Tour of California - 2.HCUSA, February 18-25, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - February 21: Stockton to San José, 152.2kmVoigt powers to second CSC win in as many days
Tough climbs make big changes to categoriesBy Mark Zalewski in San Jose, with additional reporting from Kirsten Robbins "I was very lucky today that I had distance before the climb or today might not finish the way it did," said Voigt. "I was waiting for Bobby Julich so I had a little bit of [an easy] ride for the last 20 km and I had a chance to save my legs a little bit. I figured it should be possible to win the stage. I am never going to win a sprint against Tom Boonen but with a little group of five riders I thought I had a fair chance." "Levi is on good form but luckily I knew he needed a couple of guys to go over with him so he had to wait for me!" chuckled Horner. "We were working together with what we could gain in the race, being Americans had nothing to do with it. It was hard all day today. What I liked about today's race was that there were no races for time bonuses. So it really forced Discovery to do the bulk of the work, which is the way it should be in a stage like this. They did a fantastic job today and hats off to them. Rabobank hopped on the front for a bit to help bring some of the time back." When asked if he was surprised by the help from Rabobank, Leipheimer said no. "Ardila [Cano] had a great prologue, which is a sign he is riding well. And I have been hearing from Rasmussen that Gesink has been riding well. I think they made the right choice -- they weren't going to be in the race unless they closed it down... and thank God for us!" Leipheimer and Discovery Channel do owe a bit of thanks to Rabobank for the help, as the days of defending the lead are taking a toll. "I feel like when you do a really hard time trial and your ass is all locked up... that's what I feel like right now," Tony Cruz told Cyclingnews. I did a lot more [today] than I would like to be doing, unfortunately." "Tomorrow we have to just control the race, and not mess around like we did today. I would just rather take over from the gun, set the pace, then let a few guys get away. I had an idea it would turn out like that, and when I saw seventeen guys up the road with Jens Voigt and only one of us, I was pissed -- pissed at myself for not being there because we were going to have a shitty day. But it's racing." The one teammate Cruz referred to was strongman Jason McCartney, who rode smartly in the break and saved enough to help Leipheimer as the peloton made the catch on the Sierra Road KOM. "Jason was phenomenal in the end and worked so hard today," said Leipheimer. "Jason, as well as the whole team, was extraordinary today. Today was a bike race -- it was a battle out there and all of the guys on Discovery suffered today. I personally saw Allan, Tony and Brian get dropped and come back, with the grimmace on their face all day long." Leipheimer said that they tried to not let such a big group get away, but had to be patient and let the course do its work. "We were really trying to close the gap when it was only 30 seconds but we couldn’t. We were going 65 k/h and needed to go 70k/h. It is really hard and trying to catch seventeen riders going that fast. So we decided not to panic and just stay calm to close the gap slowly. We accepted that fact that it was going to be an all day suffer for the team and we knew we still had two climbs to go." With McCartney waiting up the road at the second KOM and riders like Basso driving it hard up the climb, Leipheimer was able to play cards that he did not have last year. "Discovery Channel chased me down and this year," he said. "I am on their team now and that is the difference. I knew with Jason up there on the climb that I didn't want to go too hard and go past him because I needed him. It worked out perfect -- I didn't have to let off that much and we still went up the climb pretty fast. When we got over the top and started the down hill I was having a lot of fun because Chris, Jens, Jason and I were really flying. We were putting down some smack there and just flying. I know when the field is chasing it is hard to hold them off. I think we did a great job to make it all the way to the finish." While Discovery Channel held onto their lead in the overall, their lead in the points classification was lost, with Allan Davis not making the time cut after putting all his energy into today's chase. Jens Voigt takes over that jersey and is tied with stage one winner Graem Browne (Rabobank). Voigt picked up ten seconds of bonus with the stage win, adding to the three seconds he earned winning the only intermediate sprint out of the early breakaway. This thirteen seconds vaulted him up the general classification to just three seconds behind Leipheimer, who took a six second bonus for second, setting up an interesting race at the top of the overall with the decisive time trial two days away. "Today decided the front group, and the time trial will decide who wins the race," said Leipheimer about the overall classification. "The race isn’t over until the fat lady sings!" joked Voigt. "we don’t have expressions like that in German so I like to say that one. The race is still really open. Yesterday we had a fantastic win with JJ and today we were a little bit lucky." As for his chances against Leipheimer in the time trial on Friday, Voigt said, "We are a little in the unknown so it is going to be hard to see how the time trial is going to go. I had a pretend time trial at camp and I was second to Cancarella so I might have a good time trial." An additional boost to Discovery Channel's motivation came in the form of "The Boss" Lance Armstrong showing up and riding part of the course in the team car. "We knew that there would be some selection on the climb and Levi showed that he, along with Chris Horner, seem to be the two stronger guys in the race," he said. "It is going to come down to the time trial now. [Levi] has been in this situation before and we like his chances." "Anything can happen tomorrow because tomorrow's stage is a long the coast and it will be windy all day long," he continued. "I like Levi’s chances to win the time trial. He is from here and he wants to win his first race for the team. It is no secret that we are looking for a title sponsor so we want to win this."
