Tour of California - 2.HCUSA, February 17-24, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Stage 7 - February 24: Santa Clarita - Pasadena, 93 mi / 150 kmHincapie redeems High RoadLeipheimer does the deuce in CaliforniaBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor with Kirsten Robbins in Pasadena, California After yesterday's penalty of Mark Cavendish cost the High Road team a stage win, the team was more motivated than ever to get a win in its new home of California. But with only one stage left, it was do-or-die on the tough run over the San Gabriel mountains into the finish at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. But team captain George Hincapie was not to be denied, catching solo attacker Tom Zirbel (Bissell Pro Cycling) with three others and then out-sprinting them for the win. "As soon as we came onto the circuit, it was really hard," said Hincapie. "A lot of people were attacking and it seemed like most of the others put the responsibility on me to chase everything down. I decided at that point that even if I wasn't fresh at the end, I was going to try to keep it together no matter what. Pieper was on the radio telling me that it was my responsibility and I knew that Rory [Sutherland] and Jason [Mccartney] were the strongest guys. I figured if I kept them in check and kept my eye on Tom Zirbel's gap than I had a chance. "The last 30 kilometres were really difficult and it just happened to work out for me," Hincapie continued. "Today was cold, not as cold as Thursday. But as soon as we got onto the circuits it was really aggressive and we warmed up really quick." Director sportif Rolf Aldag said that the mood within the team after yesterday's issues, one of redemption, was led by Cavendish. "Cavendish had the feeling that nothing could go wrong today," said Aldag. "I think that went around the team really quickly was that we would show them we can win." Second place on the line in the sprint Rory Sutherland (Health Net-Maxxis) with an impressive ride considering he was in yesterday's long break. "I think I'm smart enough to know that racing against George to the finish, that I'm not really going to be winning," he said. "But I did the best I could do and I picked the best places on the circuit that I thought suited me best. I tried to pass the responsibility on to the other guys." Astana's Levi Leipheimer rode into Pasadena on the back of his team's train, which had assembled at the front of the peloton to keep him safe as the skies opened up. "This race was more special," said Leipheimer. "The theme of this race was the caliber of the peloton and the amount of stars we had in the race. That is what really makes the race so great. Its people like Cipollini, Millar, Vande Velde, Cancellara, Bettini, Boonen, Friere...the list goes on. We had all the stars in the race and for me to win it is unbelievable. "I told Fabian after the Time Trial was so great for me and my team Astana is because the competition is so great - you're only as good as your competitors," he added. "I think the peloton really made this race a special edition." Leipheimer had a lot of thank yous for his team-mates as well, particularly because of this year's weather conditions. "They did an amazing amount of work and they were upfront in the most miserable, horrific conditions for miles and miles and hours and hours," he said. "That's a job that no one every really wants to do but they did it and they did it well. They proved that they are strong and we proved that Astana is one the best teams in the world." The Bissell team's Zirbel made the most aggressive move on the day, counter-attacking the day's long breakaway while entering the finishing circuits and keeping the remnants at bay for more than four entire laps of 7.2km each. "I saw an opportunity with the break - everyone was looking at each other and I took advantage," a understandably tired Zirbel managed to tell Cyclingnews after the stage. "I was kinda hoping someone would go with me! But once I had the gap I just went into Time Trial mode. I thought it would last for two laps, so I just figured the end of my race was in two laps. Then I got another lap! And so I just started taking it one lap at a time." Zirbel's second pair of four laps were much tougher than the first two, and it showed. "The last two laps were pathetic," Zirbel laughed. "I had nothing left, especially on the risers. I was just praying for someone to catch me, actually. "I lasted longer than I thought I would and then I just kept thinking about stage four, when Rollin took it to the line and sprinters' teams screw it up sometimes," he added. "It was an eternity - I heard 15 and 10 [seconds] - Glenn just kept telling me to keep on it. I was just like, 'keep on top - keep on top'. But the finish