Tour of Missouri - 2.1USA, September 11-16, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Stage 6 - September 16: St. Louis, 119 kmDominguez dashes to bookend win in MissouriRollin sprints onto GC podium, Hincapie takes final American tour for DiscoveryBy Mark Zalewski with Kirsten Robbins in St. Louis, Missouri After a week of surprising crowds and clear weather, the Tour of Missouri rolled into its final stop with a circuit race in downtown St. Louis. George Hincapie (Discovery Channel) needed to only roll around in the peloton to claim his best overall stage race victory. But that did not mean the racing was going to be boring, as the races within the race for the sprint and other podium spots was as close as could be - not to mention the final chance for a stage win. Despite a team plagued with bad luck all week, stage one winner Ivan Dominguez (Toyota-United) did the double, bookending his tour with another field sprint victory. "It was hectic because all of the riders wanted to get a stage win," said Dominguez. "It was the last chance for them. But even though I already won a stage I was still hungry to win today! "Coming to the last turn I was 20th wheel and I lost some places," he said. "I jumped out and sprinted to the front but then I slowed down because it was too early and I thought everyone was going to try to pass me. I jumped again a second time and got a gap and went for it." Finishing second was Symmetrics rider Andrew Pinfold, who was second for the second time this week. "He's better than me," said Pinfold following Dominguez's victory. "In my head I didn't think about the sprint, just do it, don't think. I followed his wheel and hesitated through the chicane a little but it was good. Dominguez and I were 20th with about 500 metres to go but I just stayed on his wheel and the holes opened up and we went. I'm happy to get second it's a special day being my one year anniversary with my wife." Even though it was another runner-up for the team, the effort reflects well on an up-and-coming team like Symmetrics. The exciting finish was put on hold for a moment when Brad Huff (Slipstream-Chipotle) collided with the barricades at 50 metres, flipping over his bike in dramatic fashion. Huff had tried to stay on the inside left of Dominguez, but the barriers moved right with the road and the Missouri native ran out of room. Luckily Huff was able to get up and roll to the finish along with team-mate Mike Friedman, who also went down. "We tried to set up Brad, but it was so fast into the final kilometre," said Friedman. "It was like 70 kph and we just got swarmed in the final two turns." Also exciting was the race between fourth placed overall Dominque Rollin (Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada) and third placed David Cañada (Saunier Duval-Prodir) only one second ahead. After Rollin won the first intermediate sprint just ahead of Cañada, it was down to the finish sprint. "With one kilometre to go I had two team-mates left with me and I jumped at a good moment," said Rollin. "They did an amazing job to keep me up there. Jesse [Anthony] dropped me off with 300 metres to go and it may have been a little too soon but it worked out perfect. I am happy with my accomplishment here." Overall winner Hincapie was delighted with his win, as it is the last for the Discovery Channel team on US soil. He was especially appreciative of the fan turnout and support the entire week. "They are happy to have us here and the whole week the fans have been thanking us and the guys aren't really used to that," he said. "So it has been a really special race for us." "We brought a great team here because it is the last race we do as a team here in the US and so it was very important for us to bring a strong team and try to get the win," he added. "Fortunately I got in a great break away on the second stage and was able to hold onto that. Having a guy like Contador and the whole Tour de France team working for me, it was really special. I will definitely miss all the guys in the next couple of years." The best overall team went to Slipstream-Chipotle, as did the best young rider with Steven Cozza and second overall with Will Frischkorn. "It has been an exciting week for the entire team," said Frischkorn. "We have all made the jump to where we are expected to be next year. It's been a big week for us and I think it shows we are going to be ready to replace Discovery and the top American team in Europe." The KOM classification had already been sewn up by Health Net-Maxxis' Jeff Louder, but the most aggressive overall was decided today by the media, with Tecos' Colombian rider John Fredy Parra taking the honour. "We are really happy and proud to be able to race here," he said. "We wanted to come into this race and be as aggressive as possible. We have a lot of confidence." How it unfoldedThe final circuit race of the Tour of Missouri might seem unexciting on paper, especially with the winner all but locked on George Hincapie. But the battle two places down for the final podium spot was almost as exciting, with Dominique Rollin (Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada) just one second down on David Cañada (Saunier Duval-Prodir) and three intermediate sprints carrying time bonuses before the finish. From the gun, attacks went but it was all Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada riding a strong tempo to keep the race together until at least the first sprint. With one kilometre to go to the line on Euclid Street it was Kodak Gallery followed closely by Saunier Duval - Rollin shadowed by Cañada. But Kodak Gallery's lead out was perfect for Rollin, who finished just ahead of Cañada, locking the two together for third. However, by virtue of the tiebreaker, Cañada still held the podium spot, meaning that Rollin would have to either take another intermediate sprint or finish in the top five ahead of Cañada. Unfortunately, this information did not come over radio tour before the peloton had let a break get up the road, containing Bernard Van Ulden (Navigators Insurance), Jeremy Venell (DFL-Cyclingnews-Litespeed), Fausto Marcelino (Tecos) and Tyler Wren (Colavita-Sutter Home). Jonathan Garcia (Team BMC) tried to bridge across but never quite made it, while the break rolled up to a maximum advantage of around three minutes. Discovery Channel rode the front for much of the race to make sure the overall stayed intact for Hincapie, while the break took the final two intermediate sprints, including a crowd prime collected by Van Ulden for the final sprint. At this point, with two laps to go, the break's advantage had been reduced, thanks to work by Kodak Gallery. With one to go it was less than a minute, signaling Van Ulden it was the point of no return. The Navigators Insurance rider attacked his breakmates and soloed to a 30 second gap, but it was not meant to be as the sprinters and Rollin had much more interest in seeing a field sprint. Coming back on the course towards the downtown, it was all together with little attacks have no success. With three kilometres to go the Kodak train was replaced by six Slipstream-Chipotle riders, confident after yesterday's stage win and looking to put Missouri-native Brad Huff (Slipstream-Chipotle) across the line in the fast downhill sprint finish. But the high speeds and wide roads made for many opportunities, and the Slipstream train was swarmed inside the final two turns at 800 metres. Coming around the final turn it was riders diving to all sides of the four lane road. Dominguez popped to the front on the left side with Huff on his wheel. But with the barriers shifted in at 400 metres to accommodate the roadway, and Huff simply ran out of room, hitting the barriers and flipping over his handlebars in dramatic fashion. But Dominguez was unaffected and easily took the win on the line. The rest of the Slipstream team huddled around their fallen comrade, with Mike Friedman also involved. Luckily the two only had minor bumps and scrapes - with both getting back on their bikes to finish the race. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here
