Breakaway threatens, but Discovery holds Levi's lead

With a lead increased from three seconds to twenty-one on his closest rival, and minute or more on the rest, one might think that the final road stage of the Tour of California would be calmer for race leader Levi Leipheimer and the Discovery Channel team. Think again. A large and dangerous breakaway escaped early in the stage and lasted until the finishing circuits in Santa Clarita, with Stuart O'Grady (Team CSC) serving as race leader on the road for much of the stage.

But Discovery Channel put the pedal to the floor and reeled the break in enough to eventually enlist help from other teams. And out of the scrum that was the field sprint came Juan Jose Haedo (Team CSC) to take his second stage of this edition and fourth stage in Tour of California history.

"The last lap is like any other race and everyone wants to be at the front," Haedo told Cyclingnews after the race. "I just stuck close to my team and then got behind Thor Husovd in the final sprint. It was just a hard drag race to the line."

The final kilometre was controlled by four Gerolsteiner riders, working for Robert Förster. "Normally it was perfect in the final kilometre," said Förster. "Wrolich rode to the final kilometre mark, then Fabian Wegmann took a long time on the front -- maybe 500 metres, then Kruass pushed until 230 metres. But it was too long with a little headwind and uphill -- my 53/11 was a little too hard and at the 100 metre mark I felt it, losing a little power."

Then out of the swarm of riders came Haedo, darting on the inside and taking the final metres. "I just found my way a little bit with Jens Voigt again and ended up on Thor’s wheel with 500 meters to go," said Haedo. "I had a good position and I knew it was a head wind and a little but up hill so I waited a little longer than usual."

Also in the fight for the line was Fred Rodriguez (Predictor-Lotto), but he somehow knocked into Förster in the closing metres, slowing him enough to take him out of the sprint. "As they came by Rodriguez's foot ended up in my front wheel!" said Förster. "I was just trying to get Freddie into the last corner clean," Rodriguez's teammate Chris Horner said. "I got him there with 100 metres to go. Freddie said he had a clean line but then bumped with one of the Gerolsteiner rider in the end."

Coming in second place for the second time was Kiwi Greg Henderson (T-Mobile). "It was close again," he said. "I was originally going to lead out Gerald but he lost my wheel and when I looked back for him I could see he was caught too far behind. One hundred meters to go I was in the lead and fifty meters to go I was winning. Then in the very end, J.J. came past. This time the line was too far away, where as last time the line was too close."

"Being second three times in a row is frustrating," Henderson admitted. "We have proved that we are consistently fast but just not fast enough on the day. I can say personally speaking it is quite frustrating but we can only look to improve. I’m pretty confident that we can win. We’ve been close on three occasions now."

Discovery Channel had to spend a lot of energy today keeping O'Grady within reach. They also took a hit with an unfortunate crash in the opening kilometres that occured right in front of the yellow jersey, with Tony Cruz touching Ivan Basso's wheel, sending the Long Beach local down and American champion George Hincapie tumbling after him. Both riders got up and rejoined the race, both finishing. However, an x-ray of Hincapie's wrist revealed a fracture, which will keep him from starting tomorrow's final stage.

The crash occurred just as attacks were flying off the front, so an organized slow-down did not happen -- something that Leiheimer said was another indication of the mentality towards the team. "Everyone came out with all guns firing to crack us. It was a very, very hard race. The attacks were happening fast when we had some difficulty with Tony and Hincapie," he said. "We were trying to contain everything until they got back but it was taking forever. There were groups everywhere. The race was in pieces and it was really everyone against us today. We stuck together but it was really unbelievable. I was hoping that guys would be polite and wait, but that is bike racing."

The Discovery Channel team knows it will not get any easier as the race winds up with a fast and flat circuit race around Long Beach tomorrow -- especially being down one rider in Hincapie. "Tomorrow is going to be fast so we have to stay concentrated and take this all the way to the line," said Leipheimer. "They will all come out attacking again so we really need to stay focused for tomorrow."

One race did conclude today, the king of the mountains. Christophe Laurent (Credit Agricole) took the honours after a hard fought finale with four rated climbs on the stage. "Van de Walle from Quick Step was very motivated today to get points today," said Laurent. In the beginning the first climbs weren't as bad because there was a break up the road. But when it regrouped it was much more difficult." In regards to his win, Laurent said. "I am very pleased because the climbing was quite challenging!"

