Tour of Missouri - 2.1USA, September 11-16, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - September 14: Lebanon - Columbia, 214 kmPagliarini puts ProTour sprint to useWind, hills and distance combine for tough stageBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor with Kirsten Robbins in Columbia, Mizzou Following the second stage shenanigans and yesterday's general classification important Time Trial, the racing for stage wins continued on a long drag north to the university town of Columbia. College students lined the finish streets to take a break from... um, studying and were treated to a high-speed, action-packed field sprint. Coming out on top in the final 50 metres was the Brazilian speedster Luciano Pagliarini (Saunier Duval-Prodir), showing that more than footballers come from that country. Charging in close behind was stage one winner Ivan Dominguez (Toyota-United), whose third place gave him enough points to tie Pagliarini for the points jersey. "I predicted that I was going to win today!" a confident Pagliarini said. "I saw the course and I knew it was perfect for me. I believe so much in my condition right now and I knew I could sprint well." But it was not looking the best for him in the final 500 metres. "In the last corner I was very, very far back," said Pagliarini. "It was not easy but I saw a little hole on the right and I knew that was the right moment. It took so long for me to arrive to the finish line, but I was very fresh coming from so far back." The Symmetrics team continues to have a good race with a rider in the top 10 and now two second place finishes with Andrew Pinfold just missing on the line today. "Zach was feeling good today but it was just so hectic that when he went it was a little too early," said Pinfold, regarding the team's Stage 1 sprinter. "Paglarini came from way back and I found his wheel. The first stage Dominguez went from far back so in my head I thought 'Jeez, if I could just get on his wheel I could be on the podium!' So when I saw Paglarini go I got on his wheel, came up along side of him - but he thought that was a little much so he [hooked] me a little bit." Pinfold added that performing well at this race is important for a team like his that is looking to move up next year. "I think we have shown that when you are on the podium you have a chance to win. There are two stages left and I think that it's an opportunity to be on the podium again and show that our team belongs here racing. Our team owners are working really hard to increase our budget and get us to the bigger races." Former race leader Dominguez made the best of the bad luck situation his team is experiencing this week. "It is very sad that we have had bad luck here losing two guys in the beginning stages but we have to keep riding - today the guys rode really well," said Dominguez. "We had a rider in the break and that made it easy for us in the peloton because we didn't have to chase in the wind all day," he added. "Coming to the end I was behind Wherry - in the last kilometre he got me in good position and he asked me where I wanted him to jump. I told him to go when he saw the 600 metres to go sign and he jumped and I was on his wheel. The field spread across the road and my only option was to take the right side. I was coming fast from 20th place and I think I hit one of the spectators and lost my momentum so when I got the guys out front it was too late." Race leader George Hincapie (Discovery Channel) had a routine stage in the saddle today, with his team keeping the break to under five minutes until the final 40 kilometres when the sprinters' teams took over the chase. "It took a long time for the break away to finally go," he said. "Then it was about 90 kilometres so it was a lot of work for those guys, especially because it was tough today in the wind and the rolling terrain. My team kept everything under control and then the sprinters teams took over at the end." Hincapie sounded quietly confident in his hopes of defending his lead over the final two stages when considering both the parcours and his supporting cast. "The distances of the course are long and the rolling terrain typically suits me pretty well - real leg burners," he said. "It is the kind of stuff that I train on. It looked like some of the guys were getting tired today. The team is doing great and everyone is working really well. I mean, I have the Tour de France champion bringing me water bottles so that's not really a normal thing! It is a great honour to lead these guys and I will do anything I can to keep the jersey." How it unfoldedAfter days of sunshine and perfect temperatures, the riders showed up to the start line in Lebanon, Missouri with mostly cloudy skies, 60 degree temperatures and a block headwind coming from the direction of the finish - 214km away. Needless to say it was going to be a long day in the saddle for everyone. From the gun riders were trying to attack off the front to get to the finish a little bit faster, but everyone wanted to come along for the rider and nobody was able to get a significant gap. The only King og the Mountain climb of the stage came early at just 47km and Health Net-Maxxis wanted to keep things together for its man Jeff Louder, who came into the stage leading the category. "Looking at it on the map you could see it was down in a valley... I don't know," said Louder. "It seems like this is a more uphill sprinter climbing trophy! I'm not fooling myself - I wouldn't call this a mountain jersey I am wearing. But it's the terrain here and we are racing it. I've got good legs and good guys helping me out." The unofficial most aggressive rider on the day easily went to Ryder Hesjedal (Health Net-Maxxis), who attacked off the front and stayed solo 30 seconds ahead for several kilometres - then bridged up to the main break of the day. "Ah, it felt longer than that!" he said regarding his solo effort. "Then I wacked across to the break after it was established, you can't ride more aggressive than that." Both he and his KOM leading team-mate were in the break, which formed 79 kilometres into the stage. Louder showed he really is an uphill sprinter when he won the first intermediate sprint in the state's capital Jefferson City, taking home the $1,500 prime that came with it. The rest of the day the break only managed to gain around four minutes on the field, with the rolling hills and wind keeping things relatively together. Discovery Channel assumed its position on the front, towing the leader's jersey on fourth wheel. As the kilometres ticked off the gap held steady. With the finish coming closer the teams with sprinters took over the chase, led by teams such as Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada with its sprinter Dominique Rollin. The Quebecor sits third on the overall and third in the points classification - though the overall is much more important to him and his team. "I'd love to have [the sprint jersey] but the main focus is to get back on the podium for the final GC," he said. "By doing those sprints I can maybe grab second. So I'll be out there tomorrow and Sunday to make it up there!" Speaking of sprinting, the chasing by teams such as Kodak and Slipstream, working for sprinter and Missouri native Brad Huff, closed down the gap within the final five kilometres. That set up a field sprint on the long drag into town, with a narrow 90 degree turn at 400 metres making life interesting. The high speed kept the field in a single file line through the final turn, but then spreading across the road immediately after. Out of the scrum came Pagliarini charging up the side and taking the win. Tomorrow final point-to-point stage departs the capital Jefferson City at 11:00 a.m. CST with Cyclingnews on hand to keep you updated kilometre by kilometre.
