Nature Valley Grand Prix - NEMinnesota, USA, June 20-24, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Stage 6 - June 24: Stillwater Criterium, 60/50 mins (M/W)Pip makes it five; Stevic claims yellowBy Kirsten Robbins Frank Pip (Health Net) won what was arguably the toughest criterium circuit on the NRC schedule giving Health Net its fifth straight stage win. Pip blasted up the last climb and took the win over Darren Lill (Navigators) while his teammate Rory Sutherland powered into third place. Pip leaped out of a marginal break of three riders, that included Cesar Grajales (Jittery Joes) and Lill, which escaped on the last lap. Grajales, put forth a stellar effort to prevent falling into the dwindled peloton's reach but was caught by Sutherland on the line. "This win was a great way to cap off a great race," Pip said. "Nature Valley Grand Prix has been a great race for us, we couldn't get the overall, we just didn't have the strength to do it. But my team proved to be the strongest out here today because we all rode pretty much together, we all got a little piece of the pie this week - today I was just working for mine." Health Net put on an impressive show during the event, five consecutive stages, but the standing ovation goes to Serbian national champion Ivan Stevic (Toyota-United) after he took the early lead during stage one. Stevic lost the yellow jersey to Kirk O'Bee (Health Net) for half a day after the Stage 3 Individual Time Trial but Toyota-United pulled off an outstanding effort during the Stage 4 criterium to take back the yellow jersey and it never lost sight of it again. The second and third place on general classification reshuffled several times but in the end it was Health Net's duo Sutherland and O'Bee who claimed the podium spots. "[Health Net] did a great job, finally today I saw their good tactics at the finish you saw they got first and third so it was perfect for them," Stevic said, pleased with his team's focus on the overall. "But that wasn't our goal, our goal was to keep the jersey and we did it perfectly thanks to the guys." Stevic had not won a stage race in the US prior to this, but has been the winner of multiple stage wins including a stage at the 2007 Tour de Georgia. "I have to say I'm happy because winning a stage race in the US brings it to a different level," Stevic said proudly. "So now you can even make plans to win the overall NRC next year, it shows maturity as a rider, I feel like I'm getting better with age." Many riders fell off pace during the final 60 minute stage and were forced to drop out due to fatigue. The Stillwater circuit offers no room to recovery, with the Chilkoot Road 22 percent gradient followed by a false flat on the back side of the course and a blazing fast descent that brought the riders back around to the climb. Stevic won the stage in 2006 and was prepared to suffer to hold on to the lead with the aid of his squad. "In the last 10 minutes I had Caleb [Manion] with me the whole time," Stevic said. "I think if we didn't have the jersey to protect today, Caleb would have won solo. He had amazing legs today. I mean he did a perfect job right at the moment I needed it more than ever. So, I'm happy to be keeping the jersey and winning this beautiful race for my beautiful team." Several breaks in the field reshuffled during the criterium until the front of the peloton dwindled to 12 riders by the last few laps. Just when everyone thought they would see a 12 rider drag up the climb, three riders flew around the last corner with a few seconds gap to the nine chasing riders. Grajales had no choice but to lead Pip and Lill around the final circuit and into the climb to the finish line. "I was waiting for the last lap and the right time to attack and figuring out it was going to be the last part of the climb," Grajales said. "I noticed the last part of the hill was really hurting a lot of the riders, because they could make it to the steep section with momentum from the bottom, but after that it would get harder. "I attacked but Pip and Lill had a gap already, so I tried to pass by but they grabbed my wheel," he added. "I didn't get help from the others and I waited too long so the group was too close. It ended in a bad way for me, but I tried my best and I'm happy because I feel strong." Toyota-United's main priority was to win the overall race but Stevic claimed the sprint competition in the process. Jelly Belly's Michael Cody landed the King of the Mountain jersey and VMG's Scott Stewart won the best young rider competition. Armstrong's grand finaleRace leader Kristin Armstrong (Team Lipton) made her move on the fourth time over Chilkoot Hill but this time she was followed by Webcor's best young rider Mara Abbott. The pair rode away from the field and headed into a two up sprint on the last climb to the finish. Laura VanGilder (Cheerwine) powered up the last climb to take third place on the podium. Armstrong flew up the last climb to take the stage win but Abbott was pleased with her second place, both on the stage and general classification, in front of Alex Wrubleski (Colavita/Sutter Home). It wasn't Armstrong's intention to be involved in such a convincing breakaway on the last stage of the 2007 Nature Valley Grand Prix, given that she already had such a commanding lead on general classification. But when opportunity knocked several laps into the race the world time trial champion answered the call. "We went up that hill a few times, it was down to a group of twenty riders and a couple of my teammates tried to attack a couple times and it didn't quite stick," Armstrong said. "So I thought there was a dull moment, so I decided to make my move. I was hoping that the peloton would chase me and have one of my teammates counter but that never happened." Webcor's up an coming talent Mara Abbott recognized Armstrong's tactic from the Stage 5 Mankato road race, where Armstrong rode away from the field and was bound and determined not to let it happen again. "On the fourth lap Kristin attacked," Abbott recalled. "It wasn't a super hard attack but it was more like she started to ride away from everyone again. I was a little further back and I saw her look back and then turn on the gas, which is exactly what happened yesterday. I was like 'this in not going to happen again'. So, I gave it an effort and caught up to her at the top of the second riser." Abbott put out most of the initial effort to create a sizeable gap on the field with the approval of her team. "We wanted to protect Rachael's podium spot so it was ok for me to get away with anyone who did not threaten that second place. Obviously Kristin Armstrong wasn't going to threaten us because she was the only one in the lead already." The pair gained 50 seconds over the peloton pushing Abbott from 11th to second place in the overall. "We worked well together but I had a lot more to gain then she did so I thought that it was awesome that she even worked with me at all because I didn't think she had to," Abbott said. Abbott made the initial move at the base of the climb but was convincingly passed by Armstrong part way up the climb. "I sat on Mara for a while and made her work for her general classification placing and then started rolling through with her because I didn't want to go for the stage win unless I roll through - unless I roll through, I'm not gonna go for it," Armstrong said. Armstrong added that the climb incorporated into the Stillwater criterium felt much better than Stage 5's finishing circuits in Mankato. "It felt pretty good, actually," she noted. "The climb definitely didn't feel as hard as yesterday for me, just because it wasn't as long. I knew that the top was soon to come." With the first two podium places taken, the peloton came into the final climb intact for a drag race to the line. Laura VanGilder (Cheerwine) put her head down and drove herself to the line to take third place in the stage. Alex Wrubleski (Colavita-Sutter Home) was tied with Rachel Heal (Webcor) going into the last criterium, but the tiebreaker for third came from the 'higher stage place' ruling. "I knew I had to place higher up in the stage today so I attacked through the last corner and got a small gap over Rachel, it was enough to hold it to the line," said the Canadian national road champion. Wrubleski also won the Queen of the Mountain competition. Rebecca Larson (Aaron's) rounded out the jersey holders with her win in the sprinters competition. Armstrong commented on this year's race as being a great training week to prepare for the national championship approaching in two weeks. "Like I said before, when I first got to Nature Valley, girls really like to race their bikes here," Armstrong said. "The terrain is for everybody and I had a great team here that supported me. We're headed to nationals in a few weeks, over in Seven Springs, and I hope to have a good ride there. Then we'll be off to Altoona and hopefully our team will come together just like they did today."