line didn't come soon enough." Zirbel was caught by Hincapie and Sutherland, and immediately dropped - mostly because he had such tunnel vision he never saw the catch coming. "I didn't know they were that close and I let a gap open up, but I was able to get back on. Once they attacked [in the end] I had no acceleration," he said. Sadly for Zirbel, the race organizers do not award a most aggressive rider award on the final day, choosing instead to honor a most aggressive for the week. That award, voted on by the assembled press corps, went to the entire BMC team for its defense of Scott Nydam's KOM jersey and presence in the breaks early in the week. Sprint leader Dominique Rollin (Toyota-United) was able to place high enough in the final sprint, just behind Juan Jose Haedo (CSC), to finish with a two-point buffer in the category. This, combined with the BMC team's KOM and most aggressive wins, puts the domestic teams in far better light in relation to the ProTour teams, especially compared to the first two years of the race. How it unfoldedThe tumultuous California weather continued at the start of the final stage of the Tour of California. At one point, race organizers did not even know if the race would be able to cross the San Gabriel mountains at Millcreek Summit as originally planned due to the severe weather. At the start it was a combination of rain, sun, clouds and a mix of it all as the riders rolled out. But reports on the climb said the roads were clear enough to race. Right at the zero kilometre mark, after the neutral section, Rock Racing's Doug Ollerenshaw showed that the team was itching for a result. This got the field motivated and counter attacks ensued. While Ollerenshaw did not make the eventual break, his team-mate Michael Creed did. Also in the break were: George Hincapie (High Road), Jason McCartney (Team CSC), Yannick Talabardon (Credit Agricole), Oliver Zaugg (Gerolsteiner), Dimitri Champion (Bouygues Telecom), Danny Pate (Slipstream Chipotle p/b H30), Taylor Tolleson (BMC Racing Team), Rory Sutherland (Health Net p/b Maxxis) and Tom Zirbel (Bissell). This break combination pleased Astana, who was happy to patrol the front and keep the gap within reason. After the first sprint and heading up towards the only KOM of the day, the category three Millcreek Summit. Later on, with the gap more than three minutes, a dangerous bridging move threatened Astana. Victor Hugo Pena (Rock Racing), Robert Gesink (Rabobank) and Thomas Peterson (Slipstream-Chipotle) shot off the front, and were later joined by Peterson's team-mate David Zabriskie. Astana quickly stepped on the gas and eliminated the danger. Up front, Rock Racing's Creed decided to step on the gas too, doing anything he could to fly the team's flag after a slow start on the week - both for the team and for himself. "I was pretty mad at myself that I didn't make the break yesterday, so I made sure of it today," he said. "I'm still a little disappointed because I spent so much time at the back earlier in the week with the flu." Creed was eventually reeled back in over the top of the KOM, but not before he took the maximum points. Down the other side the fog worsened, making visibility very limited around the tight turns. The peloton crested the KOM still around three minutes and change down on the break, but without any alarm bells sounding. It was much more important to get down the descent safely. This was not the case for Rock Racing's Freddie Rodriguez, who crashed in one of the two tunnels on the descent. A few riders were quite unhappy with this situation, including Rodriquez, who had a few choice words for the race jury. But with the assurance that there were no more tunnels, the racing continued. All the riders made it down the 30-plus kilometres of descent safely, despite the increasingly heavy rains. Into the Pasadena neighborhoods, everyone began to watch the time splits as the gap came down but was still above two minutes. Nearing the circuits the break began to look around at each other. Jason McCartney (CSC) jumped from the break to take out the sprint points to help his team-mate Haedo. This started the attacks, but it was Zirbel's attack that got away. The man from Colorado, nicknamed Thor by his team-mates, held on to a gap for four whole laps around the 7.2 km circuit. But it was not to be for him today, as a strong chase by Hincapie, Sutherland and McCartney kept him within reach. On the final lap it was those four plus Creed hanging onto a small advantage over the peloton. In the final kilometre it was McCartney again going first, like he did entering the circuits. But the man known more for his climbing abilities was caught and passed by Hincapie with Sutherland trailing close behind. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here
