12th Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 2-11, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - February 7: Kuala Terengganu - Cukai, 141.5 km"Yeeeaaah!" Alberto's lucky Loddo-rySelle Italia: "We have everything to gain and nothing to lose"By Anthony Tan in Cukai, Malaysia Such was the yell that emanated from the mouth of today's winner as he crossed the line in Cukai. And so far, it seems the only person challenging Alberto Loddo is Alberto Loddo himself. Once again, the Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia sprinter made a mockery of the rest of the sprinters at the Le Tour de Langkawi. Besting Maximiliano Richeze (Ceramiche Panaria Navigare) and American Brad Huff (Team Slipstream) with apparent ease to claim his fourth stage victory, the 28 year-old is now one away from equalling Australian Graeme Brown's five-win record he earned in 2005. "I won't say how many wins I will take," answered Loddo on his chances, "but if the team keeps working the same way, there might be another win or more. "The Selle Italia team will also try and win the overall GC with Pedraza or Serpa; at this stage, we have everything to gain and nothing to lose," he said. Team manager Gianni Savio, who has seen his fair share of talents come and go from his team, said he expected his reborn sprint signing to do well in Malaysia, but not this well: "I thought Alberto would be like this in this race, but I didn't think he could win four stages," he admitted. "Our philosophy is to do the best we can, and we don't work to set a record," continued Savio. "We want to be protagonists in this race, because we respect the adversaries, we respect the organisers and we respect the people - so we always try to make a show, a 'spectaccolo'." Nevertheless, a fifth stage victory is well within reach. But with Richeze arguably his only real challenger here, how would he fare against the big boys at a race like the Giro d'Italia? Replied Loddo, "The Giro d'Italia is a big race and I really hope our team gets a start, especially because this year it starts in my home region; I hope to do as well in the Giro as I have done here." However, despite being another sprinters' stage tomorrow, Loddo won't have the entire team at his disposal - climbers Walter Pedraza and José Serpa are due to meet their destiny in Genting two days from now. "Sure, and we'll try to win with Alberto," Savio said, "but it was not easy yesterday, it was absolutely not easy today, and I think it will be more difficult tomorrow, because more riders are attacking each day, and it is very difficult to control the attacks. Also, Pedraza and Serpa are our men for Genting." Speaking of Genting, equipe Crédit Agricole should be confident that barring disaster, they can pull off the overall win with maillot jaune Anthony Charteau, his four-minute advantage over Pedraza a very handy lead indeed. "I had a feeling my legs were going okay today," said Charteau, "and as I said yesterday and the day before, I'm waiting for Genting to see if I can win or not. "I'm not nervous, because it's going to be a purely physical effort. The team trusts me, and I know it will be a hard climb, where I will have to stay focused all the way; it will be a win or lose situation but now I'm confident." How it unfoldedThe sixth stage hugged the coastal route all the way down the eastern peninsula, from yesterday's finish in Kuala Terengganu to Cukai, located smack-bang in the middle of this palm tree-lined seaboard. No rain this morning, but a thick cover of cloud offered the 127-strong peloton some respite before the glazing sun would wipe much of this out as the day wore on. A relatively short stage at 141 kilometres, the organisers nevertheless managed to include three hotspot sprints and one Cat. 3 mountains prime at Kijal, its position 14 kilometres from the finish a potential springboard for a late-stage breakaway. After the usual bagarre, five riders - Sandy Casar (Française des Jeux), Mike Creed (Team Slipstream), Yoshimasa Hirose (Skil Shimano) and Shinichi Fukushima (Nippo-Meitan Hompo) - escaped after 30 kilometres and opened up a maximum lead of three minutes at km 43. Maillot jaune Anthony Charteau's Crédit Agricole team were helped by Tinkoff Credit Systems and Vitoria to keep the break in check, with the quintet finally giving in after 100 kilometres. 11 kilometres later and with just 30k to go, Shinchi's bro Koji took flight with Tinkoff's Salvatore Commesso, opening up a nice gap of just over a minute and holding off the now fast-moving peloton over the KOM in Kijal. However by this stage, their pair were less than 30 seconds ahead of the bunch, who had them within sight. Another four made it across with 6k to go, but the new move was short lived and it became peloton groupé once again, for the third time in as many days. The bunch sprint was a formality for Alberto Loddo, who opened the afterburners with roughly 250 metres remaining and chose his line down the right-hand barriers, producing a superior turn of speed for his fourth stage victory at the Le Tour de Langkawi. "In the final kilometre, I was well positioned," said Loddo. "I was in third wheel till 500 [metres] to go. One rider from South Africa [Rupert Rheeder] was at the front coming into the final corner, but I had no problems overtaking him.
