9th Tour Down Under - 2.HCAustralia, January 16-21, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - Thursday, January 18: Mannum - Hahndorf, 150kmEuros answer Aussies with Belgian one-two finishMenzies retains overall lead with relative ease By Mark Zalewski in Hahndorf, South Australia After two days of Australian sweeps at the Tour Down Under, the European contingent answered back. Steven Caethoven and Pieter Ghyllebert of the Belgian Chocolade Jacques team jumped past Aussies Stuart O'Grady and Hilton Clarke in the final 600 meters out of a shattered breakaway with Caethoven taking the win. "The first two days are never that good," said Caethoven. "But now stage three and four are usually my best days. Normally I get stronger because this is just my first race of the season, so I am still building up my form." Caethoven was one of four Chocolade Jacques riders in the final break of fourteen, which splintered on the 20km finishing circuits. On the bell lap it was Eduardo Gonzalo Ramirez (Agritubel) launching an attack with Hilton Clarke (Navigators Insurance) going with, followed by hometown favourite Stuart O'Grady (CSC). "Just cresting the climb O'Grady made it onto us and we had like thirty seconds," said Clarke. "We rode the whole last lap but the two of them weren't ready to lay down. I think they could tell I had good form and were nervous of me in the sprint. They were just foxing too much - I knew we were foxing way too much and not committing all the way to the line." "When we got caught at 600 to go the Chocolade Jacques riders were way too fresh, coming straight by me," Clarke continued. "I wasn't able to get on their wheel - O'Grady was on my wheel and was able to come off to get third. I came fourth and I'm really disappointed." At least as disappointed had to be O'Grady, who was named the stage's most aggressive rider for initiating the days first break at the fifteen kilometer mark, up a healthy but unrated climb; then continuing to be in, as well as driving, all of the day's breaks. "Stuey is obviously motivated riding at home," said Barloworld's captain Robbie Hunter. "He knows the area really well and he went at a good time. But once he went off the front nobody wanted to roll it. The break wasn't working at all and that's why it ended up in pieces." But the pieces eventually were picked up, including all four Chocolade Jacques teammates coming together, tipping the scales well into their favour. "It was constantly attacking," said Caethoven. "We had one in each group but eventually it all came back together." Caethoven also found the overcast skies and cooler temperatures a bit easier going. "It was much easier to do an effort today because yesterday, if you did an effort, you would explode because of the heat!" As he mentioned, Caethoven is still just starting his season and the top-level of his career. "I really hope to get into the ProTour at the end of the season. I would like to score in Gent-Wevelgem because Flanders and Paris-Roubaix are just too big for me [at this stage.] " Race leader Karl Menzies (Australia - UniSA) was never alone today; with his team riding strong on the front and with many curious eyes waiting to spot any signs of weakness, particularly on the KOM climb. "Pretty hectic and full-on," Menzies said about the day. "It's tough; a lot of attacks on the start and you have to keep an eye on GC guys. The Chocolade Jacques guy slipped away and we had to shut it down." Regarding the climbing, Menzies chuckled, "No big drama, I didn't do too bad! Then it was letting the right group go. They took out seven minutes but we made sure it didn't blow out. The boys all rode well." But Menzies knows the week is far from over. "Saturday, that's the day, so I'm just trying to save as many cookies as I can through the week." "I saw he was still there after the top of the big climb, so he obviously climbs alright for a big guy," said CSC's Luke Roberts. "We'll have to keep putting the pressure on him - but maybe it's not on the climbs where we'll have to try and break him. And it's not only him we have to beat as well - we are sitting third and seventh on the overall. Lars has to make a pretty big move to take the overall lead. But we have several cards up our sleeves." How it unfolded The racing began in earnest today, with the overall classification well on the way to being decided. Therefore, riders looking to take out individual stage wins had a much better chance today; so long as they were not one of the seventeen that had potential to threaten Karl Menzies' lead. The first shot came from the local bloke Stuart O"Grady, who put in a dig on the first climb out of the river town of Mannum up towards the first sprint line at Tungkillo. O'Grady's move was countered quickly by Nicholas Roche (Credit Agricole) as well as others. But Stuey kept at it. "Today it was always going to be a break going away," said last year's winner Simon Gerrans (AG2r Prevoyance). "O'Grady got things started and I was keen to get in the moves then, because if the right combination went it would go away. Unfortunately we had that Chocolade Jacques dude in there that was only three minutes down overall so they weren't going to let it go. When I saw him there I attacked that group, but he came with, so then I attacked again. He was pretty keen to get away." That rider was Serge Pauwels who was part of the eighteen rider break that got away yesterday. "Plenty of guys were telling him he shouldn't be there, but he was really strong," said Gerrans. "We kept attacking him and he kept riding up to us and we couldn't shake him." Another rider that seems to be in every break this week is the young Australian Gene Bates (SouthAustralia.com-AIS) who was keen on getting sprint points, as well as just showing his new bosses what he can do. "The form is good while it's here!" joked Bates after the stage. "I always try to go good at this race. I'm on a new team and I wanted to impress them early. Hopefully I can pull something bigger later in the week." One of the side effects of O'Grady and the early moves was to put pressure on the Australia-UniSA team, testing their strength at defending the lead. "It was full-on from the start," said CSC's Luke Roberts. "We could see the UniSA guys were under a bit of pressure so we decided to put a bit of extra pressure on ourselves. Early on when Stuart went up the road I decided to have a go and tried to jump across, maybe having a chance to shift the GC a little bit. I got there but the group didn't get away." A multitude of double-digit breaks went away and came back, with many of the same riders. A group of twenty-one finally seemed to get free of the peloton, likely because Australia-UniSA knew it was too close to the finish to be a threat. Out of this break a smaller group escaped, including: Robbie Hunter (Barloworld), Ludovic Turpin (AG2r Prevoyance), Stuart O'Grady (Team CSC), Alexandre Botcharov, Christophe Edaleine (Credit Agricole), Martin Mueller (Team Milram), Pieter Jacobs (Unibet.com), Steven Caethoven, Koen Barbe, Pieter Ghyllebert, Kurt Hovelynck (Chocolade Jacques - Topsport Vlaanderen), Hilton Clarke (Navigators Insurance Cycling Team), Eduardo Gonzalo (Agritubel), Benoit Sinner, Jonathon Clarke (SouthAustralia.com-AIS). Most importantly, four Chocolade Jacques riders were present, giving them the clear advantage. Trying to neutralize the advantage was Eduardo Gonzalo. "At the bell lap on the climb after the line the Agributel guy attacked and I was straight onto him with a big gap," said Hilton. O'Grady also bridged across while the rest of the break floundered. "Everyone was looking at us," said Caethoven. "They just did the same old stupid thing, picked one guy to attack and then another and another," said Hunter, about the splits behind. However, those splits eventually reformed in the final kilometer and the Chocolade Jacques riders regained their advantage. "I guess one day it finally worked for them," Hunter said, shrugging his shoulders. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Mark Gunter/www.pbase.com/gunterphotograph
