22nd Tour de Beauce - 2.2Canada, June 12-17, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - June 16: Québec, 125 kmMacGregor rides 'cool' in hot Beauce stageBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Québec City, Québec Navigators control all breaks until endSlipstream-Chipotle has been racing all week at a disadvantage - starting with one less rider than the other big teams and losing two riders to illness on the first stage. However, that has not prevented it from placing a rider in the top three overall this week with a strong ride by Danny Pate. And today in Québec City, Ian MacGregor added a stage win to the team's accomplishments, attacking his breakaway at the bottom of the monster finishing climb and holding off the catch to the line. "We only have four guys in the race so it is good to be competitive," MacGregor said. "I was wrecked after Philly week and it took me the first four stages to get my legs back." The key to the win, according to MacGregor, was battling the hot temperatures as much as possible. "I was in the break and pulled equally, but made sure I wasn't driving it too hard and staying cool," he explained. "Dr. Alan Lim taught us how important it is to keep cool and regulate your core body temperature. Even if you are weak, if you take care of that, you will be better than the other guys. I dumped as many bottles as I could over the top of me all day." The main break consisted of MacGregor, Jesse Anthony (Kodak Gallery), Jacob Nielsen (Farso Denmark), Andreas Schillinger (Sparkasse), John Fredy Parra Calada (Tecos Trek) and Cameron Evans (Symmetrics), who was also in a break in last night's criterium. "I'm starting to get tired now!" Evans joked. However, with nine laps of a 14km urban and technical course that featured nearly a two kilometre climb rising 100 metres every lap, one could understand his pain. "For the most part we were all rolling through together because we knew that Navigators would ride tempo in the field," said Anthony. "As long as everyone worked it would stay. A couple of times guys sat on, including myself, because at certain points you just don't have it." The final lap saw an attack out of the break by Nielsen who was trying a last-ditch effort. "I knew I couldn't follow them up the climb, and if there was a chance it was there - I had to go early," he said. "I tried it down the descent but they worked together and they caught me with 4.5km to go." Nielsen was counting on the usual disorganization that occurs late in a race, with riders not wanting to do the chasing. But the break kept it's wits about it and rode a steady tempo to keep him within reach. "Everyone was rolling through," said Evans who was wearing the best young rider's jersey. "We weren't worried about him because he wasn't putting a time on us." The hesitation Nielsen was looking for came after he was caught. "MacGregor got away just before the final climb," Evans explained. "Everyone kind of looked at each other and that was it." "Going into it I noticed the guys were real hesitant," MacGregor said. "I'm not really fast on the flats but I hit out with about four kilometres to go. I tried to regulate my power and keep it steady. At the bottom I was well over 600 but at the top I was barely over 380-390. I was just holding on!" "The last time up the hill we dropped a few guys," said Anthony. "When Ian went that hill is hard to hit solo after a four minute effort, so hats off to him - he rode phenomenal and a big effort. It was close and we were for sure closing on him." Back in the peloton, Ben Day was safely escorted to the final climb by his team, and delivered up the first part of it before taking over himself. "The way the guys set it up for me at the finish, they rode their asses off and hit the last climb with me on the front of the peloton with 1.5km to go," said Day. "I just f***ing drilled it from there and saw Svein and Danny just behind me." "I think we kind of shocked them today," he said regarding the other GC riders. "They have said the last couple of days how they were going to come out and smash us but once again we saw how strong we were today and hopefully that will scare them off tomorrow. All respect for them though, they are fighters and will come out. We have a job to do and will bring it home tomorrow." Tomorrow's final stage is about as rough-and-tumble as today, with 12 laps of a 10.5km hilly course. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Jerome Lessard
