9th Tour Down Under - 2.HCAustralia, January 16-21, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Stage 5 - Sunday, January 21: Adelaide City Council Circuit, 90kmBattle for seconds goes to Elmiger, stage to McEwenElmiger just holds off Menzies' charge for jersey By Mark Zalewski in Adelaide, South Australia After two days of rain soaked racing, the first ever in the history of the Tour Down Under, the final stage around the streets of Adelaide went off with only threats of rain. The only threats today came from Karl Menzies and his composite Australia-UniSA team, vying to regain the one second Ag2R-Prevoyance's Martin Elmiger took in the penultimate stage. As predicted, Australia-UniSA controlled the race until the first intermediate sprint, but on the line it was Elmiger proving to be too strong for Menzies as he won the sprint outright, virtually securing his win. "It was a hard classification sprint - it was like a final sprint in a stage," said Elmiger after the race. "I was behind Menzies and I had very good legs today. In the sprint I was stronger and I took the three seconds. The second sprint was easier with a group off the front so it was easy behind. For the final sprint I stayed behind Menzies and it was ok." Menzies knew that the first sprint was the best chance he had at regaining the lead, and his team did everything they could in the effort. "All the boys rode awesome, especially Allan Davis," said Menzies. "We gave it a shot but I was just beaten by a better rider. He is a great guy as well. I had a perfect leadout - he was on my wheel, and we both knew it was the tour right there - he beat me and I knew I lost then. I was not going to beat anyone in the finish; I'm not as fast as a Robbie McEwen." As it turned out, nobody was as fast as McEwen today, as the Predictor-Lotto rider took out the final sprint of the day against a hard charging Mark Renshaw (Credit Agricole), winner of the opening Down Under Classic. The crosswinds today blew across the finish straight from right to left, causing McEwen and the bunch to drift across the slightly uphill finish. "It's such an aggressive stage, it was so so fast," said McEwen. "In the finish, the sprinters made it kind of difficult. I came off Allan Davis in the middle of the road but because of the crosswind I wanted to be against the left barriers so I tried to just come slowly back across and just cover my lines." Renshaw was boxed in against the barriers on McEwen's wheel, raising his hand in protest across the line believing that McEwen went unnecessarily far. "I had Robbie's wheel in the last kilometre - I knew he would be the man to beat," Renshaw told Cyclingnews. "With the wind coming from the right it made Robbie sprint like that, to the left, but not to that extent. It's a little bit disappointing to end up like that." However, the commissaries disagreed and gave the win to McEwen, who had been fighting the remnants of illness all week. "I love coming here it's a great stage and a fantastic crowd, it's nice to start your year off on a winning note. I've been thinking all week about this very stage." Speaking of McEwen, he seemed to be showing a little national pride earlier in the race, jumping in on the train to lead out Menzies for the first bonus sprint. "I think he helped out in the last lap when we were running low on guys. He jumped on in front of Davis and had a hit out. That was great and we appreciate it - helping a fellow Australian try to get the win." While second place by a few seconds is not the ideal result for Menzies, he is still confident going into the start of the U.S. racing season with his Health Net team. "In four weeks time we have Tour of California - probably the biggest race of the year in the U.S. That is why my early season form has to be pretty good. I wasn't focusing going this well so early, so it's a good sign. My first goal was to win a stage of the Tour of California, and I would still like to do that." For Elmiger, this is the first stage race win of his career, as the former Swiss champion was previously a domestique on the Phonak team. With the dissolution of the team, Ag2R-Prevoyance signed him to be their man for the classics. ""This means a lot - it's my first stage race win and first race with my new team. We worked well together and I am really happy. It's amazing - four wins for the team here." Looking ahead on his calendar, Elmiger turns is attention squarely to one-day efforts. "I love the long one-day races like Milan-San Remo and Tour of Flanders," said Elmiger. "I was five years with Phonak and I was brought onto this team for the classics. Milan-San Remo and Tour of Flanders are my biggest goals this year, and then the world championships, but that is a long way off." While he fancies himself primarily as a one-day specialist, he said that he would like to come back and try his hand at defending his stage race victory. "The whole week was hard - the first race and the first time I was [a leader.] I'm feeling good and I am really happy. I liked this race, Adelaide and South Australia, so I would like to come back and defend." His new team even joked with him after the first stage, pleading with him not to take the jersey too early. "Last year Simon Gerrans won the first stage and the team had to work. They told me as a joke, 'Don't win the first stage!' I still tried but Menzies was stronger. It was ok though because I was feeling good and thought I could win the race." How it unfolded Even though the skies looked the same as in the previous two stages, the rain held off long enough for the racers and the thousands of fans armed with umbrellas. Still, the weather produced strong winds that whipped across the 4.5km circuit, only increasing the nervousness for the riders. "I was very nervous today," said race leader Martin Elmiger (Ag2R-Prevoyance), who held a tenuous one second lead on former leader Karl Menzies (Australia-UniSA). "In the first sprint I was nervous with the wind, but with an uphill sprint, it is