12th Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 2-11, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 8 - February 9: Proton, Shah Alam - Genting Highlands, 84.4 kmSerpa again brilliant, but Charteau holds strong on Genting"The Tour de Langkawi is not finished," say Selle ItaliaBy Anthony Tan in Genting Highlands, Malaysia Despite breaking clear of the groupe maillot jaune more than 15 kilometres from the top of Malaysia's most infamous ascent, José Serpa's move was far from audacious: he had a job to do, he knew he could win. The only question remaining was this: would it be enough to win overall? Angelically gliding up the gruelling 17 kilometre-long climb with team-mate Walter Pedraza and precocious Venezuelan climber José Rujano (Unibet.com), the trio rode Genting like a three-man team time trial, before Serpa left them both with four kilometres to go. The 27 year-old gave it everything, crossing the line 83 kilometres from today's start at the majestic Shah Alam with arms aloft, his index fingers pointed directly towards the sky above him - his second victory atop Genting in as many years. "Our strategy was to attack at the beginning of the climb with the young Fabio Duarte," explained Serpa. "After, Walter Pedraza was followed by José Rujano, but our [final] card was me at the finish - I'm happy to win here for the second year." Pedraza arrived one minute and 16 seconds after; 28 seconds later was Rujano; 2'25 behind was defending champion David George from South Africa, who sprinted for the line; the Giant Asia duo of Jai Crawford and Ghader Mizbani rounding out the top six and finishing within three minutes of today's winner. "I'm happy to reclaim the Asian rider's jersey - I had a good day today," said Mizbani, adding that the competition to be the best Asian rider is still very close, with just 40 seconds separating the top three. "But where is the yellow jersey?" said MC David Duffield to the expectant audience, Frenchman Anthony Charteau (Crédit Agricole) only allowed to lose four minutes to retain his overall lead. Charteau must have heard him. Because three minutes and thirty-six seconds after Serpa, the maillot jaune emerged from the mist, turned around to look back at the clock behind him, and defiantly punched the air with absolute delight. "It's been a terribly hard stage," said the Frenchman, who, unlike the previous four days, was now smiling with confidence. "The pain is something altogether different... it was really, really painful today, but it will remain a good day in cycling for me." Continued Charteau, "I want to thank my team, who have done a fantastic job to help me keep the lead. Everything went according to what we expected; we knew Selle Italia would attack early - that was what they were supposed to do with the two super climbers they had. As for myself, I preferred to ride within myself and not go beyond my limits. "Now I've got a one-minute lead... it's going to be another hard day tomorrow, and will require another day of teamwork - but I'm confident my team can do it again tomorrow," he said. Perhaps the biggest loser was yesterday's stage winner Shinichi Fukushima, the Nippo-Meitan Hompo rider falling as quickly out of overall contention as his came into it, losing nine and a half minutes and disappointingly dropping 22 places to end the day 24th overall. Thomas Voeckler (Bouygues Telecom) and Ian McLeod (Française des Jeux), fourth and sixth at the start of the day, also fared less than well, dropping out of the top 10 on GC. "I don't know if this is my best day as a cyclist," mused Charteau when asked the question. "I won a stage of the Tour of Catalunya, which is a UCI ProTour race and my first professional win. If, on Sunday, I win the Tour de Langkawi, it will be my first stage race [victory] and winning a stage race is something I've thought about for a long time. To stay in the wings of my team-mates is something I was not used to at first, but it will remain a great memory." Two stages are all that remain before the 27 year-old Charteau is crowned winner of the 2007 Le Tour de Langkawi, and while overall victory should be a formality, Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia team manager Gianni Savio was adamant the race is not over. "We hoped the leader had a bad day," Savio said, "but he defended very well and will probably be the winner. But also, the Tour de Langkawi is not finished; tomorrow is another day, and our team, Selle Italia, we can still attack." How it unfoldedAt 10am this morning, hot and sunny conditions greeted the 124 remaining riders in front of the Proton Centre of Excellence at the Shah Alam mosque. Today's test was just 83 kilometres long, but with the climb of Genting looming in the distance, it was a tortuous one at that. Just before the first Petronas sprint at km 17, four riders - Tiaan Kannemeyer (South Africa), Sergey Kolesnikov (Unibet.com), José Luis Arrieta (AG2R Prévoyance) and Steffen Weigold (Tinkoff Credit Systems) - went away, with another pair, Gene Bates (SouthAustralia.com) and Sergiy Matveyev (Ceramiche Panaria Navigare), coming along for the ride. With 49 kilometres covered, it was a super-fast first hour, keeping the distance between the break and peloton at a little more than a minute. After 55 kilometres, Fabio Duarte (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia) joined the sextet, before Sandy Casar (Française des Jeux) also bridged the gap, only to attack his companions straight away. By the base of Genting, signalling 20 kilometres to go, four riders - Kolesnikov, Kannemeyer, José Rujano (Unibet.com) and Walter Pedraza (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia) - were out in front, while the groupe maillot jaune was led by Crédit Agricole for their man Anthony Charteau. With 15k to go, a one-minute gap had opened up between Rujano and Pedraza (who had dropped Kolesnikov and Kannemeyer) and maillot jaune Charteau; a minute later, Pedraza's team-mate and danger man José Serpa joined the leaders to form a formidable lead trio. 10 kilometres from the finish, the groupe maillot jaune, who were impressively containing their losses by less than a minute, consisted of nine men: Charteau, Bellotti, Le Boulanger, Doi, Duggan, Crawford, Mizbani, Askari and Kolesnikov. Five clicks later, Rujano was dropped from the lead three, leaving the dynamic Colombian duo of Serpa and Pedraza to ride alone, with one assured of certain victory. "In the car, we saw Walter was in a little bit of difficulty," said Selle Italia team manager Gianni Savio, "so we told him to continue with his 'passo', his own rhythm, and not use too much force. For this reason, José Serpa went alone." And so four kilometres from the finish, that's exactly what he did, dancing a tune that could not be imitated and finishing 1'16 clear of Pedraza and 1'44 ahead of Rujano. Impressive rides were also achieved by David George (South Africa, 4th @ 2'25), the Giant Asia duo of Jai Crawford and Ghader Mizbani (5th and 6th @ 2'51 and 3'00), Yoann Le Boulanger (Bouygues Telecom, 7th @ 3'21), Yokihiro Doi (Skil Shimano, 9th @ 3'31) and, of course, maillot jaune Anthony Charteau (Crédit Agricole, 10th @ 3'36), who retained his lead as a result.
