23rd Tour de l'Aude - 2.1France, May 18-27, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - May 22: Castelnaudary - Castelnaudary, 107 kmVos comes into play as field dividesBy Greg Johnson It ended in identical fashion to stages one and three, with a sprint, yet the 107 kilometre Stage 4 was the most action-packed day to date of the 23rd Tour de l'Aude. Despite the day of drama, as the lead bunch rolled back in to Castelnaudary, it was 20 year-old world champion Marianne Vos (Team DSB Bank) who was the first rider across the line. The youngster was hard to miss in the green points jersey, as she rolled through metres ahead of second placed Judith Arndt (T-Mobile), who continues to hold the general classification lead. The Netherlands' Vos looked surprisingly refreshed as she rolled home, proudly holding three fingers skywards to signify her third stage win in the event. The action had all started nearly exactly three hours beforehand in the same town, when the peloton rolled out for the 107 kilometre stage. The day's players were quickly unveiled when Équipe Nürnberger's Trixi Worrack made the first significant break of the day - signifying the former podium finisher has her eye on the top step of the dais when the event concludes on Sunday in Limoux. The teamwork which German squad T-Mobile showed to win Sunday's team time trial became even more crucial than when it took the yellow leaders jersey back then today, with a co-ordinated effort required to ensure it kept the yellow jersey in the magenta camp's hands. It was Ina-Yoko Teutenberg who did that work for the squad today, helping drive the lead bunch early on in the race, to recapture Worrack who had gained up to one minute on the bunch. A high-pace at the front end in pursuit of Worrack forced the peloton to snap in half on today's stage, effectively ending any slim hope over half the peloton may have held of a GC victory. Even Teutenberg fell out of the lead bunch after Worrack had been recaptured. But when Worrack's teammate, Andrea Graus, went off the front, Teutenberg not only pulled herself back in to the lead group, she again helped drive it forward to neutralise the threat from the Équipe Nürnberger squad. With Graus resisting the pursuing bunch down to the final kilometres, it was on for young and old - literally. Despite holding a noticeable margin some 200 metres out from the finish, 18 time German champion Arndt couldn't hold off Vos, who threw her fist into the air in celebration as she crossed the line. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow, for I am curious as to what I can do on that stage with two high climbs," said Vos. "[But] after three wins, I must be naturally well satisfied, I feel very strong." New Zealand's Joanne Kiesanowski (Raleigh Lifeforce) crossed the line in third place while Russian Julia Martisova (FRW - Gauss) took fourth. "It was a long day in the laughing group, and it wasn't very funny," said a disappointed Meshy Holt (Team Expresscopy.com), whose entire team finished in the second bunch some 21 minutes behind the leaders. The day's result has a notable impact on the general classification standings, despite Arndt still holding a comfortable 18 second lead. The German rider's teammate Linda Villumsen, who had held second place, is all but out of contention having dropped some 21 minutes on Stage 4. The Denmark rider's tumble down the order elevates Susanne Ljungskog (Team Flexpoint) up into second place, while Kimberly Anderson (T-Mobile) holds third place. While nothing change in the time differences, the fallout from the split field on today's stage sees both Vos and Worrack elevated well up the order. German Worrack holds fifth place, some 43 seconds behind Arndt, while Vos is a further 12 seconds adrift in ninth place.
