The final stage of the Tour of California was once again a fast circuit race - this time on part of the auto Grand Prix course. A long breakaway of seven made the race interesting into the final kilometres - even more interesting was the fact that it consisted of six continental team riders, showing the ProTour teams that they wanted a piece of the pie. Even though the break was caught in the end, the continental teams were not done, with the 'Cuban missile' Ivan Dominguez (Toyota-United) upsetting the Team CSC and Rabobank lead-out trains to win the field sprint.

"I was not so good all week with heavy legs and I wasn't riding quite so good this week," Dominguez told Cyclingnews after the race. "Today I felt much better and today in our team meeting we were talking about having a podium place today, maybe not winning but a second or third place would be good. It feels so good to win a stage here in the Tour of California. Coming into the last 300 meters I saw J.J. and passed him - he was trying to get in there but he saw me and that I was already there."

"That is why we have him on the team," said Toyota-United director sportif Harm Jansen. "We hired him for those three or four occasions a year where he can pull it off big." When asked about the performance of the domestic teams this week, Jansen was enthusiastic. "Look at yesterday - we had two riders who came from domestic teams going first and second. Cycling has changed here in the US. We have all these big races now and it is different."

Asked if he felt pressure to repeat last year's performance, Jansen said that he did not, but was still relieved to get a win here. "Of course we feel an enormous amount of relief, but there is a lot of homework that goes into it."

Cruising in for a less hectic win today was Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel) who held the race lead from day one. "I felt great this morning, very relieved and very satisfied," he said. "It is one of the most satisfying victories for me because of the way that the team rode. With the amount of pressure we had on us and being able to lead from the very beginning to the very end was something very special."

"Having the win here in California in front of my family is a bit like a fairy tale," he continued. "I told Jens Voigt thanks for a great race because I don't know if we could have more of a nail biter type race - it was really tough out there!"

Even though he could not make it three wins this week, Juan Jose Haedo (Team CSC) took home the sprinter's points jersey for his efforts. "I am very happy - it is a huge start for the team and a huge start for me," he said. "I am happy with it because it is going to give me and us a lot of confidence going into the season."

Joining in his confidence was teammate Stuart O'Grady, who says that despite not taking the leader's jersey yesterday, he was happy with the team's performance this week. "We came here with the objective of going for the overall," he said. "But getting three stage wins plus second, fourth, fifth, sixth, the overall team classification and the sprinters jersey was a superb week. We've come from a really hard training camp and it was hard. But the hard days are paying off and we've come away from this with way more than expected and we are all very happy."

Another Team CSC rider, Bobby Julich, had commented at last year's final press conference that he was disappointed in the performance of the domestic teams, save for Jonathan Vaughters' TIAA-CREF team. This year, Julich gave slightly higher marks to the domestic teams, mostly through admitting that there are different levels for some teams. But he once again gave the highest marks to Vaughters' Slipstream-Chipotle team. "I was pretty impressed with Jonathan's team, but I guess you just have to not plan on winning a stage and instead get out and attack - and those guys did a good job of that.

"There is a huge gap still between the European pros and the American pro teams, but we just got done with a training camp and for these younger guys it is only February. I don't want to be too hard on them, but I was disappointed that only two riders from our national team finished the race. The Tour of California is being gracious in letting younger riders in and not being exclusively ProTour only teams, to give them a chance. And this is their chance, this is it. This is where J.J. was discovered and Tour de Georgia is where Jason [McCartney] was discovered."

Still, seeing the domestic teams dominating the day's breakaway, and a domestic team rider taking the field sprint, was all part of these teams attempting to make the most of their race. "It's about sponsors, getting out there and making a race of it for the crowd," explained Health Net's Karl Menzies. "Keeping them on the edge of their seat the whole time."

How it unfolded

Riders were greeted with overcast skies, but luckily only the hint of rain, and by race time, the sun started to cut through the clouds, allowing many riders to shed the arm warmers and vests. The 12.1km out-and-back circuit used portions of the Long Beach Grand Prix circuits, compete with concrete barriers and overhead pedestrian walkways. This helped create a fast atmosphere, aided by the large grandstands of crowds.

Even though there was hardly any elevation gain, the consistent wind off of San Pedro Bay gave a nice tailwind out and a grueling headwind back. "It was so windy and brutal," said Tim Johnson (Health Net-Maxxis). "It was a flat course but no way!"

From the start the action ensued, with attacks coming straight away from Slipstream-Chipotle followed by Health Net-Maxxis. It was clear that the domestic teams were intent on giving the ProTour teams a battle on the final stage. Slipstream's Danny Pate was one of the break initiators, along with Tim Johnson. This aggressiveness by Pate, combined with riding in the long break yesterday and overall aggressiveness by him and his team all week gave him the honour of most aggressive rider for the tour.

