65th Paris-Nice - ProTourFrance, March 11-18, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - March 17: Brignoles - Cannes, 200 kmSánchez ascends as Rebellin holds onBy Jean-François Quénet in Cannes Luis Leon Sanchez from Caisse d'Epargne survived a long and brilliant breakaway to win a memorable stage and move up to third place on GC, but he didn't favor his compatriot and former team-mate Alberto Contador who had attacked race leader Davide Rebellin. Rebellin hung on to the lead group in a frantic finale to stay on the throne with one day to go. Reaching the finishing line of Cannes alongside the Mediterranean sea, Sanchez took time for putting his arms up and giving his jersey the best possible look. It was risky for his final position on GC. "But I really wanted to celebrate this win", he said before dedicating it to his brother who died last year. The flamboyant winner of the 2005 Tour Down Under never won a race since the tragedy, although he claimed the overall classification of the Mallorca series this year. "This is a big win for my new team who believed in me after that", he said. His current sponsor Caisse d'Epargne is a French bank, so the motivation was pretty high for producing a spectacular show on the roads to the Côte d'Azur. The 2006 season of the 23 year-old was also affected by the fall out of the Liberty Seguros then Astana team, where he started his career under the guidance of Manolo Saiz three years ago. In the crucial finale of stage 6 in Paris-Nice, he entered a dilemma with his former team-mate Contador, now with Discovery Channel and clearly the best rider in this race. The fading Contador got a helping hand-sling from Sanchez with six kilometers to go, and the pair, along with Sanchez' team-mate David Lopez Garcia agreed to combine forces in order to get the stage win for Sanchez and the yellow jersey for Contador. But Sanchez attacked strongly one kilometer further. "We had agreed, but the real decisions are made in the team cars", a bitter Contador commented. "If I knew it would happen like that, I would have gone solo in the climb because I wasn't going flat out. I wanted to keep a few guys with me for cooperation on the flat finale." Sanchez followed his team's the instructions, otherwise, he was facing the return of the 30-strong bunch including race leader Rebellin. For a while, the position of the Italian looked in danger, especially when he lost his entire Gerolsteiner team and was forced to set the pace by himself. But as the kilometres ticked down, Rebellin started to get help from other teams defending a fourth place on GC (Lampre for Tadej Valjavec), a fifth place (Liquigas for Franco Pellizotti), a sixth place (Française des Jeux for Sébastien Joly), a seventh place (Predictor-Lotto for Cadel Evans), or position on the team classification for the UCI Pro Tour (CSC). This edition of Paris-Nice has been very passionate, but a similar result has occured every day, and this frustrates the people who take the initiative and make a spectacle. "I don't have any regret because we have given it all while we were away", said the new leader of the climber's competition, Thomas Voeckler. "We played but we didn't win today", Discovery Channel's Dirk Demol said. "We wanted to make the race hard, but several teams consistently chased behind breakaways." Rebellin has kept the six seconds lead he got at the only uphill finish in Mende, but he doesn't feel calm yet. "It's not possible to control everyone," he said. "Contador is the strongest, I'm not able to follow him when he attacks in the climbs. I'm tired but I believe everyone is. I know the final stage in Nice, I know it's hard, I hope I'll have good legs for keeping the yellow jersey." Nearing the end of his professional career, but determined to continue on through 2008, Rebellin might benefit from the good reputation he has developed over the years. This is his 16th season, and he's got no enemy in cycling which helps when it comes time to defend a yellow jersey. These days, common interests put aside, the politically correct Gerolsteiner team also looks likeit has less strength but more friends than Discovery Channel. The last stage of Paris-Nice promises a thrilling finale. How it unfoldedJoost Posthuma (Rabobank), who had won the equivalent stage to Cannes two years ago was the most active riders in the initial skirmishes. Patrick Sinkewitz (T-Mobile) was another very motivated rider at the start. Juan Antonio Flecha (Rabobank), Philippe Gilbert (Française des Jeux) and Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis) also made an attempt but the decision was made only at km 33 when six men broke clear: Chavanel again, Thomas Voeckler (Bouygues Telecom), Christian Vandevelde (CSC), Luis Leon Sanchez (Caisse d'Epargne), Levi Leipheimer and Tom Danielson (Discovery Channel). They didn't build too much of a gap to the bunch although they rode hard, covering 47.8 kilometers in the first hour on a very difficult course. With such a demanding stage, a few riders retired, including stage one winner Jean-Patrick Nazon (Ag2r), three more from Bouygues Telecom after Xavier Florencio was a non-starter, and polka-dot-jersey wearer Heinrich Haussler, who was the first of four members of Gerolsteiner to give up. On the côte de Taraudeau (km 73.5), Voeckler started his campaign to take over from Haussler and the advantage of the six men away went up to 2'15. Voeckler was first at the top of seven consecutive classified climbs. En route to Cannes, the gap went up and down. It was two minutes again at the Col de Saint-Arnoux (km 117.5). On the hardest climb of the day, the Col de Bourigaille (km 138.5), race leader Davide Rebellin and the leftovers of his Gerolsteiner team-mates took the reigns of the bunch but didn't bring the escapees back. As the peloton closed in to 1'10 at km 156, Chavanel decided to go by himself, and built up a 52 second advantage. Sanchez was the only one of the breakaway riders not to be swallowed by the bunch. He had enough strength left to follow Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel) and his team-mate David Lopez Garcia, who had gone clear in the final challenge of the day, the Col de Tanneron. Contador went over the top first ahead of Lopez Garcia, Sanchez and Chavanel, all together 20 seconds in front of Rebellin's group. Chavanel was dropped with 6km to go, and the Spanish trio increased their lead to 35 seconds. Sanchez attacked with 5km to go, leaving Contador in the unlucky position of towing Lopez Garcia along. Lopez Garcia then attacked to try and lose Contador, but went too soon and both riders faded and got caught by the peloton. 28 seconds behind Sanchez, Mirko Lorenzetto (Milram) won the bunch and put his arms up the air, the same way Tom Boonen did it three days before when he thought he had won stage 3, not knowing that Luis León Sánchez was still away.
