Slipstream flexes team TT muscles in Georgia

High Road retains overall, Lowe new best young rider

The unique team time trial of the Tour de Georgia, held on the Road Atlanta motor racing track sans time trial equipment, was a showcase for the fans with teams riding four laps of the four kilometre circuit. But the varying terrain of the course - which is no problem for the high-octane super machines that call this track home - made for surprisingly interesting racing. Slipstream-Chipotle impressed the crowds with organized tactical riding which made the difference, taking the win ahead of Astana and High Road.

Each lap some riders would pop off the back of their respective echelons, usually on the climb. For some, this was not the intended plan - as with Santiago Botero (Rock Racing) who came off on the second lap. But for others, strategy made the difference - as with Slipstream-Chipotle who used riders such as Danny Pate on the final lap in a lead-out fashion, finishing with only the required four to take the win.

"I think we did a pretty good job of performing at our pace," said Pate. "We planned on losing a couple of guys in order to set up for the fastest time possible. When it comes to a team time trial it's a lot about how smooth you can ride and at what pace you can ride at. If you start out too fast then you are not going to do that well."

While the team did put its four best general classification riders across the line first, it did sacrifice the best young rider jersey of Tyler Farrar to do so. "We were planning to only use me and Lucas but we ended up using Tyler too," said Pate. "In the end all we wanted to do was win the stage, but it would have been nice to keep Tyler. First and foremost we were going after the stage win and we accomplished that."

Team director Jonathan Vaughters, who arrived in Georgia last night, said the plan was to put both Lowe and Danielson into position for the next two climbing stages. "We had planned that Lucas and Danny would peel off but Tyler just wasn't quite on the ride and we had to make a split second decision of whether or not to sacrifice three-four seconds to keep Tyler with us and in the jersey or to just go for the extra time for Trent and Tom. So we decided to go for the extra time for Trent and Tom."

The Astana team seemed to be on course to blow the other teams out of the water after setting the fastest first lap time by three seconds over High Road with a 4:57. But the team lost some organization in doing so and had to pull back the pace to keep all the riders, slowing by seven seconds on the second lap and turning a 5:01 on the third lap, before pulling it together on the final lap for the second fastest on the day at 4:52.

"[We were] spread out because everyone was trying to pull at once and so no one was recovering so we had to slow down," said Leipheimer. "It was just a matter of some guys being stronger and some guys being weaker than others in the rotation. We lost a big chunk of time on some parts but when we got down to the last lap we had our core group of guys and what I heard was that we were fastest in the whole race, maybe we should have just started with those guys."

"All of us were biting our nails, especially when Astana went through six seconds faster on the first lap," said Tom Danielson. "I remember thinking on the first lap I was totally thinned and I don't think I could have gone any faster. So six seconds is a lot and I thought oh man! You can see the experience from a guy like Zabriskie who kept us smooth and calm and that really paid off with a victory. When High Road and Astana were out on course, I think I used more energy being nervous and sitting by the radio, watching the TV screen than I did in the actual race."

High Road also rode impressively, especially down a man and with two sprinters on the team. The overall race leader, sprinter Greg Henderson, led the team across the line. "Whoever came off the hill basically, it was just go full gas too the line," he said about being first. "We tried to keep it as smooth as possible. I might have gotten a little carried away up the hill - it's such a short but steep climb, it is really hard to judge it. We have some really strong guys but it's a really hard job for me anyways to hang on to them for 20 minutes. For a sprinter to make it to the line I was quite happy with it."

Henderson said that picking gears was a tough call as well. "It was such a changing course - we were in the small ring going up the climb and then in the 54-11 on the downhill. It's different in warm-up - you try your gears out and say, 'Oh this feels fine'. But when you hit it with legs loaded with lactic [acid] it's a different climb. We were unfortunate to be pipped at the post basically."

Despite the win by Slipstream, Leipheimer is surely still the favourite with two tough climbing stages to go. "I didn't see Slipstream race but they beat us and I think it proves that they did their homework," he said. "They went fast today so that's all I can say. Trent [Lowe] is a good rider, but cycling is a long process and you have to take it step-by-step and for him to really challenge would be a big step. But, we can't let him get any time tomorrow and I don't think I would count him as being one of the most dangerous on Brasstown."

Lowe took over the best young rider jersey from team-mate Tyler Farrar, and is in good position to challenge for a general classification spot. "It was not something we were thinking of, but it's a bonus," said Lowe. "Tyler had it before me and we get to keep it in the team, so that is good."

"Brasstown Bald is a drag race, so whoever has the legs there is going to be it for the overall," Lowe told Cyclingnews about his chances. "We can probably feed off each other a bit but Levi is going to be tough to beat, and Chris Horner is looking pretty fit as well. We'll work out our strategy over the next two days - I don't know how much tomorrow is really going to change GC too much, but you never know with Johan, he is really crafty with tactics. I'm sure he is going to be pretty innovative with the race plan in the next few days."

Lowe said one of the keys to the win was the cooling effort of team physiologist Alan Lim, who had the guys wear ice vests during the warm-up period. "We've done some pretty innovating things with Alan Lim like his ice vest," he said. "I think some people were laughing at it, but then can laugh all they want when you win."

One of the surprises of the day was 2002 time trial world champion Santiago Botero (Rock Racing) dropping off his team on just the second lap. Botero was so upset with his race he declined to talk to the media. But Leipheimer warned about counting him out. "I know that guy and he will give it everything tomorrow," said Leipheimer. "He will be firing all day long, no doubt! Maybe Brasstown is too steep for him, but I have seen him down on GC before in past races and he can bring it all back in one day."

As for Henderson's thoughts on keeping the leader's jersey for at least one more day, the affable Kiwi said he would see what the team wants him to do. "I don't know the climbs to be honest," he said. "It depends on if they want me to work or if they see if I can get over it - it doesn't bother me either way. I am more than happy to lay it on the line for the team, seeing as they have done it for me the last couple of days. I don't mind to pay back for the sprinting, no worries!"

Before the racing started today, a Le Mans car and a race motorcycle took a few laps of the course, to show the cycling fans the speeds that the course is used to hosting. After the race a course worker came over the loudspeaker in the media room and said, "The average speed of the race winner today was 30 miles per hour. That is just a mere 100 miles per hour off the course record!"

Road Atlanta has played a significant role in American motorsport since opening in 1970. After playing host to the legendary Can-Am series for many years the track held NASCAR's first Busch series road race in 1986. The track was purchased and upgraded by American automotive mogul Don Panoz 12 years ago and has since hosted rounds of the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) league and more recently the American Le Mans Series. The venue was recently upgraded to the safety standards required to hold motorcycle races.
