Prologue - February 18: San Francisco ITT, 3.1 km
Leipheimer does it again; Donald hangs on until the final second

Levi Leipheimer, Discovery Channel's race favourite has made it back to back wins in the Tour of California prologue with a winning time of 4:49:05 over the 3.1 km course - four seconds better than his winning time last year. He barely broke Jason Donald (Slipstream presented by Chipotle) time of 4:50:01 and Ben Jacques Maynes' (Priority Health) 4:54:00.
Jason Donald dazzled the media after the event with his star struck awe of the second placed position he had put himself into so early in the race. "There are those times where it just all comes together and it is hard to believe, but it is just one of those days," Donald said. "It is hard to believe that Levi Leipheimer has to worry about me – probably not much longer than today though."
"I look back on the prologue now and it is all a blur. With fifty meters to go I saw 4:48, 4:49 and I knew that was fast. I just figured it wouldn't hold up and the race was going to be much fast than last year. These guys are amazing athletes and for anyone to be putting me on that same level is an honor and very hard to believe."
Donald and Jacques-Maynes were two of the earliest riders to set off along the Embarcadero and up Telegraph hill to Coit Tower this afternoon when wind conditions were favorable. "I think the wind conditions favored the early riders today because you could see the times getting slower and slower during the day," Jacques Maynes said. "So it was our team plan to position a good time trial rider first."

Both American riders surprised themselves and the estimated 300,000 spectators when the best riders in the world continued to cross the finish line with slower times, including the road world champion from Quick Step Paolo Bettini and the time trial world champion, Team CSC's Fabian Cancellara. When the final rider, Leipheimer, began his prologue Donald's time has yet to be beat.
"It was a surprise that people were not able to beat his time but this is the next generation of cyclists that the USA is bringing along, and for them to be able to take part in the Amgen TOC next to the world champions this is an amazing experience for them," Leipheimer said.
Winning the Amgen Tour of California prologue may have been a surprise to Leipheimer last year but this year a tornado couldn't stop him from winning the leaders jersey. He will be racing into his hometown crowd of Santa Rosa for the second time, the biggest motivating factor behind today's win. "For all Americans, having our families here to support us is what motivates us so much to take part of the Amgen Tour of California," Leipheimer said. "It is a great way to start the year and for me it is a very important race and it is a very important race to the Discovery Channel team. It means a lot to me to bring the leaders jersey into my hometown again."

Leipheimer added, "I had a lot more pressure this year. Last year I wanted to do a great prologue but I didn't expect to win and this year I expected myself to win and so did a lot of other people. The pressure mounted a little bit because Johan came back from following the race and said that the wind had changed direction – a lot of the favorites were not able to set the time set by Jason Donald. But, I felt great, prepared and I wanted to give it everything I had, without negative thoughts."
The fans went crazy with the suspense as Leipheimer approached the finish line and the clock was ticking closer to Donald's time. In the end it came down to little more than one second between the neo-pro and the veteran. "When I was near the finish people were throwing their hands up and cheering so loud, and when you see that and hear that - oh man - you almost start to float," Leipheimer said. "At that point I wished the climb was an extra kilometer because I felt like I could keep going with all the support."

Three of the four race jerseys were handed to the athletes on the gold podium stage. Leipheimer put on the gold leaders jersey in front of his family and friends. Taylor Tolleson (Slipstream presented by Chipotle) was presented the best young rider jersey at the age of twenty-one. "Being the youth in the sport, normally I would never get to see the world champions or race against them," Tolleson said. "There are a lot of really tough guys here and I am really looking forward to racing with them this week."
Brian Sheedy (Priority Health) landed the KOM jersey to start the event, based on the time from the hard turn coming into the climb to the finish. The most aggressive riders jersey was not handed out for the prologue.
Tomorrow morning, the riders will start from Sausalito, just across the bay from San Francisco, over Mt. Tam and then along the Pacific Coast and over the Coleman Valley Rd. climb into the Santa Rosa streets.