How it unfoldedThe group consisted of: Jurgen Van De Walle (Quick Step-Innergetic), Mauro Da Dalto (Liquigas), Jens Voigt (Team CSC), Bram De Groot (Rabobank), Charly Wegelius (Liquigas), Steven Cozza and William Frischkorn (Team Slipstream p/b Chipotle), Nicolar Reistad (Jelly Belly ), Kirk O'Bee and Shawn Milne (Health Net Presented By Maxxis), Mads Kaggestad (Credit Agricole), Kyle Gritters (Health Net p/b Maxxis), Mike Sayers (BMC), Jason McCartney (Discovery), Torsten Hiekmann (Gerolsteiner) as well as Aaron Olsen and Jakob Piil (T-Mobile). This break made for some nervous work back in the peloton, as riders such as Voigt posed a threat to Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel) in the overall. As well, some players in the mountain classification were present, such as Jurgen Van De Walle who was only three points behind Thomas Peterson (Team Slipstream p/b Chipotle). "With Tom Peterson in the jersey we had to challenge Jurgen for the points, who was unfortunately in the break with us -- the one guy we didn't want to see," said teammate Will Frischkorn, who took the maximum points on the first KOM to protect Peterson's lead. "We essentially just played off of him. It made it tough for us, but I got the points over the top." However, Van De Walle took second which puts him in a tie with Peterson, each with sixteen points. After descending down the the hill the break tried to settle in to a rhythm. But a few kilometers later Jason McCartney (Discovery Channel) put the hurt on, attacking on a smaller unrated climb. With about 150 meter gap J-Mac looked around and saw he had nobody with him, eventually sitting up. But this would be a foreshadowing of what would come later. About two-thirds of the way into the stage the course rejoined last year's course, winding around the Calaveras Reservoir along a difficult and narrow road that pitched slightly upwards for around fifteen kilometers. Half-way through this section, Health Net-Maxxis' Shawn Milne decided he had a chance to make a move, and attacked out of the break. "I was hoping someone would come with me," Milne said after the race. "We had pre-ridden the course from that point on, and I new it was really twisty, so a couple of guys away could do well. I knew McCartney had been sitting on and Voigt is a ridiculously strong guy -- if they came with me we would be good to go." Milne dangled off the front with about thirty seconds. At this point the chasing Discovery Channel team was aided by Rabobank, which cut the breakaway's lead in half. Milne decided to stay solo in an effort to survive at least to the Sierra Road climb. " I was thinking about sitting up but then the gap was plummeting, so then I just gave it a go." Down off the Reservoir Milne and the chasing breakaway reached speeds well above fifty mph, while the peloton continued to pull back the time. Into Milpitas the road flattened out as the second KOM loomed ahead. Making the left turn onto Sierra Road, Milne was caught and passed by the breakaway, with the peloton right on their heels. "I thought maybe I could sit in with those lead guys on the climb, but that is just such a different world," Milne said about the speed of the ProTour riders. "I'm still amazed that Jens stayed away! I was maybe twenty seconds behind them when the field caught me and for them to just keep going, it's unbelievable. I guess I have some work to do." At this point the race flipped on its ear, just like last year. McCartney and Voigt led the remnants of the break up the crowded early slopes, setting a pace that sent the others back to the peloton. T-Mobile's Aaron Olsen was one of those riders. "I was hoping to make it over in the lead groups, but I was content where I finished. It was good to see the crowds. Tim Johnson actually said to me, 'Can you believe where we are at? These crowds are incredible!'" After the steep initial pitches the climb eased off a bit. A group of five held the lead, consisting of: Voigt, De Groot, McCartney, Piil and Kaggestad. Close behind was a chasing group of sixteen which included Leipheimer. As the climb wore on the numbers dwindled, and over the top it was only Leipheimer leading McCartney, Voigt, Gesink and Horner. These five dove down the narrow and tricky descent back to the town of Milpitas along the same roads as earlier, before heading in the opposite direction towards the finish in San Jose. Along the flats towards downtown the five riders kept a high pace to hold off the reassembling peloton. McCartney did what he could to work for Leipheimer but was out of gas in the end. "I was cooked for the finish and I was just really cooked for the end. I’ve been riding on the front for the past few days so I’m feeling tired." But a bonus for this, in the eyes of Horner, was McCartney riding Gesink backwards from the lead. "I never saw the Rabobank guy because he never took a pull!" he laughed. "Frankly, I don't understand his strategy because it would have been better for him to work. Then in the finish you can't play cat and mouse with Jason McCartney, sitting on his wheel -- so Jason just rode him straight out of the break." With those two riders out of the picture, the sprint was set up between Voigt, Leipheimer and Horner. Voigt had the most to gain with the bonuses on the line, while Horner and his team are here purely for stage wins. "Our strategy [today] was just to do nothing," said Horner. "We are here to win stages -- my time trialing has been letting me down a little, and to win GC is not something I was thinking about. I was just thinking about winning today." "Today I picked Levi’s wheel because I was hoping he would jump sooner to and force Voigt to go," Horner continued. "But he never jumped and therefore Voigt had a full acceleration all the way to the line and I am never going to win that way. A stage like today is perfect for me, but of course I screwed up on the finish." Voigt was just too strong and easily took the win, similar to the gap his teammate Haedo won by yesterday. Tomorrow's stage is a long and winding drag down the Pacific Coast Highway. Rain and temperatures in the high forties are forecast for tomorrow, which should add a little more uncertainty to the race.
