Bravo Charteau: A new leaf has turned
Benissimo Loddo equals stage win record

His stage win at the 2005 Volta Catalunya was significant, but overall victory at this year's Tour de Langkawi marks a turning point for Anthony Charteau.
For the 27 year-old, who hails from Nantes in the west of France and whose schoolmate in Arthon-en-Retz was Paris SG goalkeeper Mickael Landreau, it has taken six seasons as a professional to realise his potential as a stage racer.
Charteau becomes the first Tour de France rider to win the Tour de Langkawi since Italian Paolo Lanfranchi, riding for Mapei-Quickstep at the time, won the race for his second time in 2001. One could say then that the event is near its old level of competition in the race's heyday, and that is very important indeed, as clean, future champions are becoming harder to find nowadays.

"When I came here," began Charteau, "I didn't think I could win, because I came here with the intention of helping Francesco Bellotti to win. But circumstances saw he and team helping me to win, so it's been fantastic."
As a young boy, riding his bike for fun more than anything else, Charteau wanted to become a radio reporter at the Tour de France. Instead, he has become one of the participants at La Grande Boucle, but so far, not one of the protagonists, going for stage wins or the overall classification. The latter may be some way off, perhaps even unrealistic, but don't discount him as a stage winner or temporary holder of the maillot jaune in upcoming Tours de France.
"I'm coming to an age where I need lots of results. And for sure, this race is an important step in my career - I've now shown that not only can I help the leaders, but I can also win races and become a leader."
About his future potential, Charteau said modestly, "I think it will be too difficult for me to win a ProTour stage race, but maybe stages [in ProTour events] and for the rest of the time, I will help my leaders."

The same goes for Alberto Loddo, a quintuple stage winner in this race who showed he was a class above the rest, taking out today's final stage in downtown Kuala Lumpur ahead of Nikolai Trusov (Tinkoff Credit Systems) and Maxmiliano Richeze (Ceramiche Panaria Navigare), and confirming his status as the best sprinter by far.
"That was one of our goals," explained Loddo, "to bring home the green jersey. "It looks like a lot of wins, but with all the work done by the team, winning [stages] wasn't so difficult.
That he beat young Argentine Maxmiliano Richeze so convincingly, who finished three times in the top five as a neo-pro at last year's Giro d'Italia, says something. But like a number of past winners of the sprint jersey at the Tour de Langkawi including Germany's Steffen Radochla (2006 sprint champion) and Australian Graeme Brown (2005), Loddo is yet to realise his potential in the biggest of races. Provided his Selle Italia squadra are invited, he'll get that chance at this year's Giro d'Italia.
"I'm very happy and I want to thank to thank my team for all the great work they've done to enable me to win these five stages. Now, I really hope our team will be invited to the Giro, because I really want to win the third stage to Cagliari, which is my home town," said Loddo.

Equally, José Serpa and Langkawi mountains champion Walter Pedraza, second and third overall and both second year pros, have oodles of talent; their team manager Gianni Savio has an uncanny knack of finding Colombian cycling's next big thing - his problem is keeping them. If it hadn't been for Charteau's lucky break on the third stage to Cameron Highlands, Selle Italia would no doubt have taken the top two steps on the podium. Nevertheless, Serpa and Pedraza have bigger fish to fry, but at 27 and 25 years old, time is on their side.
"I am very happy to be the king of the mountains. It was a very good race and very well organised, and I also hope our team will be invited to the Giro d'Italia, so I can try to be the king of the mountains there, too.
"If we are invited [to the Giro]," continued Pedraza, "the big mountains are not a problem; the problem is not whether the mountains are large or small, the problem is to be in good condition when it comes to the mountains."
Behind the major classifications, it was a battle royale to be the best Asian rider. Eventually won by Iran's Ghader Mizbani, just 40 seconds separated the top three riders, who were miles ahead of fourth-placed Tonton Susanto (Letua Cycling Team) - but nevertheless, the outlook looks positive for the future.

"You know, the last few years, Asian riders have got much better," Mizbani said. "In no small part, it's due to the birth of more Asian teams, and this has let the riders [from Asia] become stronger, enabling them to compete better in races like the Tour de Langkawi."
Supporting this statement, for the first time in the race's history, an Asian squad took out the teams classification. As Tina Turner's tune 'Simply the best' belted out of the speakers for what seemed like the thousandth time, the Giant Asia Racing Team stood tall on the podium; in particular, full credit goes to Australian Jai Crawford, fifth overall, best Asian rider Mizbani, sixth, and Hossein Askari, who rounded out the top ten overall.
So then... plenty of champagne tonight for our overall winner? "Yes, maybe a quick one, but not too much," said Charteau. "We're already leaving for the airport tonight to go back to France."
The future...

So what of the race's future? This week, UCI president Pat McQuaid spent a busy three days here in Malaysia, in an attempt to expedite payments to as yet unpaid creditors. He assured the press that talks with affected stakeholders had gone well, and was optimistic enough to say the race has the potential to be a ProTour event as early as 2009.
Tour de Langkawi chief operating officer and deputy president of the Malaysian National Cycling Federation, Datuk Naim Mohamed, is, not surprisingly, all for it, too - but now suggests that there may be two separate events in the future: a ProTour and non-ProTour stage race, the latter a necessity to support the development of cycling in Asia.
"We would like cycling to be part of the core sports programme [in Malaysia] and we are fighting for this," said Datuk Mohamed a few days ago.
"It is a question of how we structure all activities right from the grassroots level. If the benefit is to promote the country, then I think this race is doing a good job. If ever the ProTour is going to be moved out of Europe, then we would like to big for it and have a ProTour race in Malaysia apart from the Le Tour de Langkawi."
How - or if - this will happen is another thing, but first things first: let's get the Le Tour de Langkawi back on track, and back to its former glory.
How it unfolded

Under stifling conditions not unlike yesterday, the 102 remaining riders left Merdeka Square for their final 80.4 kilometres in the 2007 Le Tour de Langkawi. Naturally, it was one of the Fukushima brothers along with two others that tried their luck in the first of twelve 6.7 kilometre laps in downtown KL, but the peloton - in particular Selle Italia and Tinkoff - weren't willing to let a break go so early in the peace.
Over the next three laps, a few more tried their luck, but none stuck till the fifth lap, when a three-rider break went clear, comprised of Sandy Casar (Française des Jeux), Steffen Weigold (Tinkoff Credit Systems) and Koji Fukushima (Nippo-Meitan Hompo). The trio continued to keep their half-minute lead past the halfway mark, and right till the penultimate lap, when they were eventually caught inside 10 kilometres to go.
SouthAustralia.com's Gene Bates then launched an excellent counter, there wasn't quite enough gas in his tank, so with eight kilometres to go, it was all together again. FdJ's Ian McLeod took flight inside the final five kilometres, but he too was caught, and in the ensuing bunch gallop, Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Selle Italia's Alberto Loddo again proved unstoppable in a thrilling sprint finale. And in doing so, Loddo equalled Australian rider Graeme Brown's record of five stage wins achieved in 2005.
