3rd Eneco Tour of Benelux - ProTNetherlands & Belgium, August 22-29, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - August 24: Anvers (Bel) - Knokke-Heist (Bel), 199.1kmYoung old-school sprinter Cavendish unbeatableBy Brecht Decaluwé in Knokke, with additional reporting form Susan Westemeyer The second stage finish of the Eneco Tour looked like a Tour de France Champs Élysées finish since fashionable Knokke was ready for a top-class bunch sprint finish in front of its casino near the North Sea coast. Instead of mulitple Tour stage winner Robbie McEwen battling it out for the sprint, it was his American team-mate Fred Rodriguez who muscled his way to the line, but nobody could get the better of the young Manx-man, Mark Cavendish. The young T-Mobile sprinter once again proved he has two of the fastest legs in the peloton and this time the neo-professional showed the peloton his rear end in Knokke. "I'm an old-school sprinter," 22 year-old Cavendish stated, "I can't climb a mountain but if I am in front with 200 metres to go then there's nobody who can beat me." In his first year as a professional rider he has captured already eight sprint wins, and that's the number Cavendish showed the crowds when he crossed the finish line. "Robbie [McEwen] won eight races in his first year as a pro and now I'm matching that number," Cavendish smiled, "I hope to win 11 races this year, just like Alessandro Petacchi." The bunch sprint in Knokke was difficult one to control since there were a lot of corners and bumps in the final couple of kilometres. "The build-up to the sprint was dangerous and I was dropping back at one occasion but my team piloted me perfectly back to the front," Cavendish explained what happened when the peloton raged through the sunny and crowded streets of Knokke. "In a normal sprint you need to be brought to the front by the team with only 200 metres to go but today the trick was to be in the front at that difficult corner with one kilometre to go," the winner explained. "Hammond did that perfectly, it's fantastic to have someone like Hammond leading you out every time," Cavendish pointed out that he and his lead-out man Hammond are a perfect tandem. In the sprint he was bothered by a manoeuvre from Kenny Van Hummel. "Quick.Step came to the front and Van Hummel had the wheel of Weylandt but still he chopped my front wheel and I barely managed to stay on the bike, he's dangerous in a sprint." The Dutch sprinter from the Skil-Shimano team didn't feel he made a mistake and pointed instead towards Wouter Weylandt. "If he would've ridden a straight sprint then I would have won today," Van Hummel claimed, "and if the jury looks at the images then normally I'll be third instead of fourth." His prediction proved to be correct since the blonde sprinter from Quick.Step - Innergetic was quickly relegated to position 140 by the race jury for irregular sprinting. Cavendish downplayed the Dutch sprinter's claims. "Now I had about five bike lengths on Van Hummel so maybe he would've been at only one bike length in a regular sprint," Cavendish smiled. The peloton now takes a break in Knokke-Heist where the riders will start tomorrow for another flat stage towards the Antwerp region in Putte. How it unfolded161 riders took the start under partly cloudy skies in Antwerp, Belgium. Laurent Mangel of Ag2r didn't start, bringing his team down to only five riders. The French team brought only seven riders to the race, and Julien Loubet dropped out during yesterday's first stage. The peloton rolled along as a group at 40.5 km/h for the first hour, with no escape attempts. They came through the first intermediate sprint in this order: Leon Van Bon (Rabobank), Steven De Jongh (Quick.Step-Innergetic) and David Millar (Saunier Duval). That evidently woke a few people up, as shortly thereafter a 10-man group formed and rode away. Nine more riders joined them and they got a 20-second advantage. The group included Peter Van Petegem (Quick.Step), Nico Eeckhout (Chocolade Jacques), Maarten Tjallingii (Skil-Shimano), Manuel Quinziato (Liquigas) and Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole). Vladimir Gusev of Discovery Channel, who flatted twice yesterday before crashing and ripping open his pants and his thigh, tried to jump to the escape group but he soon realized he wouldn't make it and was re-absorbed into the peloton. The group built its lead up to one minute as it hit the day's first ranked climb. Milram's Marcel Sieberg came over it first, followed by Aart Vierhouten of Skil-Shimano and T-Mobile's Servais Knaven. Sieberg kept on going and built up a lead of about 10 seconds before being joined by Frederik Willems (Liquigas), Rubén Pérez (Euskaltel) and Andriy Grivko, also of Milram. Milram's nearly-two-metre man also won the second mountain ranking, with Pérez and Grivko crossing second and third. At 1.98m and 80 kilograms, Sieberg is not usually one for the climbs. The rest of the escape group faded back into the peloton and the leading four built up and maintained a lead of three to four minutes. With 69 kilometres to go, Luke Roberts of CSC flatted. He waited for the team car and got not only a new rear wheel, but a whole load of water bottles to carry up to his teammates. The lead was dropping and was now under three minutes with 60 kilometres to go. It dropped to two and half minutes as the four passed the second intermediate sprints, with Grivko, Willems and Pérez taking the points in that order. Beñat Albizuri of Euskaltel had to drop back to the medical car because of something in his eye – a tricky move to do from a moving bike and a moving car. The lead grew to around four minutes, and with 30 kilometres to go, Grivko couldn't keep up with the pace and had to drop off, leaving three in front. The last intermediate sprint was held at 18 kilometres to go and it was Willems, Pérez and Sieberg. By then the sprinters' teams had decided it was time to take action and the lead started falling rapidly. At the 10 kilometre marker the three were overtaken by the flying peloton. Rabobank moved to the front of the peloton with 6.5 kilometres to go. Shortly thereafter three Discovery riders took over the lead, but no one team was able to control things. David Cañada of Saunier Duval went flying, losing his front tire and hitting the pavement. Everyone was still together at two kilometres, with a Lampre rider taking over the lead work. A Lampre rider took a tumble at around one kilometre and landed on a grassy strip amongst the spectators and holding his side. Unibet.com opened the sprint and Quick.Step took over but it was T-Mobile's young Mark Cavendish who came up the middle to take the win, ahead of Fred Rodriguez (Predictor-Lotto) and Wouter Weylandt of Quick.Step.
