12th Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 2-11, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - February 6: Kota Baru - Kuala Terengganu, 167.0 kmThe rhythm to win: Loddo lands a hat-trickBy Anthony Tan in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia Never to be outdone by higher-ranked teams at the Le Tour de Langkawi, Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia continue to show they're all business and all class when in Malaysia. As the peloton sailed down the eastern peninsula, looking out left to the wide expanse of the South China Sea, destination Kuala Terengganu, many were contemplating the rich lives they lead as professional cyclists. Alberto Loddo was thinking only of a third stage victory. Today, the born-again sprinter appeared to be growing ever-stronger and is fast becoming a class above the rest, outgunning Ceramiche Panaria Navigare's Maximiliano Richeze for what seemed like the tenth time and putting daylight between themselves and the rest of the peloton, led home by Aussie young-gun Nicholas Sanderson (SouthAustralia.com-AIS). Said Loddo of the sprint, "Five-hundred metres from the finish line, the Tinkoff team set the pace, and at 350 metres, I was already in my 11 [sprocket], ready for sprinting... I found myself [in front] with 300 metres to go; it was a long way out, but I made it." "My team did great work again today. It was a special sprint [victory], because there aren't big trains in the race; like yesterday, we had one rider in the break, and that was the plan set by our directeurs, Savio and Bellini," he explained with quiet confidence. A hat-trick of victories in the bag and four sprint stages to go, the possibility of equalling - and surpassing - Australian rider Graeme Brown's record of five stage wins he achieved two years ago is very real indeed. That, to him and his team, is far more important than the final points classification, which he is likely to receive by default, courtesy of his superior speed. Loddo believes the time off he had after he left the cycling world in 2004 has made him stronger than he ever was, and showed his gratitude to the well-dressed, silver-haired man with a moustache, standing in the shadows behind him at the post-race press conference. "I have to thank Gianni Savio," he said, "who brought me back to the [professional] peloton. I also have to thank him for taking me to the Vuelta Tachira before coming here, because those 10 days of racing have given me the right rhythm and legs for sprinting... and winning." Race leader Anthony Charteau's Crédit Agricole team had a relatively easy day in the saddle, as a non-threatening breakaway took flight early on and was reeled in by Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia in the latter part of the stage. The next two days will simply be about rest and recovery for the 27 year-old Frenchman, before he faces arguably the toughest test of his life this Friday as the race heads towards the fearsome climb of Genting. "It's been a very good day for us," said Charteau. "Everything went fine, because the breakaway went early with no-one really dangerous on GC; the most dangerous was [name] and he was 12 minutes down on GC, so it was quite easy for us to keep the bunch seven to eight minutes behind the breakaway." Tomorrow's provides another coastal run for the Tour de Langkawi peloton, and yet another chance for Alberto Loddo, which begins in Kuala Terengganu and ends a 141.5 kilometres later in Cukai. How it unfoldedOvernight and morning showers made for a damp, muggy start in Kota Bharu, though this sort of weather is typical for the tropics and was expected to clear later in the day. With rain capes on, 127 riders - minus three non-starters, Jegou and Zagari, both injured in yesterday's crash, and Aussie Shaun Higgerson, who is sick - rolled out for another dead-flat day, this time hugging the eastern seaboard and ending in Kuala Terengganu, 167 kilometres down the road. Tipped to be another perfect stage for the sprinters, it nevertheless didn't stop a barrage of early breakaway attempts, the one to be in coming after 58 kilometres. Despite facing a strong headwind, the sextet - comprised of Franck Renier (Equipe Bouygues Telecom), Julio Alberto Perez Cuapio (Ceramiche Panaria Navigare), Nickolai Trusov (Tinkoff Credit Systems), Sergio Barbero (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia), Johannes Jacobus Kachelhoffer (South Africa) and Miyataka Shimizu (Nippo-Meitan Hompo) - forged a near five and a half minute lead after 100 kilometres' racing. Behind them, there were more than a few riders having trouble with the blustery conditions, as the peloton splintered into three before regrouping with some 40 kilometres to go, the advantage of the lead group under two minutes by km 125. With 10k remaining, the gap was less than a minute and the break was doomed, though three of the original six soldiered on for another six kilometres before meeting their fate. The final kilometre saw Tinkoff Credit Systems lead out the bunch for their Russian sprinter Nickolai Trusov, but at the line, he was usurped by a handful of riders, among them Alberto Loddo (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia) and Maximiliano Richeze (Ceramiche Panaria Navigare), the former far too fast and far too good.