After a few bridge attempts a group of seven formed, with six domestic riders: Steven Cozza and Danny Pate (Slipstream-Chipotle), Karl Menzies and Tim Johnson (Health Net-Maxxis), Sean Sullivan (Toyota-United), Ben Jacques-Maybes (Priority Health), and one ProTour rider in Adam Hansen (T-Mobile).

This group worked well early on, pulling hard on the way out to make use of the tailwind, and then taking short pulls on the way back to help beat the headwind. "At the beginning we were just making sure we had someone in the break," said Johnson. "If it went to the end for sure I was going to work for Karl."

Also in the break for the second time this week was Sean Sullivan (Toyota-United). "It was hard... I'm still trying to recover from the breaks I was in the other day. I tried to give Ivan a bit of an easier ride - I knew it was probably going to come back." At one point he and Menzies passed a Coke between them out on the course, keeping their energy high. "You know, you gotta look after each other - Tassie boys!" joked Menzies.

Back in the peloton, it was no surprise to see Discovery Channel lined up on the front, with Leipheimer tucked away for safety. Even though the team was down one with George Hincapie suffering a broken wrist from yesterday's crash, the entire team looked to be taking even pulls on the front - from Basso to Danielson to hometown boy Tony Cruz. The high speed of the circuit was evident by the snaking, single-file line of the entire peloton. This also indicated that the gap to the break had reached nearly three minutes, giving Danny Pate the virtual yellow jersey on the road.

All week long the rest of the teams had made Discovery Channel do the work reeling back the breaks, except for the final kilometres of yesterday's stage when Health Net-Maxxis pitched in to close the deal. However, once Discovery had brought the virtual jersey back to Leipheimer, every team not represented in the break was working for a field sprint finish.

First it was the new BMC team putting four of its riders into the Discovery rotation up front. This brought the gap down to a little more than two minutes. Next it was a mix of Rabobank and Credit Agricole riders taking turns in place of Discovery riders. Eventually, Discovery Channel was able to sit back and take a breather as the laps counted down to three, and then two remaining.

Up front the breakaway still tried to keep the pace consistent, even though the headwind was taking a larger toll. "It was going alright, but the other guys must have thought we would make it to the finish and sort of half worked," said Hansen. "If you don't put 100% in you are not going to go anywhere. I don't know if it is inexperience or what - but when we had made ground they said it was enough work."

The gap fluctuated in the closing laps, hovering around a minute, as the peloton tried to control the catch to prevent counter attacks. Into the final lap the gap was under a minute and the end was in sight. Even with the peloton in sight, Karl Menzies decided it was not yet time to put up the white flag, as he put in a suicide dig off the front. "When he made that attack at the end and I couldn't believe it!" said teammate Tim Johnson, who was cracking from the headwind.

"When there is a bunch sprint coming and you have been riding out front all day you are not going to have any legs for a sprint," said Menzies. "We were probably too cooked to even help out the guys. Tim just drove the break and I was able to just roll through and keep it consistent. I've had shit legs all tour and finally had good legs today - just floating on the pedals. I thought if I got out there and we could get three guys out there we could do it - but only Hansen came up to me and he had sprinters to think about behind."

As the two pushed against the headwind, the field came around and past - led by Rabobank, T-Mobile, CSC and Gerolsteiner.

Points leader Juan Jose Haedo (Team CSC) was safely tucked into a row of teammates, as was Graeme Brown (Rabobank) and Robert Forster (Gerolsteiner). As the sprint played out it was CSC controlling the front with four riders ahead of Haedo. But as the riders swung off the speed of the peloton seemed to be too much. On the outside of the CSC train, Rabobank began its own lead-out for Brown - and on the outside of them it was Gerolsteiner.

"We set a really high pace coming into five kilometers to go but unfortunately at the end there I caught one of the biggest hooks in my career," said O'Grady. "I was very lucky to have all my body still intact. We got whipped out by the Gerolsteiner lead out team. It was a very fast finish with a lot of guys desperate to get a stage win - it was a really high risk finish."

"Gerolsteiner were coming up in the outside, so it was either commit to the sprint then or get swamped," said Brown. "It was around 250 meters so it was a little early." On Brown's wheel was Ivan Dominguez, freelancing his way through the swarm, and popping out at the right time to put the bike throw across the line for the first domestic team win of the race.

"For me it is better if I find my own way in a sprint," said Dominguez. "With four laps to go I found Graeme Brown's wheel and I stayed there. When we started the sprint he just took me all the way to the finish."
