Stage 2 - February 19: Santa Rosa - Sacramento, 116 mi / 187.2km

A scenic start through Sonoma County wine country will quickly turn into one of the most significant climbs of the race as Stage 2, sponsored by Union Bank of California, takes the peloton east en route to the state's capital, Sacramento. Twelve miles from the start, Trinity Road's vertical climbs and treacherous decent into the wineries of Napa Valley will make it one of the most difficult climbs of the entire race, as proven during the 2007 Amgen Tour of California.

With a long downhill and generally tailwind run-in through the valley and into Sacramento, the stage will most likely be another chance for the sprinters to have their glory. Last year, Slipstream's Danny Pate made a suicidal bid for glory before the race hit the three finishing circuits in downtown Sacramento, but was reeled in by the lead-out train of CSC which eventually propelled Argentinean Juan Jose Haedo to victory.
