9th Tour Down Under - 2.HCAustralia, January 16-21, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - Saturday, January 20: Willunga - Willunga, 147kmElmiger sprints into overall lead via bonusBelgians win the day, Menzies puts up valiant fight By Mark Zalewski in Willunga, South Austalia Dark clouds greeted the riders for the second day in today's penultimate stage of the Tour Down Under, with many expecting today to be a storm of activity in the fight for the overall lead. With second place Martin Elmiger (AG2r Prevoyance) sitting one second behind race leader Karl Menzies (Australia - UniSA) it was sure to be an all out battle to the line. At the start Elmiger was all quiet on the race strategy, saying only that he would be watching Menzies. As it turns out, Elmiger was targeting the KOM to make his move, but had to settle for the time bonuses on the finish line, leapfrogging Menzies in the outright standings via the two seconds he earned with a third place sprint finish, behind winner Pieter Ghyllebert (Chocolade Jacques - Topsport Vlaanderen). "It was my goal today to make up some seconds in the mountains but it came down to the final, so I had to sprint," said Elmiger. "We played a good card with Simon Gerrans and Yuriy Krivtsov in the front with me. They were going hard because the [leader's] jersey was behind by thirty seconds after the hill. I was thinking that's it for us, but then they chased hard behind and I had to sprint for third and for the jersey." Elmiger is excited to be in the leader's jersey, poised to win it all with one stage to go. "Last year I didn't win a race so it's long enough!" said Elmiger. "It's big for me. I've never won a stage race." Stage winner Ghyllebert was also happy with the win, after helping his teammate take out a stage the other day in Hahndorf. "It was a very hard last lap and on the climb - I gave everything to hold the second group, then the CSC riders closed the gap to the front group, but you need a little bit of luck. The other day I was second to my team-mate and I was also very strong but today it's my turn." Menzies was understandably upset upon hearing the result after riding out of his skin to stay within reach of Elmiger and the other GC threats on Willunga Hill, only to lose the jersey by a time bonus. "I followed the man I had to but he slipped away in the final metres," he said. "But credit to him, he rode strong all day and up the climb." "The team rode beautifully all day," he continued. "Having Robert up there for us was perfect. And Jongewaard rode with me all the way up the climb. Then Robert was there waiting at the top and they did all they could - I only had to do like one turn. CSC didn't have anyone up there either so Roberts, Goss and O'Grady came through too." "There were a few guys doing some stupid things," said Menzies about the final sprint. "Maybe I was a bit too concerned about following him and not sprinting for myself." This sets up a battle royale on the streets of downtown Adelaide on Sunday, with a flat and fast 4.5 kilometre course featuring three opportunities for time bonuses, two intermediate sprints and the finish line. "For sure we'll give it a go tomorrow," said Menzies. "One second down and I can sprint ok, so we'll go hammer and tongs. The legs feel good still and I miss those podium girls pecking me on the cheek!" Elmiger is confident that he and his team can put up a quality defence tomorrow, despite being down a few riders. "We have a good quality of riders, maybe not the quantity but a good quality," he said. Regarding the race so far he joked: "It's like the Tour de France, no? Where they don't attack!" But on a more serious note he added: "We have to ride clever, I can sprint well so I will fight for the overall classification. I'm confident that I can sprint as well, like Menzies. It will be a tough final but it's good for the last stage - normally the leaders jersey is decided by now." How it unfolded "Come to the Tour Down Under - it never rains!" was a phrase used to convince this seppo Cyclingnews correspondent to travel around the world. Well to that I say, "Codswallop!" (Look it up if you are not from Down Unda'!) Two back-to-back days of rain made the local farmers sing and the soaked riders curse. As has been the case in every stage of this Tour Down Under, early attacks produced a large breakaway that ate up all of the time bonuses out on the road, much to the liking of the Australia-UniSA team, who otherwise would have to keep an eye on seventeen riders with a shot at the overall. Menzies even had the numbers written on tape placed on his top tube. "I sure used a big font, but I didn't even use it today," he said. The main break on the day today was setting up to be a