23rd Tour de l'Aude - 2.1France, May 18-27, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - May 21: Lezignan Corbières - Lezignan Corbières, 122 kmVos takes twoBy Greg Johnson The women's cycling phenomenon that is Marianne Vos (Team DSB Bank) added another page to her amazing career story today, taking her second stage victory in the 23rd Tour de l'Aude. Despite being the 20 year-old's first attempt at what's dubbed the toughest race on the women's calendar, Vos has shown her incredible talent in full effect over the opening stages of the tour. "I headed to the front of the group then after the last curve the line was only 150 metres," explained Vos. "Then I knew to hold it fully." Despite her success with victories on stages one and three, Vos believes a general classification win is unlikely after loosing nearly three minutes on yesterday's team time trial. "The general classification appears a painful affair after the lost time in the team time trial yesterday," she confessed. "But that wasn't a target [for myself]." The Dutch rider outsprinted Angela Brodtka (Germany) and Marina Jaunatre (France) to take victory in a lead bunch of 33 riders on the 122 kilometre stage. From the start line the course headed straight up on a short, sharp climb and Trixi Worrack (Equipe Nürnberger) attacked immediately. Despite the German rider's solo effort, the T-Mobile squad of general classification leader Judith Arndt pushed the peloton forward to bring Worrack back soon after. Sprinters set the pace early in proceedings, with Tanja Hennes (Bigla) riding a particularly aggressive opening in an effort to protect her sprinter's jersey lead. Despite constant attempts nobody could escape the peloton, which was being watched closely by T-Mobile. While the bunch was expected to fragment at kilometre 71 when the course hit the Col de Villerouge climb, it wasn't until the riders began to descend the other side that the riders broke apart. As the course entered the final 25 kilometres of narrow and winding roads the peloton fell in to three groups. While T-Mobile put its second placed Linda Villumsen along with Anke Wichmann in the first group, its race leader Arndt was in the second group while Ina-Yoko Teutenberg performed the crucial roll of keeping an eye on two time winner Amber Neben (Team Flexpoint) in the third bunch. "Ina kept us informed of the situation at the back of the field. The two front groups regrouped and set a high tempo all the way to the finish", said T-Mobile sporting director Anna Wilson. "Amber is a classy climber and she certainly hasn't lost the race. She is very still very dangerous and will bide her time until the really hard climbs." As the peloton thundered back into Lezignan Corbières the lead group stormed across the line some 1.41 ahead of the smaller second group with the third group, led by prologue winner Christiane Soeder (Raleigh Lifeforce), a further five seconds behind. The fragmented finish of the peloton has had repercussions on the general classification standings. While Arndt remains in the yellow jersey with Villumsen still one second behind, defending champion Neben has dropped back to 27th, nearly two minutes behind. The American's tumble down the standings promotes Susanne Ljungskog (Team Flexpoint) to third on GC. While Worrack, who has finished on the podium here in the past two editions, hasn't made up any time, she has capitalized on other's losses and jumped up four places into seventh. Tomorrow's 107 kilometre stage will see the battle continue with a stage characterized by three climbs. "It is a typical stage here, with plenty of climbs and gusty winds," noted Wilson of Stage 4. "We will have a lot of work to do to control the bunch." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by CJ Farquharson/WomensCycling.net
