12th Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 2-11, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - February 5: Gua Musang - Kota Bharu, 178.1 kmTwice is nice: Loddo thrives in chaosBy Anthony Tan in Kota Bharu, Malaysia Or should that be 'Loddo surviving in chaos'? Unfortunately, crashes are part and parcel of the wild world of bunch sprinting, and today's finish in Kota Bharu was no exception. When you add to the mix a large variation in ability, as is the case at the Le Tour de Langkawi, the danger is multiplied. Despite the inherent dangers, however, the show must go on, and it was opening stage winner Alberto Loddo (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni) who put on the day's best performance, avoiding the mayhem to thrive in chaos. Showing a clean pair of wheels against Ceramiche Panaria Navigare arch-rival Maximiliano Richeze - the team now down one man courtesy of Ruben Bongiorno's exit yesterday - and South African Daryl Impey, with American Brad Huff (Team Slipstream) taking his second fourth place, the 28 year-old Italian told the press one is good, but twice is nicer. "First of all," began Loddo, "I have to thank my team-mates who lead me out till the final metres; they rode to perfection for me." "Was the win easier than his first?" he was asked. "Easier? No. Before the finale, I started talking with the [managers in the] team car and told them I was feeling good, so everyone worked hard to bridge the gap. There was still one rider away very close to the finish, but we managed to close the gap. "In actual fact, I didn't even realise there had been a crash until later; I stayed in the first positions when it happened. I really hope no-one is seriously injured," said Loddo, before it was announced Française des Jeux's Lilian Jégou had come off worst with a broken hand. Loddo also finds himself the new sprints leader, just a point away from Mad Max Richeze, though like most of the teams here without a real GC contender, Panaria have come here for stage wins - anything else is a bonus. But with their other star sprinter Bongiorno waving arrivederci after the stage to the Cameron Highlands, the team will have to start working overtime to equal their success of years gone past. Unsurprising for a quality outfit, race leader Anthony Charteau's Crédit Agricole squad had no problems controlling the race today, indicating they'll most likely continue to ride this way for the next three stages. "The first 60 kilometres were difficult, because we only have a team of six riders," said the Frenchman. "It's not so easy to control the race with just six guys. "It's out of the question that I will attack or sprint for bonus seconds," answered Charteau about the game plan till Genting. "We'll try to control the bunch in the same way we did today, or let some breakaway go with riders who aren't a threat on GC. But we have no plan to attack before the next mountain stage - that's where everything will happen." Asked if there's any chance of knocking Charteau off his perch come Genting, Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni direttore sportivo Gianni Savio replied: "Yesterday, Charteau won in spectacular fashion and was very strong, so I think he will have the condition of yesterday in Genting. "It will be very difficult for us to be first in the overall classification, but we will try; in cycling, one rider has good condition one day, and another day, he has less condition." Savio's mouth turned to a slightly cunning smile before adding, "We hope he has less condition in Genting..." While the overall race may be decided, an interesting competition is the Asian rider classification, currently being led by Hossein Askari (Giant Asia Racing Team). Just two minutes separates the top ten riders, who are spread amongst six teams - making it a fiercely fought competition that will no doubt be sorted out following the stage to Genting. How it unfoldedThere were a few casualties from yesterday's stage to the Cameron Highlands: there were no abandons, but five riders didn't make the time cut, resulting in 130 riders lining up in Gua Musang for today's flat stage to Kota Bharu. Surprise surprise - many attacks began right from the get-go, with Sergiy Matveyev (Ceramiche Panaria Navigare), Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff Credit Systems), Nicholas White and David George (South Africa) and José Serpa (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia) taking flight early on, although with the latter two danger men on GC, they were brought back after 19 kilometres. At Felda Ciku (km 49.6), Hossein Askari (Giant Asia Racing Team) became the new leader on the Asian rider classification, winning the first of the day's three intermediate sprints. Breakaways continued to try their luck but none were successful till Tiaan Kannemeyer (South Africa), Pierre Drancourt (Bouygues Telecom), Luis Rodriguez and Stijn Vandenbergh (Unibet.com), Fabio Duarte (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia), Serguei Klimov (Tinkoff Credit Systems) and Huub Duyn (Team Slipstream) got away roughly 30 kilometres later, enjoying a 1'38 lead by km 90. As Crédit Agricole policed the peloton for their maillot jaune Anthony Charteau, and to a lesser extent Tinkoff Credit Systems, the septet gained only a maximum two and a half minutes advantage at km 115. Inexorably, the break was destined to be caught heading into Kota Bharu, but not before Klimov and Drancourt resisted the chase-down, the former holding on for dear life until just two kilometres to go. Courtesy of great teamwork, the final sprint was comfortably won by Alberto Loddo (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni), who made light work of Maximiliano Richeze (Ceramiche Panaria Navigare) and Daryl Impey (South Africa); however, the stage was marred by a small pile-up that saw at least three riders hit the deck. Worst off was Française des Jeux's Lilian Jégou, the Frenchman carted off to hospital and later diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his hand. Wesley Sulzberger (SouthAustralia.com) and Amir Zargari (Azad University Team) were also casualties, but at the time of writing, only Jégou was confirmed as a non-starter for tomorrow's 167 kilometre fifth stage to Kuala Terengganu.
