Nature Valley Grand Prix - NEMinnesota, USA, June 20-24, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - June 21: Cannon Falls Road Race, 60 milesO'Bee takes stage, edges into overall leadBy Kirsten Robbins It was a case of gone with the wind and incomes the rain as thunderstorms opened up before the start of the men's 65-mile second stage that started and finished in Cannon Falls. The men's peloton returned to the five finishing circuits and succeeded in their hunt to bring back three escapees on the last lap, setting up a bunch finish. Health Net's Kirk O'Bee blazed across the finish line to take the stage and leader's jersey, courtesy of the 15 bonus seconds awarded to the winner. Canada's newly crowned Pan American Champion Martin Gilbert (Kelly Benefit Strategies) came through in second place with BMC's Dan Schmatz in third. "Everyone who was in the sprint was tired, especially Toyota-United because they worked hard to catch the breakaway," said O'Bee after trying on his yellow jersey. "I just had the legs to follow through with the sprint - I am happy to have the leader's jersey." "We came in today hoping for cross winds and there were none, but attacks going on most of the time," O'Bee continued. "I thought the finish circuit was very technical. We saw the Toyota guys were not able to chase down the break alone and we started working with them on the circuits. In the sprint, I was far back in position but there was a lull during the leadout on a downhill before the finish and I took advantage of the momentum and won." The race started in typical aggressive fashion but this time a break of three riders managed to slip away from the field after 30 miles. The break included Phil Zajicek (Navigators) and two members of the Columbian National Team Jose Serpa and Jaior Perez, with the latter gaining enough points to lead the sprint competition. The trio gained a maximum of 1'30 and worked well together until the finishing circuits when Serpa fell off the pace of the other two. Their gap was reduced to 45 seconds after the first finishing lap and continued to fall on the last four circuits. Third placed BMC rider Dan Schmatz commented on his team's effort to bring back the threatening break and how that aided his podium finish. "The race was good and very aggressive from the start and it never slowed down all day," said Schmatz. "It was an interesting point when the two Columbian riders went up the road with Phil because no team put in a concerted effort to bring it back right away. When we got to the circuits they still had a significant gap so we got up there first. "Mike Sayers headed it and all my team helped along with a couple of Health Net and Toyota-United too. It wasn't a team chase from any one team, when we hit the circuits there were a lot of turns and we had tired legs. I tried to sprint really early but ran out of gas before the line. O'Bee and Gilbert looked very strong when they came by me." Jelly Belly's Michael Cody accumulated enough points to take the lead of the king of the mountains competition. Miller repeats; Cheatley increases leadIn the women's event Team Tibco's sprinter Brooke Miller came flying out of the bunch to take her second consecutive win of the Cannon Falls Road Race over Erica Allar (Ryan Collegiate) and race leader Catherine Cheatley (Cheerwine). The stage resembled very little of the previous years, despite being held on the same 65-mile circuit, as there was only a small amount of dirt road to contend with and very little wind to fight, making for a less tactical event. Stage winner Brooke Miller (Tibco) commented on the race and how she came to win it for the second year in a row. "Last year we had the wind and dirt section so we were expecting it to be similar and just as gruelling this time," said Miller. "But when the wind didn't pick up and with no dirt there was nothing really selective about the course anymore." "I'm really excited because this is a really special race for me and a breakthrough moment last year," continued Miller. "It was a race I wanted to be able to win, it is hard to win a race when there is a lot of expectation and excitement. It makes it all the more special to be able to deliver today." There were several attacks during the race but no dangerous breaks were able to succeed in obtaining a gap. "There was a lot of cat and mouse play," noted Miller. "I was going for the intermediate but my legs were not feeling good and I didn't feel too snappy. We started to be more aggressive before the circuits and then my teammate Stacey Marple moved me up into the dirt section to a good position." After three intermediate sprints, Rebecca Larson (Aaron's) accumulated enough points to take the lead of the sprint competition, tied with race leader Catherine Cheatley (Cheerwine) while climber Alex Wrubleski (Colavita/Sutter Home) earned her lead in the queen of the mountains competition. During the finishing circuits TEAm Lipton moved to the front in an attempt to set up world time trial champion Kristin Armstrong but Cheerwine took over the lead on the final lap with Laura Van Gilder out front working hard to bring her team-mate and race leader Catherine Cheatley home safely. Second placed Erica Allar, fresh from a win in the U23 Liberty Classic, had a rough start in the Stage 1 criterium but was relieved to find her legs and stand on the podium today. "On the last lap I set myself up on the Cheerwine train because I knew they would want to keep Cheatley in the leader's jersey," explained Allar. "I was waiting for it to be strung out and they would be the team to go with. They kept it really strung out and Laura Van Gilder pulled her around the corner and down the hill but I came around Cheatley on the left and Brooke came through on the right." "Brooke came out of no where and it was an awesome move, the best move of the evening," added Allar. "Cheatley worked really hard and it was a long sprint. I had good motivation today because I know my potential and ability and not doing well in the crit last night made me hungry for a good result."
