Nature Valley Grand Prix - NEMinnesota, USA, June 20-24, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - June 23: Mankato Road Race, 86 milesSutherland wins in MankatoBy Kirsten Robbins Mankato is known for it's heinous finishing circuits that tend to crack the weak and tired after the eight-mile trek leading into them. But neither the attacks, the breaks nor the grueling four times up Man Hill Road could take the leader's jersey away from Toyota-United's Ivan Stevic. Health Net made the race as challenging as it knew how to by sending two riders into the winning break of five. The green team's strong man Rory Sutherland took the stage win over Anthony Colby (Colavita/Sutter Home) and Cesar Grajales (Jittery Joe). Sutherland's win moved him into third place on the general classification and marked Health Net's fourth consecutive stage win at the Nature Valley Grand Prix. "We had a really good tactical race today," Sutherland said. "The last few days we might have missed a bit, but Kirk O'Bee saved our lives the last few days and wins like that, guys who have worked their butts off all year it makes it really important to make sure we do the right thing on days like today. It just seemed like we had it from the first kilometre." Sutherland bridged to the winning break on the penultimate lap that included O'Neill, Colby, Grajales, Phil Zajicek (Navigators) and Darrin Lill (Navigators). "It was really hard for me because I bridged across the second to last lap by myself and that really took it out of me," Sutherland said. "Nathan waited for me at the top and then drilled it all the way down the hill. The other guys weren't too interested in working so Nathan worked the whole way down and I can't exactly let the other guys win at the finish." The race started with several attacks and a multiple splits in the field but nothing had the manpower to stay away long. Toyota-United's feathers ruffled 35 miles into the stage when a break of 15 riders took off without them. Race leader Ivan Stevic noted that the whether or not his team was represented in it the outcome would have been the same - chase to bring it back. "The guys did a great job," Stevic said. "We had to bring back that big break because that was pretty bad for us. Even if we had Caleb Manion in the front it was still too many guys. It was putting us in a bad position and everybody was losing the GC and we're here for that. So we worked hard to bring it back and it was hard." Three men countered the break that included local rider Pat Lemieux (Bianchi), Benjamin Bradshaw (VMG) and Ian Stanford (Abercrombie and Fitch). Tim Johnson (Health Net) bridged to the trio soon after and the four riders stayed off of the front in hopes of making it to the end. Toyota-United took responsibility for the second break and brought it back while entering the finishing circuits. "It was just a nice set up for Health Net because Toyota always had to work," Johnson said of his break. "Stevic's got great form and it's taking our entire team throwing everything we have at him to crack it, and so far he's holding up." The field was intact after the first circuit, giving Health Net a perfect opportunity to launch O'Neill over the climb while Grajales also latched on to form a two-man break. The third time over the climb Colby, Lill, and Zajicek jumped across and the five were soon joined by Sutherland. Second placed Colby took his chances in the break hoping that Toyota-United might be too over worked to bring the small break back. "I saw a gap open up and I thought Health Net's not going to chase and Toyota might be too tired," Colby said. "The gap was minimal. But Toyota rode a hell of a race yesterday and that possibly tired them out a little bit." Coming into the finish Colby launched him self out of the small bunch but was passed by Sutherland on the final straight to the line. "He's a great endurance rider," commented Colby. "He's a tough rider and then he's got that surge at the end." Double jersey holder Ivan Stevic maintained his lead in both the GC and the sprint competition. The Serbian national champion was highly appreciative of this team's efforts in controlling the time gap between the break and the field. Stevic won the bunch sprint for eight place and only eight seconds down from the lead group. "All the guys were working so hard and I was with Chris Baldwin and Caleb Manion, but in the last two laps, I was by myself," Stevic said. "It was hard to control today because of all the work they did, they didn't have it at the end. I wasn't brilliant at the end either - I have to be honest. I think it's normal, because I had to work a lot, I had to hold the wheels and follow all the attacks in the last two laps and I'm glad I managed to make the gap really small - eight seconds was not enough to take the jersey from me." Armstrong powers away from the fieldThe women's field came barreling onto the finishing circuits for its four lap finish, but nobody could stop Kristin Armstrong (TEAm Lipton) from claiming victory after she rode away from the field on the first lap and soloed in to repeat her stage win from last year. "I had it in my head how I wanted to do it and it worked out exactly how I played it - there's a lot to be said for visualization," said Armstrong, who has extended her general classification lead significantly. Webcor Builder's Rachael Heel surprised her small chase group to take second over Felica Gomez (Aaron's) in third. Armstrong further increased her GC lead, which now stands at 1.42 minutes over Heal and Queen of the Mountains leader Alex Wrubleski (Colavita/Sutter Home) in third. Though the field entered the circuits intact it quickly shattered on the first climb over Man Hill Road. Armstrong realized she had a gap after the passing the QOM and just kept on going. The next group of strong climbers emerged, including Heal, Gomez, Kristin Sanders (Aaron's), Mara Abbott (Webcor Builders) and Wrubleski, but simply couldn't keep the pace Armstrong had set, falling 39 seconds behind the time trial world champion. The women's field was active during portions of its 86 mile event, with a break of two powering off the front after the first intermediate sprint. The duo included Courtenay Brown (Value Act Capital) and Julie Bishop (Naturals), who spent 30 miles off the front together. Almost as soon as the two escapees returned, Rushlee Buchanan (Jazz Apple) bravely launched herself out of the field and soloed for 20 miles until the field caught her entering the finishing circuits. "We timed it perfectly," Armstrong said. "We caught the last rider right as we were entering the circuit and instead of taking a defensive approach with some of the teams that wanted to move ahead on GC, I wanted the girls to come in here and drive it to try to keep me clear. "Once I moved in and got up the hill, it's pretty much, you're just on your own," she added. "There's nothing else you can do. It's just suffering and how deep you can dig. But I couldn't have done it without my team today. They did an awesome job of supporting me out there and I think we did it well." The five riders chasing Armstrong dwindled to four when Webcor's Heal fell off the back during the last climb. Heal put herself head down, working hard to recapture the group before the line and surprised everyone by taking second place and also moving into second on GC. "We started today fairly low down on GC and it wasn't our responsibility to chase the breaks," Heal explained. "We knew that the roads were wide and nothing would really get away so we were conserving until the circuits and then tried to string things out before the climb to make it hard." As the field hit the climb, Abbott attacked to pull out the climbers in the bunch. Armstrong then counter attacked and rode off the front while the chase group of five quickly became organized behind her. "Only Mara and I did the chasing because the others didn't seem interested in chasing Kristin," Heal said. "On the last lap I lost contact with them but as I was coming down the descent I got back to the group, though they didn't know I was there. I surprised them and jump before the final corner and I held it to the line." "I think it is rewarding for the team because we have been patient all week," Heal added. "We knew the time trial and Mankato would suit us better and we had faith we would start to leap frog in the end stages -though we didn't think we would leap as far as we did!" Aaron's speedster Rebecca Larson continues to lead the sprint competition heading into tomorrow's final stage.
