Vos wins, yellow jersey a bonus

The stage may well have been 17 kilometres shorter, but the form Team DSB Bank's Marianne Vos showed on the Tour de l'Aude's first stage in Port La Nouvelle mirrored that which saw her sprint into the Women's World Road Race Champion's jersey in Salzburg, Austria last September. The Netherlands rider's explosive sprint saw her take victory from T-Mobile speedster Ina Teutenberg in a group that contained more than half the field.
If the victory wasn't already sweet enough for Vos, who celebrated her birthday just last weekend, then the 10 second bonus which comes with it, and places her in the general classification lead, certainly brought a smile to the 20 year-old's face. "I tried to take advantage of the train of T-Mobile," said the Hertogenbosch-born youngster to www.wielermagazine.nl. "But [it] actually came too early in the sprint. I decided to go there really fully and fortunately that succeeded."

The 70 strong lead group was the result of a closely contested, 115.5 kilometre stage. Despite continual pushes by various teams to form a break, the peloton simply wasn't allowing anything get away this early in a long tour. While newly registered UCI Women's squad Expresscopy.com pushed aggressively for a break in its first Tour de l'Aude, it was a Nicole Brändli (Team Bigla)-led group of six riders that formed the day's only break, yet even that only survived for five kilometres.
"Without our sprinter we had nothing to lose so Anne and I decided to keep pushing it," said Meshy Holt (Team expresscopy.com), "we aren't giving anything away".
From there is was a all or nothing sprint to the finish line for the world's top women's riders.

"We shared the work with the other teams in the run-in. Then we went flat-out at the front for the final three kilometres," said T-Mobile Sports Director Anna Wilson. "I am very happy with the second place and the team work."
With such a large bunch crossing the line together, beyond the new leader there was little change in the leader board.
Tomorrow the women face a 41.6 kilometre Team Time Trial in the Argeles Sur Mer region, and after Vos took advantage of its train today, T-Mobile will be out to take revenge.
"We want to win - that is always our goal," said Wilson. "As well as that, a team time trial win is always good for team morale."
