56th Jayco Herald Sun Tour - 2.1Australia, October 14-21, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - October 16: Mitchelton Winery - Mansfield, 145.6km
Brotherly love overpowers German motorBy John Trevorrow in Mansfield Before the race got under way there was a minute of silence for Scott Peoples. The young lad from just up the road in Shepparton, finished third into Nagambie in last years tour before he was tragically killed by a motor vehicle in December last year. It was a moving moment as the full field of riders bowed their heads as a mark of respect to a promising young life cut short. This year's Jayco Herald Sun Tour just keeps getting better. Again the race exploded the moment the flag was dropped at Michelton Winery and it never let up until the finish in Mansfield. Tasmanian brothers Wes and Bernie Sulzberger made it a family affair by finishing first and third after escaping from the eight-man breakaway with German Jörg Ludewig. None of the riders in the leading group of eight that escaped after 72 kilometres were any danger for overall honours, so there was no urgency from the main peloton. As the trio approached the final corner, only 200 metres from the line, the German paid dearly for not realising that his breakaway companions were brothers. Wes powered into the corner and Bernie did not react and that moments hesitation cost Ludewig any chance. "It was good to have my brother up there with me," an excited Wes Sulzberger said. "A bit of brotherly help in the end, so it was good. We worked well together once we got away in the last 10 kilometres. When Ludewig attacked and my brother and I were on his wheel...that was it; we stayed away. We worked well together until the end." Wes Sulzberger clarified that "No deals went down. It was just brotherly help I think. We were just puffing and panting at each other." Bernie Sulzberger (DFL-cyclingnews) dominated the climbs to take the blue King of the Mountains jersey from British rider Tom Southam. But it was the frenetic pace right from the gun that had experienced tour followers searching for new superlatives to describe the fantastic racing. Fifteen riders opened a small gap that hovered between ten and forty seconds for nearly fifty kilometres. The Unibet team was in charge for most of the day and race leader Matt Wilson, Baden Cooke and Jeremy Hunt really put the hammer down. Unfortunately, pre-race favourite Trent Lowe and his Jayco National team all missed the move and they spent a lot of energy to pull back the leaders. By the time the two groups finally came back together, there were less than 40 riders at the front of the bike race. The other 50 were never to see the front again and were in for a long, hard day. Approaching Mansfield near the end of the stage, the race for the yellow jersey got very interesting. Cooke and Wilson knew they needed to gain as much time on Lowe before Thursday's climb to Falls Creek, and that's just what they did by applying serious pressure and getting clear of Lowe in the final five kilometres. "We put 'em in the gutter all the way in," an elated Cooke said. "The last 30 kilometres we rode a solid tempo. Then with five kilometres to go we accelerated and it was bloody hard, but immediately the bunch split in half and there were a few GC guys out the back. I managed to hit them in the last corner and got a few more seconds. Lowe was disappointed that Cooke and Wilson managed to gain 30 seconds in the final run in. "There were guys dropping off and Cookie was the last man of the leading group, sitting on the edge of the road so no one had a sit," Lowe said. I just missed the break, I guess I was just too far behind. My fault I guess, but I was going full tilt. Side winds are really not my thing. But it could have been much worse," Lowe added. "When we missed that split at the start today it could have been all over. Stuey (O'Grady) worked like a Trojan for me to close that early split, it was awesome," Lowe said "I knew it was going to be important to be up the front at the start," O'Grady said. "As soon as the flag dropped, the race was on. Unfortunately Trent wasn't in the front group and we had a real battle on our hands from the go. Then it was mano a mano. But that's what I'm here for," O'Grady added. That was my job, to close the gap. I just gave it everything I had and just managed to shut it down and get Trent back up there. Otherwise it would have been all over for him." O'Grady continued that "Once we hit the climb, my job was done. Then I punctured at a very bad moment, but that's life." South Australia.com's Simon Clarke retained his clear lead for the white jersey, for the best under-23 rider. For most of the others leaders it was a day of retreat in terms of time, despite all of them managing to stay with the main chase group until the last few kilometres. The biggest losers were pre-race favourite, Trent Lowe (Jayco Australia), overnight second placegetter, David Pell (Savings and Loans), former Olympic rower Cameron Wurf (Bissel SRAM), Julien Mazet (Astana) and Eric Wohlberg (Bicycle Superstore-Canada) who each conceded 26 seconds and another Astana man, Steve Morabito, who, despite finishing with Wilson, fell behind by 23 seconds, most of which (20 seconds) was due to a penalty for moto pacing during the stage. Wilson, who retained both the yellow and red jerseys for the tour and sprint king leads, predicted that tomorrow's 139.5-kilometre stage from Mansfield to Beechworth would bring more of what was witnessed today. "I hear the wind will be blowing again, so it will probably be more of the same. Originally we had others plans for the stage but we might have to let them go."