for me." From the opening laps, it was clear that Australia-UniSA was dead set on taking back the leader's jersey via the first bonus sprint, meaning that Menzies would have to win the sprint with Elmiger not getting better than third. "It's a solid circuit," said teammate Matt White about the difficulty of the course. "It's pretty hard for anyone to get away on there - super fast in some sections and super windy in others. Our only chance was to win the first time bonus. We knew we could only keep it together for the first sprint because after a week on the front it would be too hard to keep it going to the second one." As the laps ticked off towards the first sprint on the eighth lap Australia-UniSA rode strong on the front, with Menzies protected on the rear, followed closely by Elmiger. As has been the case most of the week, Chocolade Jacques attacked the race, this time with Glenn d'Hollander, with Kiwi Gordon McCauley joining. But Menzies' boys put the pedal to the floor and brought the duo back in due time. Next, d'Hollander's teammate Frederik Veuchelen gave it a go, but with the same result. Driving a lot of the pace to catch the early attempts was Matt White, who normally does the same for Discovery Channel. But down to the bell lap for the first sprint it was Allan Davis and Robert McLachlan looking after Menzies in the end, with the other teammates swinging off in sequence. "Coming into the sprint it was pretty hairy - I just wanted to do my job early and get out!" said Chris Jongewaard, who rode strong the day before to get Menzies over the KOM. Down the stretch Allan Davis led out Menzies, with additional help from McEwen. But glued to Menzies' wheel was Elmiger, even swinging around a slowing McEwen 250 meters from the line and making it back to come around the two Australia-UniSA. Per the plan, Davis tried to pull his bike back as Menzies thrust it forward, but Davis still took second place behind Elmiger, with Menzies in third. "He is a great teammate," said Menzies. "We knew I had to win the sprint and for him to get second ahead of Elmiger - it was the plan and would have been perfect for us." As the trio rounded the 180 degree turn past the start/finish, it looked more like the post-race run out with all three spent after giving it their all. Rolling along, Menzies' extended his hand to Elmiger, conceding the overall victory and showing true sportsmanship. But the racing was not over, with battles for the KOM and sprint jersey still within reach for a few riders. Laurent Brochard (Bouygues Telecom) was wearing the sprint leader's jersey, but knew that he would not be able to contest the first sprint due to the GC battle. "It was obviously an objective of mine after yesterday's stage when I took the jersey. One thing that made it a little more complicated was the fact that the overall classification hadn't been decided and so it was not only the GC riders I had to go up against. Also the stage finish had bonus points as well." On the second bonus sprint, the former world champion made a strong move from almost the beginning of the final straight, taking it with a comfortable gap and earning a conformable lead. "[The sprint jersey] been a very good standard this year amongst the riders," he said. "It was a little strange after the first day because the overall classification was virtually decided but [the sprint] was really competitive right to the last day and the standard of competition has been great." The KOM battle was a little anti-climactic with the deciding climb quite small, compared to yesterday's run up Willunga Hill. Still the riders were set on battling with many points on the line with two KOM sprints. Samuel Dumoulin (AG2r-Prévoyance) led the competition going into the stage, twelve points ahead of three riders: Serge Pauwels (Chocolade Jacques), Gianpaolo Cheula (Barloworld) and Heath Blackgrove (New Zealand National Team ). The first KOM sprint was taken out of the hands of the contenders by the breakaway, meaning the second KOM would be the decider with the breakaway reeled back in. However, with the stage being shortened due to the live television coverage, there was some confusion between the riders and the officials as to when the KOM sprint would occur. The lap that the KOM occurred on did not see much of a sprint, with Pauwels taking the sixteen points and the jersey easily. The next time up Dumoulin gave it a go but without realizing it was too late. With all of the jersey's decided the only thing left was the stage win, and an outside chance for Menzies to take the double time bonuses on the line. But with Elmiger glued to his wheel like a shadow for the final laps, that looked to be impossible. The Navigators Insurance team did a lot of the pace making in the final laps, set on getting a win for their Aussie sprinter Hilton Clarke. Into the final laps, Barloworld made a strong surge to get Robbie Hunter to the line, with one rider leading Hunter around the final turn with 800 meters to the line. Coming up the final straight the crosswinds kicked up as the fans banged against the barriers. Coming around the right side of Barloworld was Allan Davis, followed closely by Robbie McEwen and Mark Renshaw. The strong winds pushed the riders across the road, with McEwen shifting the most and hugging close to the barriers. Renshaw gave a dig at trying to come through in between McEwen and the barriers, but ran out of real estate. The young Aussie sprinter put his head on McEwen to keep from going into the barriers, then raised it as he crossed the line behind McEwen in protest. The commissaries said they were looking at the video automatically, giving Renshaw early confidence. "I asked the commissaire but they're already looking at it without me appealing. When they're already saying that I think they've already made their mind up. Two victories in one week would have been perfect." But the officials came back with the conclusion that the sprint by the former Tour de France sprint champion was legal.