How it unfolded

The race started on the waterfront in Santa Barbara and climbed neutral out of town. Like last year's stage out of Santa Barbara, the 0km mark was once again near the top of a winding and fast descent. And from the blow of the commissaire's whistle the attacks started in earnest. Discovery Channel did not want a repeat of stage three and responded immediately. Tony Cruz jumped to cover the attack, but rubbed wheels with teammate Ivan Basso, causing him to crash and taking out teammate George Hincapie.

The two riders got up and rode themselves back into the peloton, but the slow-down caused the gap to the attacking riders to increase slightly. Shawn Milne (Health Net-Maxxis) and Mauricio Alberto Ardila Cano (Rabobank) joined up and built a sizeable gap through the flats along many citrus groves.

On the first KOM, Ardila Cano jumped ahead of Milne to take the points while attacks came out of the peloton behind. Christophe Laurent (Credit Agricole) was battling all day for the points to secure his mountains jersey, and took the third place on the climb. On the second KOM, which was just four kilometres later, Ardila Cano took the lead again over Milne, and actually went solo over the top while Milne decided to wait for the group.

Back in the field it was obvious that the chasing was full-on, as the peloton split into two large groups. Ardila Cano held his lead after the second KOM but the first 'peloton' held him in sight. Into the town of Ojai Ardila Cano was caught and the pace quickened as Team CSC tried to increase the lead of points leader Juan Jose Haedo. But it was Sergey Lagutin (Navigators Insurance) taking the maximum points ahead of Graeme Brown (Rabobank) and Stuart O'Grady (Team CSC).

Out of Ojai a group of six rolled off the front, with two pairs of chasers trying to come across. The group of five, led by Stuart O'Grady (Team CSC) eventually waited for the four chasers, to make a group of nine, with: Mathew Hayman (Rabobank), Michael Rogers (T-Mobile), Bram Tankink and Giovanni Visconti (Quick Step-Innergetic), Enrico Gasparotto (Liquigas), Josep Jufre Pou (Predictor-Lotto), Viktar Rapinski (Navigators Insurance) and Danny Pate (Team Slipstream p/b Chipotle).

The entire break worked well for most of the way, climbing up the final KOM -- a very underrated category four up Balcolm Canyon, which saw some of the largest crowds last year. The crowds did not dissapoint this year, with 'The Pope' even coming out for a look. Out of this group O'Grady posed the biggest threat, only sitting 1:20 behind Leipheimer. And it was clear that Team CSC was trying to take the leader's jersey away with this move. O'Grady put every ounce of energy into the break, encouraging his new 'teammates' to work when the gap of more than three minutes began to diminish from the efforts of Discovery Channel.

The final descent of the day came a few kilometres later -- a fast and open road with sweeping turns that saw the riders reaching some of their highest speeds of the week. Unfortunately, Danny Pate was not able to enjoy the roads. "I had a flat tire on that so it wasn't so cool!" he said. "I had like 40psi in my rear tire and had to ride down it, through the turns really slow, and then catch back on in the straights. You can't stop when you are going 90kph an hour because you won't catch back on."

After a wheel change on the bottom it was flat roads all the way into Santa Clarita. The gap slowly fell as the chase continued in earnest. However, O'Grady was not done, taking long pulls yelling at the other riders to keep going. Into the three finishing circuits the break still held an advantage of just more than a minute. At this point, with the virtual jersey back on Leipheimer's shoulders, other teams started to help with the chase, hoping to put their guy across the line in a field sprint. Health Net-Maxxis sent most of their team to the front to help, and the gap inched closer and closer.

With one lap complete the break still survived, with Michael Rogers (T-Mobile) taking a huge pull. But not everyone was pulling evenly, and the attacks from the break signaled its demise, even with less than five kilometres remaining. Taking over from the chase was T-Mobile with a few riders on the front. But in the final lap, Gerolsteiner had the best organisation with four riders lined up in a row, protecting Robert Förster. As each one peeled off the pace quickened, keeping the sprinting safe behind. But with 250 metres to go Förster was left alone, and the chasing sprinters caught and passed him.

On the inside, waiting in the wings, was Juan Jose Haedo, flying by untouched to take the win and increase his lead in the points competition. "I didn’t expect it to be a field sprint to be honest," said Haedo. "I thought the break would stay way with about thirty seconds. But even with thirty kilometers to go, I started to prepare myself for a sprint."

Haedo was unsure if his team will try to protect the sprint jersey tomorrow, or go for another stage win outright. "I don’t know if I will be going for points tomorrow. We didn’t had a team meeting yet and so I will tell you tomorrow!"

Tomorrow's final stage is a fast circuit race around Long Beach, in front of the Queen Mary. Stay with Cyclingnews for all of the live updates and the final recap of the racing!
