Geelong Women's Tour - 2.2Australia, February 27-March 1, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Next Stage Stage 1 - February 27: Portarlington time trial, 8kmBausch Blasts Home in Time TrialKentucky Woman Claims Opening Stage of Geelong Women's TourBy John Michael Flynn at Port Arlington, Australia Her team might have enjoyed success over the years at the Geelong Women's Tour, but make no mistake, the performance of native Kentuckian Dotsie Bausch (Colavita / Sutter Home presented by Cooking Light), came as a complete surprise today. Rocketing home with the wind at her back on the Port Arlington waterfront, Bausch completed the opening time trial at the Geelong Women's Tour in a time of 11 minutes 33 seconds, five seconds in front of German track pursuitist Larissa Kleinmann and seven seconds ahead of World Cup series champion Nicole Cooke. "I just trained really, really hard this winter with a specific time trial coach because I really wanted to get good at these. It's just been a good winter," an excited Bausch told Cyclingnews after receiving confirmation of her first placing. "Gosh it's beautiful here, but I tried not to look at the scenery too much," she added. "It was headwind, head-cross on the way out and a tail-cross on the way home. "When I rounded the bend, I could see the finish line and I knew that it was [in the vicinity of] eleven minutes." The question now is, can the American contend for the overall at the Geelong Tour? With the stage two criterium unlikely to make a major difference to the general classification, the stage that matters is tomorrow's road stage at Lara , which includes a brutal ascent. "Yeah, I absolutely can, I'm more of a climber honestly," Bausch said. "I have a really strong team here with me and we're going to go for it." The Colavita team also includes the ever-present Tina Pic, a two time winner of the Barwon Heads stage at the Geelong Tour. Kleinmann On Song for World Track ChampionshipsFor a time today, the 'clubhouse' lead was held by the likes of former World Champions Judith Arndt and Susan Ljungskog. In the end, Nicole Cooke, was the only one of the pre-race favourites to make the podium German track pursuitist Larissa Kleinmann also upstaged many of women's cycling's biggest names to finish second in the opening time trial. A member of the German National Team, Kleinmann is in training for next month's World Track Championships in Majorca. "It was a perfect start for me, I was surprised but I can take it," Kleinmann said. "I just did one men's race last week and I'm just in training so I didn't know where I was at. It's really good training for the World Track Championships." World Cup series champion Nicole Cooke of Great Britain was also pleased with her form. Cooke raced the Geelong World Cup last year, but this is the first time she has contested the Geelong Women's Tour. "I'm very happy with the start to the season, it bodes well for the coming week's racing," Cooke said. "It was a very tough course with the wind, it was just a case of going out hard into the wind and then trying to make the most of the tailwind coming home." A world class field of 101 cyclists is contesting the Geelong Women's Tour, the traditional lead-up event to the opening race in the World Cup series, which will be staged on a street circuit in the Victorian coastal city of Geelong on Saturday.