battle for the red sprinters jersey, between Laurent Brouchard (Bouygues Telecom) and the new leader Viktor Rapinski (Navigators Insurance), who claimed the lead by being in the long break yesterday. But early bad luck struck Rapinski with a rear puncture, sending him out of the break. The strong man from Belarus toughed it out for a few kilometres chasing solo, but eventually made the wiser decision to sit-up and live to fight another day. The rest of the break contained: Samuel Dumoulin (AG2r Prevoyance), Allan Johansen (Team CSC), Julian Dean (Credit Agricole), Matt Wilson (Unibet.com), Glenn D'hollander (Chocolade Jacques - Topsport Vlaanderen), Darren Lill (Navigators Insurance Cycling Team), Fabrizio Guidi (Barloworld), Diego Caccia (Barloworld), Ludovic Turpin (AG2r Prevoyance), Hans Dekkers (Agritubel), Robert McLachlan (Australia - UniSA), Heath Blackgrove (New Zealand National Team), Clinton Avery (New Zealand National Team). The first sprint of the day pushed Brouchard into the lead by two points as he took four for second place. Back in the peloton, a variety of teams took turns working, with the majority of the early gas contributed by CSC, with Lars Bak sitting just seven seconds in the rears of Menzies and director sportif Scott Sunderland tired of seeing the same race play out day after day. "It is a funny race," he told Cyclingnews before the stage. "The trend the last few days has been for a break to go up the road to take all of the bonuses. It makes for a negative race - a boring race just doing the in between stuff." The break seemed to hover under three minutes for most of the day, at least until the second intermediate sprint was eaten up by the non-GC threatening breakaway. Brouchard took the second sprint, increasing his lead on Rapinski and the others. Still the peloton only was able to eat away a slice of the advantage, sitting at just over two minutes until the breakaway entered downtown Willunga for the final time before the KOM. On the line before the climb it was an advantage of 1.45, with the pace starting to finally quicken. As the break went up the climb, the long day took its toll on half the riders. Eventually, only six remained to the top: Brochard, d'Hollander, Blackgrove, Guidi, Dean and Caccia. Behind, dropped riders struggled up while Menzies' teammate in the break Robert McLachlan waited to help his team leader stay in contact with the race. The gap to the peloton, still containing Menzies, dropped rapidly as the climb steepened. By the top, the six remaining break riders only had around thirty seconds on what became a split in the peloton, containing: Yuriy Krivtsov (AG2r Prevoyance), Matthew Lloyd (Predictor - Lotto), Matt Wilson (Unibet.com), Gustav Larsson (Unibet.com), Matteo Carrara (Unibet.com), Clinton Avery (New Zealand National Team), Gene Bates (SouthAustralia.com-AIS), Martin Elmiger (AG2r Prevoyance), Wesley Sulzberger (SouthAustralia.com-AIS), Sergey Lagutin (Navigators Insurance Cycling Team), Juan Miguel Mercado (Agritubel), Alexandre Botcharov (Credit Agricole), Eduardo Gonzalo (Agritubel), Simon Gerrans (AG2r Prevoyance), Nicolas Crosbie (Bouygues Telecom), Serge Pauwels (Chocolade Jacques - Topsport Vlaanderen). Another thirty-odd seconds behind was the Menzies group, keeping the threats up the road within reach for the final 18 kilometres of the descent and finish. But Menzies would have to catch the group by the line in order to finish with the same time as second place Elmiger. As expected, the big engine of Menzies chipped away at the lead, aided by a strong CSC contingent, catching the leaders which resulted in a pack of around twenty-four riders. This set-up a field sprint for the valuable time bonuses on the line - six, four and two seconds respectively. The final three kilometres was a gradual drag uphill to the finish line, with thousands waiting and hoping the rains would hold off. The final kilometre produced a fast sprint with the Euro-pros loving the weather and riding accordingly. "My teammate Jens Renders, he goes [on the front] two kilometres from the finish on the left side and it was a very strong wind from the right side," said Pieter Ghyllebert. "He took me to 300 metres and then I went on the left side - nobody was on my wheel." The closest riders were Sergey Lagutin (Navigators Insurance) and Martin Elmiger, who snatched the other two time bonuses on the line. "Stuart [O'Grady] went to the left and then I have to brake - then I was coming back for the third place. Stuart did not sprint for the third place once he could not win so I came past him and it was a little bit easier. It was really left-right-left-right, side wind, and I was only doing the best sprint for me, I wasn't looking for Menzies."
