GP Ouest France-Plouay - CDM & ProTFrance, September 1-2, 2007Main Page Results ProTour standings Previous Stage Race 2 - September 2: Men's ProTour GP Ouest-France, 210.1kmVoeckler wins for the courageous crowdBy Jean-François Quénet in Plouay Thomas Voeckler claimed the biggest win of his career so far as he anticipated the bunch sprint of the GP of Plouay and finished ahead of Thor Hushovd and Danilo Di Luca, the latter increasing his lead in the UCI Pro Tour standings. The event's dark horse Alejandro Valverde, whose participation had been overshadowed by renewed links to Operación Puerto, came home anonymously at the back of the main field. As the race looked set for another bunch sprint, there was some speculation that a win by Valverde could mean a repetition of the scenario from two years ago, when George Hincapie wasn't a welcome winner just days after doping revelations about Lance Armstrong appeared in French newspaper in L'Equipe. The Breton public aren't very friendly towards riders suspected of doping. In the context of the post-2007 Tour de France, it was a relief for everyone in Plouay that a Frenchman was still able to pull off a true exploit. In the morning of the race, Voeckler, who just finished the Tour du Poitou-Charentes as an overall winner told L'Equipe: "I have a lot of respect for the spectators who come numerously at the Tour de France. They have to wait for a few hours. They watch us just a few seconds and they get stuck in the traffic jams for ages while we get escorted by the police forces. "Considering all that, we can't say that cycling is a crap sport, that I'd like to quit, etc. No, many people believe in us and we can't forget that cycling isn't just a job, it's our passion. Last Tuesday, I hadn't raced for three weeks and I was so excited to start the Tour of Poitou-Charentes." On the podium in Plouay, he repeated that he was dedicated to his job because of what the crowd deserves. No surprise, he received a lot of applause. Voeckler's last minute attack actually saved the ProTour event from becoming a frustrating race, had it finished in another bunch sprint. "When Voeckler attacked, nobody followed him," runner up Thor Hushovd explained. "I won the sprint quite easily. I felt really strong all day. I'm not happy to come second, but it's a good result and I'm happy that Thomas is the winner." Di Luca was another happy loser. "My goal here was to score as many UCI ProTour points as possible," the Italian said. "I'm satisfied with third place. I thank my team for having done the hard work. During the final sprint, I followed Filippo Pozzato who was kind to slow down and let me come third instead of fourth. Now I'll go to the Tour of Poland with the ambition to score a few more points. I think the ProTour is almost won but I'll wait for the results of the Tour of Spain where Cadel Evans can also threaten my lead." One of the team-mates who did a fantastic job for Di Luca was defending champion Vincenzo Nibali, who forgot about his own ambitions despite being in a great shape. He put himself at the service of his leader as much as he did it at the Tour of Italy. "I was always ready to break clear but I've played the cards of the team and I'm quite happy with the result we got at the end," Nibali said at the finish line. As usual in Plouay, the winner was lavished with gifts and the ceremony was a huge success, as well as a relief for the French cycling community. "I won the Tour du Poitou-Charentes on Friday but I didn't grab a stage win," recalled Voeckler. "The feeling of winning alone is the best one. It's unforgettable. In the finale, I didn't think much, except about winning. "This is one of the biggest races in France, I should say this is one of the biggest races in the world, it's a ProTour race! In my career, I've often attacked with 3km to go, but I didn't often succeed. This is a huge satisfaction to have made it. I wasn't sure of anything when I attacked. I did it for the win, not for the show. I knew I was riding at 55km/h and the bunch was able to ride at 75km/h. That's why I didn't believe in my win before the 200 metres to go mark." The GP Plouay might have been a boring race but it produced a great finale. How it unfoldedBenoît Vaugrenard (Française des Jeux), Nicolas Vogondy (Agritubel), Mickaël Buffaz (Cofidis) and Laurent Lefèvre (Bouygues Telecom) attacked during the first of 11 laps of the GP Plouay. They reached a maximum lead of 8'51 after 60 kilometres of racing. With 50km to go, they got reinforcements from Pierrick Fedrigo (Bouygues Telecom), Jens Voigt (CSC), Pablo Lastras (Caisse d'Epargne), Manuel Quinziato (Liquigas), Anthony Charteau (Crédit Agricole), Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner) and Stijn Vandenbergh (Unibet.com). Juan Antonio Flecha (Rabobank), Andy Capelle (Landbouwkrediet) and Jurgen Van de Walle (Quick Step) went in search of the break but the trio fell victim to the reaction from the peloton. Liquigas asked Quinziato to step down and they started chasing hard as the gap was 1'41 with 33km to go. Smelling a bunch sprint, Quick.Step became the most active team in the peloton with Liquigas and Caisse d'Epargne giving a hand. Italian champion Giovanni Visconti looked to be in superb condition but never got the opportunity to profit from it. With one lap to go, Vandenbergh was dropped. On the côte du Lézot, the first of the three hills in the final lap, the three remaining leaders were Voigt, Fedrigo and Lastras with the German doing most of the work as usual. The Quick.Step rider on the counter-attack was Cédric Vasseur who rode strongly with defending champion Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas) and Wegmann still holding their wheels. Martin Elmiger (Ag2r) and Andriy Grivko (Milram) then joined the chasing trio. The next spectacular move was from UCI ProTour leader Danilo Di Luca (Liquigas) with 12km to go, but he was heavily marked and returned to the shrinking peloton. With 9.5km to go, it was Bradley Wiggins' turn to show up, but his attack also came to nothing. The leading trio of Voigt, Fedrigo and Lastras were finally reeled in with 5km to go. Thomas Voeckler's attack with 2.8km to go was absolutely brilliant. In the bunch behind, there was some hesitation as to who should take up the chase, and that was all the Frenchman needed. He created a small gap for himself, and with 200 metres to go, looked back and realised he was the winner of the GP Plouay. He was welcomed by a totally enchanted crowd.
