Sprinters delight in short, flat Georgia opener

The opening stage of the Tour de Georgia was a short, flat out-and-back leg-opener for the peloton. While the flat profile of the stage meant ideal conditions for the sprinters, and at only 113km in length, just about any rider in the peloton could have aspirations for the win. A narrow and winding final sprint with so many riders made for some dicey maneuvers, but it was Toyota-United's Ivan Dominguez who emerged for the win and the first leader's jersey.

"I came through the chicane out front and I looked back and the distance between me and the others stayed the same, so I guess I was pretty fast," a smiling Dominguez told Cyclingnews. "It was a little dangerous but I felt safe for the most part. The last part was a pain, it was fast and there were people all over the place. Guys were trying to get their sprinters up to the front."

"I was sitting there trying to stay relaxed and telling my guys to stay relaxed and don't worry about the other sprinters, we go in the right moment. Henk went with a kilometer to go and he got stuck behind George Hincapie so with five hundred meters to go, Dominique had to go and I stayed on his wheel until two hundred meters and came out around him on the right."

"Gerolsteiner and High Road were doing most of the work trying to push everyone away," Toyota-United's Dominique Rollin told Cyclingnews. "It was dangerous with guys trying to push each other out, so we just followed the swarm. Henk [Vogels] brought me up with about 500 meters with Ivan on my wheel, and I knew he could hold it. I looked back and saw him and Hilton [Clarke] on my wheel so it was perfect."

A surprising second was Jelly Belly's new Australian acquisition, Nicholas Sanderson. "I had a team-mate up the road and that took pressure off me," he said about the set-up. "I had my team around me in the end and with about three hundred meters to the end I jumped on Dominguez wheel and couldn't quite come over the top of him."

Sanderson, who hails from Victoria, came to the U.S. and Jelly Belly in a roundabout way. "I was a member of the junior world championships in the team pursuit in 2002," he said. "I signed a contract with Davitamon-Lotto but I got injured, so I sort of had 2006 off with that injury. Then I joined up with the Australian national team. I hooked up with Jelly Belly because I knew [Danny] Pate and he got me in touch with this team last year. I'm really happy to be in America."

Absent from the final meters of the sprint was High Road, with two fast sprinters in Greg Henderson and André Greipel. "I was up there until about the 1km banner. Just as George hit the gas, Greipel lost the wheel and then it was 800 meters to go and we were thirty [places] back, so I just had to go on my own on the left.," said Henderson. "You can't win from thirtieth even though I was going full gas up the side, it's just too many places to make up."

Despite the miscalculation in the sprint, Henderson did take a first and a second in two of the intermediate sprints and finished eighth in the final, showing he is sprinting well. "I'm happy with my top-end speed," he said. As for whether he will be aiming for the points jersey, Henderson said, "It all depends on how the GC plays out, but it's always in the back of my mind."

Hincapie did what he could to start the lead-out for 'Hendy' and Greipel because he knew he would not have enough to contend for the finish. "I'm pretty tired from the Classics and I was really tired after Roubaix, so I don't know what I'll be doing this week," he said about a possible GC place. "I'll go back to Spain after this week and take a break."

Also absent from the sprint was CSC's go-to sprinter Juan Jose Haedo, who was hampered by one of the many flat tyres in the run-in to the finish. This combined with a still-healing wrist fracture suffered during training a few weeks ago kept him from contesting the sprint today. "I had a flat and then I was trying to decide if I wanted to sprint," he said. "I had a fractured hand and it still hurts. More than anything it [hurt] on the bumps; and I don't think I can afford another crash right now, so I have to be more careful."

Tomorrow's second stage begins north in Statesboro and then skirts along the state of South Carolina before finishing into Augusta, the start of the race in 2006. Only one KOM is on offer tomorrow, a short category four on the finishing circuit. Two intermediate sprints and the final sprint have time bonuses that could see the change of the yellow jersey.

How it unfolded

119 riders rolled out from Tybee Island under brilliant blue skies and mild temperatures. The only rider not to start was Jon Devine (Team High Road) who fell ill and could not make the trip to Georgia. Health Net's Kirk O'Bee stepped in for Phil Zajicek after the latter did not receive a therapeutic use exemption for medicine to treat his Crohn's disease from the UCI in time for the race. After a neutral parade lap around the island, the peloton headed inland, passing Fort Pulaski on their way across Mcqueens Island along highway 80. Tom Zirbel was the first rider to attack just 14 miles into the stage, but he was quickly brought back on the flat, fast road.

Matthew Crane (Health Net Presented By Maxxis) and Mike Sayers (BMC Racing Team) were the next to go, with the BMC team continuing its aggressive tactics seen earlier in the year at the Tour of California. Yilin Liu (GE Trek - Marco Polo) bridged across, but this move was also short-lived since the first intermediate sprint was approaching.

Just 22.1 miles into the stage, Greg Henderson (High Road) took the first sprint bonus ahead of Tyler Farrar (Slipstream) and Ivan Stevic (Toyota United). The sprint was countered by Mike Sayers (BMC Racing Team), Eric Wohlberg (Symmetrics Cycling Team) and Trent Wilson (Jittery Joe's Pro Cycling Team), who were joined by Valery Kobzarenko (Team Type 1). The four men gained only 15 seconds before the lead-outs for the second intermediate sprint closed down the gap.

Matt Cooke (Health Net) attacked solo before the second sprint and opened up a promising lead only to be mowed down by the sprint freight train. Farrar took the three second bonus ahead of Henderson and Stevic, putting Farrar and Henderson tied for the 'virtual' lead with five bonus seconds apiece.

After the mid-way point of the race, four riders attacked: Garrett Peltonen (Bissell Pro Cycling), Scott Nydam (BMC Racing Team), Christian Meier (Symmetrics Cycling Team) and Bernard Van Ulden (Jelly Belly Cycling Team), and were joined by Health Net's Frank Pipp. The five riders established a solid gap, and, sensing the danger, Toyota launched Stevic up the road to join in the fun. Now six, the lead group set out building its advantage over the next several miles as the peloton digested its lunch.

The leaders built up just over one minute before the Gerolsteiner, High Road, Astana and Slipstream teams began putting some effort into the chase. That advantage lasted until the final intermediate sprint with 11 miles to go, where Meier just held off a charging Ivan Stevic to take the bonus, with Peltonen in third.

Once inside the 10 mile to go mark, the peloton began chasing in earnest. The gap plummeted, and sensing the danger, the break began attacking itself. Peltonen, Van Ulden and Nydam were the last three to survive, and once the Bissell rider lost contact, the rest were quickly reeled in.

As the peloton thundered into historic downtown Savannah, Rock Racing took control in an attempt to deliver Fred Rodriguez to victory. They had to battle with High Road, Gerolsteiner and Slipstream for control of the front, but once Tyler Farrar suffered an untimely puncture, the argyle Slipstream squad pulled its men off the front.

High Road made a strong push coming into the final kilometre to set up Henderson for the GC lead on time bonuses, but before the 'red kite', the Gerolsteiner train rumbled past and seized the lead. It looked like a sure win for the speedy German Robert Förster, but with a bumpy, narrow, technical final 500m, the Gerolsteiner man lost his advantage and was easily passed by Ivan Dominguez and then pipped at the line by Jelly Belly's Australian sprinter, Nic Sanderson.
