Tour de Georgia - 2.HCUSA, April 21-27, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - April 25: Suwanee - Dahlonega, 133.4mi/214.7kmBissell flies flag for domestic teams in GeorgiaSlipstream takes overall lead, Henderson remains in sprint jerseyBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Dahlonega, Georgia with additional reporting from Kirsten Robbins The sixth Tour de Georgia came into slightly more focus Friday with the first of two mountain stages. While the three category three climbs would in no way decide who would win the overall, it did show who would not – as the yellow jersey on the road passed from sprinter Greg Henderson (High Road) to Slipstream-Chipotle's climber Trent Lowe, with the rest of the GC contenders within a few seconds. But the day belonged to the domestic Bissell team, with King in the long break and sprinter Richard England across the line first in the end. "In reality I think the decisive point was making it over the second KOM with 40km to go. I felt a little shabby at the start but I told my team I had good legs and when I made it over the second KOM, I knew the short steep climbs would really suit me, similar to my training roads back in Melbourne. England said that he had been itching all week to get a good crack at a sprint, and that today was the day. "I told my team last night that if I was in the bunch in the finish that I needed to go over the last climb in the first dozen. Even if it came back together toward the finish, the first group had an advantage because they didn't have to chase back up to get organized. My team did a good job when it got wet and slick they stayed at the front. I still had six team-mates around me. Jeremy and Ben took me into the last corner before the climb, in first position. I don't think anyone expected how steep the climb was!" England out-sprinted the likes of Rory Sutherland (Health Net-Maxxis) and George Hincapie (High Road) for the win. "I was a little too far back coming into the finish and that last kilometer went by so quick that there was no time to think it was just do," said Sutherland. "Richard got a jump on me and he's a better sprinter than me anyway so I'd rather have a fellow Australian beat me and a domestic team win another stage." "It was a good stage for me and the team really wanted for me to give it a try," said Hincapie. "But I just didn’t realize how close the finish was from the last corner and I made a big mistake coming out of it in third because it was all down hill. I thought it was a little down hill and then mainly uphill and that coming out in third would have been perfect for that. But, when we came around the corner it was right there." Earlier in the day, England's teammate Teddy King was slaving away in the day's long break, taking two second places on the KOMs to go with his second place on day two. The effort earned King the KOM jersey, capping off a perfect day for the team. "It's definitely big, California and Georgia are the two biggest races of the year and like every other team we aim to try and do something at these races," said director sportif Glen Mitchell. "We were a little bit frustrated with yesterday's stage, [with Zirbel] having a mechanical. We know the level we are at and we know we are capable of doing something big. With the frustration yesterday the guys were really fired up to get someone in the early move or get the KOM." Most of the big names made the lead group, including Trent Lowe (Slipstream-Chipotle-H30), who takes over the leader's jersey from High Road's Greg Henderson. "It was a relentless day, I don't think it was easy for anyone, whether you were on the wheel or pulling!" Lowe told Cyclingnews. "Everyone was suffering. Just before the break went the peloton would go up a rise that would normally not be an issue for it and it was just wearing on us. There was never a time where you could get a rest. Even at the end with the little smack which mixed it up a bit." Henderson said he was feeling good on the day, making it over the first KOM with good legs and looking good to keep the yellow jersey. But on the start of the second KOM the lights went out for the Kiwi. "I was feeling great and then all of a sudden! On the second KOM, I don't know what happened... it was low sugars or something. Then once I got hold of the gels and Coke I was fine. It was amazing how quickly it turned from good to bad! I haven't had that for a while, ya know? I started asking team-mates for sugar but it was too late by then." Still Hendy said he is feeling confident for Sunday's circuit race, which is sure to end in a field sprint. But before that day comes, Hendy and the rest of the field will need to make to the top of Georgia, also known as Brasstown Bald mountain. That is sure to decide the overall winner of the race. Slipstream-Chipotle has the race lead, and four potential winners in Lowe, former winner Tom Danielson, last