Stage 2 - November 5: Invercargill - Bluff Hill, 81.8 km

New Zealand's Reon Park will wear the yellow jersey on tomorrow's stage three, after storming to a stage two victory this afternoon in difficult conditions. The Team Colour Plus rider took a surprise victory on the 81.8-kilometre stage, where the general classification started to shakeout after the morning's short individual time trial.
This afternoon's stage, the second of the Tour of Southland's opening day, was staged in trying conditions, with riders confronting strong winds and even hail en route to the Bluff Hill finish. The conditions got the better of 2005 race winner Gordon McCauley, with the Trek Zookeepers Café rider being blown from his bike while in the lead group over the closing kilometres, but the New Zealander was able to recover for a credible fourth place finish.
The challenging conditions played into the hands of McCauley's team-mate Hayden Roulston, with the defending champion taking second place 14 seconds behind Park. Roulston's strong showing on the second stage boosts him to second overall, 22 seconds behind Park, increasing his chances of defending his title after the New Zealander finished some 47 seconds down in the morning's TT.
The afternoon's stage was characterised by an early break of 15 riders, including all five of the Colour Plus entrants. While the break drew out some four minutes over the main peloton, it allowed the gap to recede as the riders began to string out on the Bluff Hill climb.
After strong opening stages, both the Colour Plus and Trek Zookeepers Café squads are holding good positions in the overall classification. In addition to race leader Park, Colour Plus has Marc Ryan in third, Logan Hutchings in fifth and Tim Gudsell in sixth place, while Trek Zookeepers Café holds second with Roulston, fourth with McCauley and ninth with Michael Torckler.
American Scott Zwizanski (Bissell Pro Cycling Team) has placed himself in a strong position on classification after finishing eighth on the second stage. Zwizanski, whose team-mate Thomas Zirbel won the opening stage, holds eighth place on general classification, 3'19" behind Park.
