four were hauled back at km 17, 19 riders broke free in what turned out to be the day's big move.

Those represented were: Jean-Marc Marino (Crédit Agricole), Ruslan Ivanov and Jackson Rodriguez (Serramenti PVC), Ian McCleod (South African National Team), Alex Coutts (Giant Asia Racing Team), Yauhen Sobal (Tinkoff Credit Systems), Hidenori Nodera and Tomoya Kano (Skil-Shimano), Matthieu Sprick (Bouygues Telecom), Gustavo Cesar (Karpin Galicia), Matt Wilson and Glen Chadwick (Team Type 1), Diego Nosotti (NGC Medical), Zakkari Dempster (South Australia.com - AIS), Shinichi Fukushima (Meitan Hompo - GDR), Bernard Sulzberger (Letua Cycling Team), Baek Sung Park (Seoul Cycling), Mitchell Docker (Drapac Porsche) and Jeremy Yates (New Zealand National Team).

Sensing a potentially race deciding break, the peloton battled to keep the gap manageable before the elastic finally snapped at km 29 and the gap blew out to 2'52. By km 46 the 19 leaders were well and truly out of sight at 7'08 from the peloton.

Malaysian Cycling Federation rider Mohd Hariff Salleh then launched a kamikaze solo move to nowhere and was dangling precariously between the groups approaching the first intermediate sprint at Kangar after 58.9 kilometres. Unfortunately for Salleh, the break was working well; swapping through and off at 60 km/h as the gap hit 8'39. Matt Wilson (Team Type 1) took the sprint ahead of fellow Aussies Mitchell Docker (Drapac Porsche), Bernard Sulzberger (Letua Cycling Team) and Zakkari Dempster (SouthAustralia.com-AIS).

After 75 kilometres the break had 10'48 on lone ranger Salleh with the peloton at 11'50 being paced by Spanish squad Karpin Galicia. By the second sprint at km 104.9, taken again by Wilson from Sulzberger and Marino, the gap was nearly a quarter of an hour.

Fukushima got his reward for an aggressive ride at the third sprint, with the three second bonus enough to give the Japanese the Best Asian Rider's jersey by the day's end.

As the gap ballooned still further, the 19 leaders were content to maintain status quo until three kilometres out when Sprick's surprise move caught the other's napping and the Frenchman was gone. Rounding the final left hander at 300 metres out, the Bouygues rider had time to spare as Docker took second from Diego Nosotti.

Mohd Misbah Nur showed there's plenty of fight left in the Malaysian National Team, delighting the crowd by coming in alone minutes ahead of the main peloton led through by Alberto Loddo, who won five stages at last year's edition.