year's second place Christian Vande Velde and, according to director sportif Jonathan Vaughters, maybe even mustache-clad Dave Zabriskie. "You never know with Zabriskie, he could win tomorrow," Vaughters told Cyclingnews. Maybe he's hiding something under the mustache! Christian is going well too, so it's those four guys. But if I were to pick someone to put a tad more focus on it's Trent." Trent Lowe rode well here in 2004 with the Jittery Joe's squad, which helped get him noticed by then-Postal director Johan Bruyneel. So it would be fitting for him to return to win it, though he has no delusions of grandeur. "It would be awesome but tomorrow is hard day – that is what it is all going to come down to, whoever has the legs!" Today's stage was not quite as difficult as it had been in previous years – and a lot of big names finished in the field sprint, including Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing), Levi Leipheimer (Astana) and Bobby Julich (CSC) – so anything is still possible tomorrow. How it unfoldedThe start of the fifth stage, in Suwanee, saw action even in the neutral section. A race photo motorcycle collided with two pedestrians who had stepped out into the roadway. The driver, photographer and both pedestrians were taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries. With that out of the way, it was on for the first actual climbing stage of the race. Again the peloton moved at a brisk pace, which kept any breaks from gaining more than 10-15 seconds. This has been the theme every day as nobody wants another repeat of last year's 29 minute breakaway. But about 65 km into the stage, a group of four domestic team riders got together, giving the rest of the peloton a happy carrot to follow. Cameron Evans (Symmetrics), Edward King (Bissell), Tim Johnson (HealthNet-Maxxis) and Valery Kobzarenko (Team Type 1) built a 40 second lead pretty quickly, and as soon as the numbers were checked by the major team's directors, it was up over two minutes in no time. The four worked quite well together, taking rather even pulls that lasted 20-30 seconds each. It was not until the first KOM that any separation occurred when Kobzarenko went for the points. But on the descent it was back to business as usual for the quad, putting a maximum of seven minutes on the field. Astana started the pace-making, with a little help from Slipstream-Chipotle and High Road. This kept the break within reach as the kilometers ticked off to the next KOM, 75km away. By the time the break reached the second KOM, the gap was trimmed to under three minutes. But the four still looked rather fresh, staying seated on the climb and not rocking their shoulders. So it was no surprise that the gap went up to four minutes again on the way towards Dahlonega. This must have set off the alarm bells in the field as inside 10km from the finish the gap was back down to under two minutes. The last five kilometers of the stage was a roller coaster, both in terms of terrain and drama. The last KOM sat just two kilometres from the finish, and it was steep little tease with pitches up to 15 percent. As the break turned onto the final road of the KOM, the field had them in sight. At this point, Johnson made the move that would earn him the most aggressive rider award on the day. He was aided by both a mechanical pause by King and a little information from his former team director-turned assistant race technical director, Jeff Corbett. "It was a good time to go because King had a problem with his chain and every one was looking at him and I just decided to go at that point and see what would happen. My old director Jeff Corbett told me that if I got over the last climb ahead than there might be a chance I would stay away. I had no idea how far back the field was so I just had to give it everything to see what would happen." "It was a violent attack," he added. "When you are on a climb and you see that many fans clustered together, you know it is going to hurt really badly if it's a climb or your probably going to crash if it's a descent. When I turned that corner I tried to hang on as best I could but I dumped every last bit of energy I had into that last attack." But the lactic acid won the battle and the fast-moving field, setting up the sprinters for the final kilometer, swallowed him whole. From there it was a nasty descent with tight, off-camber turns that nearly sent some of the motorcycles off route. But the riders had no problem, and rode into Dahlonega with no problem. Richard King led the charge up the final turn at 150 meters, knowing that the downhill after would launch him up to the line for the win. Tomorrow's penultimate stage will easily decide who will wear the leader's jersey into Atlanta. And you will find out who it is first by following Cyclingnews' up-to-the-kilometer live coverage, starting at 11:00 A.M. EDT. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here
