12th Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 2-11, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - February 3: Kangar - Kulim, 166.2 kmBella volata Panaria!Mad Max Richeze repeats the featBy Anthony Tan in Kulim, Malaysia As the mercury rose, so did the competition among the sprinters. Today in Kulim, Ceramiche Panaria Navigare made no mistake, banking on proven Langkawi performer Maximiliano Richeze who delivered with interest, as he launched himself with 250 metres remaining, confidently chose his line down the centre of the road, and remained unchallenged. A distant second was South African Daryl Impey, a hair's breadth separating he and yesterday's winner Alberto Loddo. "We started the stage with the intention of winning it today," declared Richeze. "It was either me or [Ruben] Bongiorno." "Yesterday, we tried a different strategy - we didn't pull the train properly, and [stage winner] Loddo took advantage of this. "So we changed our approach: instead of racing for second or third place, we decided only one of us would sprint [for the win], and it was deemed it would be me. "With two kilometres to go Bongiorno told me he didn't feel too good, so we decided the lead-out [train] would be for myself. I felt very strong; at 250 metres [to go] I gave my all - and I made it." Asked if the wide-open roads towards the finish suited his sprinting style, Richeze replied eagerly, "Si, si! Even on the small hills, I'm usually good, and with the parcours today, I felt at ease." The triumph gave Richeze's team a triple victory as the Argentine became the new points and race leader, both on a count-back and both against previous maillot jaune Alberto Loddo (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni), repeating his opening stage win from the 2006 LTdL. But with a mountain-top finish to Brinchang, Cameron Highlands on tomorrow's menu du jour, he won't be leader for long; in fact, the topic wasn't even raised at today's post-race press conference! "I am very happy to have won again in Malaysia. [A win in] this race says a lot for me; I'm lucky that I managed to get the yellow jersey again," was all Richeze would say, under no illusion on his chances tomorrow. Koji Fukushima continues to lead the Asian rider and mountains classifications, the latter he's on par with his brother Shinichi. Though like Richeze, Koji shouldn't get too comfortable in his polka-dot maillot, who admitted: "I'm afraid of the mountains because I'm not so good; I want to try my best, though - I will attack again, because I want to make the race. "We want to prove that Asian riders can match the European professionals," said Fukushima, patting Richeze on shoulder as he spoke, signaling a mark of respect. "Today, we attacked but our team also has a good sprinter, so it's difficult to formulate a strategy. But there are many stages for all of [our abilities]." However the real story is one that awaits: What will tomorrow bring? How it unfoldedWith no overnight illness preventing any rider from starting today, 136 colourfully clad men in lycra rolled out of Kangar for the first road stage on the Malaysian mainland. While considerably longer than yesterday's quick 80k loop around Langkawi, the journey to Kulim was not dissimilar in its parcours: three hotspot sprints and one Cat. 4 climb were littered along the 166 kilometre parcours, and a 47.6 metre variation in elevation. Flat for the first 86 kilometres, the final undulating century would prove the most testing. High temps seemed to make for a fast start, as numerous singles, couples and groups tried their chances. Following this bagarre, two men skipped away from the pack, and with just 25 kilometres covered, Sergey Kolesnikov (Unibet.com) and Shinichi Fukushima (Nippo-Meitan Hompo) had built a very handy lead approaching two and a half minutes. After the second sprint in Alor Setar (km 49.3), Kolesnikov and Fukushima were 4'02 ahead of the peloton, who had temporarily gone into sleep mode. Though they weren't totally comatose, keeping the break at bay, somewhere between 4-4½ minutes up till the third and final sprint in Gurun (km 86.0). Cresting the day's sole KOM that signaled 50 kilometres left to race, the distance between the lead pair and the bunch was down to 2'40. Once again, a bunch finish became a likely conclusion. Or did it... The wide roads leading to Kulim provided a perfect opportunity for the fast men of the Tour de Langkawi, as the speedometer needle began ticking up around the 65 km/h mark. With 15 kilometres remaining, it was peloton groupé, but Koji Fukushima bridged across to his bro Shinichi and the Russian, creating an interesting last-ditch twist. Quickly establishing a half-minute advantage and holding it for 10 kilometres, the scenario looked quite promising - but after yesterday, Panaria were having none of it, setting up their man Maximiliano Richeze for his first stage victory of the season. In a ferociously fast finale, the Argentine chose his line straight down the centre of the road, showing a superior turn of speed to triumph over Daryl Impey (South Africa) and overnight leader Alberto Loddo (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni), who, by the day's end, lost his lead to Richeze by less than one second.
