Missaglia poised to take overall GC honours

On a day when all the GC contenders finished together, it is almost a certainty, assuming no mishaps, that Gabriel Missaglia (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia) will hold off his rivals to take out the sixth edition of the Tour of Qinghai Lake in tomorrow's finale, a road circuit race.
Today's stage eight started under sunny skies in Menyuan,with views of the Daban mountain range in the distance giving the riders a preview of the day's route.
The 168km stage was a gradual downhill for the first 100km and at 30km, a six-man break formed. At the base of the 3448m high climb, they had three minutes on the yellow jersey wearer's group. As the leaders started the climb, Jose Luis Rubiera (Discovery Channel) and Joerg Ludewig (Team Wiesenhof Felt) made a break, which would inevitably be the winning move. Peter Herzig (FRF Couriers-NSWIS) and Volodymyr Zagorodniy (OTC Doors-Lauretana) also went ahead of the group in hope of starting the descent before the others.

Back in the yellow jersey group, Daniel Lloyd (DFL-Cyclingnews.com) had a brief attack but was quickly bought back by the Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia team. All the contenders for GC stayed together, with the eight days of racing in the hills behind them apparently having sapped energy needed for a decisive attack.
At the peak of the climb, rain had began to fall and by the base of the mountain with 20km to go, Jose Luis Rubiera (Discovery Channel) had ridden away from his climbing mate Joerg Ludewig (Team Wiesenhof Felt). But the going was tough with heavy rain and a head wind played havoc with the riders. Joerg Ludewig (Team Wiesenhof Felt) caught Jose Luis Rubiera (Discovery Channel) just near the end, and after a lacklustre sprint to the finish line Jose Luis Rubiera (Discovery Channel) crossed first.
One of the big surprises of the day was Ma Haijun (China) taking over the lead of the Asian Classification jersey from Discovery Channels Fuyu Li. Being a local boy Ma Haijun (China) was a huge hit with the large crowd who showed for the finish.
