Tour of California - 2.HCUSA, February 18-25, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - February 20: Santa Rosa to Sacramento, 187.2kmCSC delivers Haedo to third career Cali winDiscovery protects Leipheimer's jerseyBy Mark Zalewski in Sacramento, with additional reporting from Kirsten Robbins
"Yesterday I couldn't sprint because I had to brake 200 meters to the line and lost all my momentum," Haedo told Cyclingnews about yesterday's sprint finish. "Today we were trying to make the final stretch with out any problems. Thanks to my teammates and Stuey, they did a great job today. It is totally different having them as a lead out. When I say go, they go – at 60 kilometres per hour!" Haedo said he was a watched man, having taken out two sprints in last year's race. "Everyone was fighting me in the sprint and it got a little bit messy but it cleaned up after the last corner because it was more of a straightaway. I had Stuey in front of me and he went in the right moment and from there to the line it was just like drag racing. I told him at 350 meters to go -- I felt like that was a good moment." On the laps before the finish a strong effort was made by teams like Navigators Insurance, T-Mobile and Quick Step-Inergetic. With one to go it was Predictor-Lotto's Chris Horner leading his teammate Freddie Rodriguez on the front, but the two alone could not match the numbers of the other teams. "I was on a good wheel [Horner] and thought I had to play it a little conservative -- following Hushovd fighting for Bettini's wheel. Right before the sprint I thought I was still sitting in good position, but then Rabobank came back on the right side and actually hit me, so I had to lock it up, and lost four positions." The rest of the Predictor-Lotto team was back in the pack, not used to racing in a criterium-style finish. "I don't think my team knows how to race up front -- the don't understand this criterium style of racing, that it is actually easier on them to stay up front. Every time I rode anywhere not in the top twenty it was so much harder. Up front you can just float on wheels instead of locking it up in every turn. Of course you have to be stronger but it is a lot easier. Tomorrow is a straight in run so we should have a better shot there."
Before the catch, Slipstream-Chipotle's Danny Pate made his usual time trial attack, hoping for some favourable conditions from the cycling gods. But it was not to be. "I was hoping for some lucky things that didn't happen -- like a break in the wind, but it didn't happen," said Pate. "There was no wind break out there. Sometimes on a technical course one of two guys can do it as fast as a whole team. But none of that played into my hands today." Leipheimer was happy to have a much less exciting day in the leader's jersey today, which was due in large part to his team patrolling the front of the peloton. "I’ve never been a part of a team that is as strong as Discovery Channel and the race dictated our pace," he said. "Trinity Grade was actually a tough climb, and the race split up a little bit -- there were some riders who were dropped for a while. Once we got through the twisty turny part before the valley there was a really strong cross tail wind which is the worst kind because it can ignite the race." The NorCal resident knows that tomorrow's stage, which culminates with the climb up Sierra Road, will be much harder to control than today. "I am taking it day by day because there are a lot of strong riders out there just waiting in the wings... tomorrow is a decisive stage." But the decisive stage is Thursday's time trial. "Tomorrow is not the end all result of the whole race but we are expecting attacks from kilometer zero. Last year I felt like I didn’t have the team power to help after the climb so I attacked hoping to bring with me as little number of riders as possible, but they came back to Floyd and me." How it unfolded
After a lengthy neutral section the racing started quick, with two opportunistic continental riders, Omer Kem (Priority Health) and David McCann (Colavita-Sutter Home), attacking in the first kilometer. Colavita-Sutter Home director sportif told Cyclingnews that he is using the Chicago style of voting for his race instructions, telling his riders to attack early and often. The two riders were aided in their early break effort by Credit Agricole's Christophe Laurent and the three riders rode to the first KOM climb of the day, expanding their lead to more than five minutes. On the climb, it was Laurent setting the pace and eventually riding away from the other two, taking maximum points. On the second climb, Laurent attacked again, putting himself into second place in the KOM competition and giving him the most aggressive riders jersey. Back in the peloton it was all Discovery Channel with riders such as Tony Cruz and Allan Davis setting the pace while Leipheimer sat comfortably as the sixth wheel. Throughout the stage the gap fluctuated, with the Discovery-controlled field sometimes hitting the gas and other times smartly laying off. "They knew when to be strong or speed up and also when to calm down," Leipheimer said of his team. After the KOM climbs were out of the way, the rest of the stage was pancake flat, with two intermediate sprints before the finish. Discovery Channel smartly let the gap remain until the second sprint, in order to protect Alby Davis' points jersey lead. Inside the final twenty-five kilometers the field had brought the break to within sight, which had lost Kem ten kilometers before. All seemed set for a catch when Danny Pate (Slipstream-Chipotle) jumped across in one of his signature moves.
The finishing circuits were shorter than yesterday's, with a lot of turns, but using wider roads. At first there was little organization, and the peloton filled the entire streets, setting up some dangerous turns. But eventually teams such as T-Mobile and Quick Step started pushing the pace. This helped thin-out the front. On the first of three laps, Navigators Insurance put five riders on the front, led by Sergey Lagutin. The team lasted more than a lap trying to set-up Hilton Clarke. But it was one lap too early with Quick Step, CSC and T-Mobile overtaking the train. Again disorganization seemed to put the peloton in danger in the tight circuits. Then Chris Horner hit the front with teammate Freddie Rodriguez in tow. Horner piloted around the course, keeping his American teammate close behind. But again, it was not to be. Around the final turns, CSC moved up bringing their new aquisition, 'Jota' Haedo, to the front. "We were talking a lot before the sprint," said Haedo. "I was following Stuey [O'Grady] and just telling him where to go." Around the final turn it was Thor Hushovd and O'Grady launching Haedo to the line from 350 meters for the easy win. "It feels good to win against the other sprinters here," said Haedo. "I came here knowing that I have a strong team and great training for fifteen days. When you are thinking that you are on the best team in the world you have to have some confidence and that they believe in you is enough to know that you can do it."
