Tinkoff rides the wind to a win

The first stage of the Tour de Georgia got off to a quick start today thanks to the strong "nor' easter" storm in the upper Atlantic states, which resulted in strong southeasterly winds reaching all the way down to Georgia. With a southeast parcours to match the result was a stage averaging 46.5 kilometres per hour. The other result was that the peloton miscalculated the catch of the typical early breakaway, allowing Daniele Contrini (Tinkoff Credit Systems) to escape and survive solo to the line, taking the first leader's jersey of the race.

"My impression of American racing is positive," he said afterwards. "I raced here in 2005 and I am happy to be back. It is a really well organised event. The roads are great and there are no cars blocking the race. The race is fantastic and it was great for the Tinkoff team to have a win today."

Contrini crashed at Milan-San Remo and had a hard time training since then, according to his director. "He damaged his spine and back. He has not been able to train too hard until a short time ago. We are very happy with his win in light of his fitness and accident last month."

Contrini's teammate and team leader Tyler Hamilton was all smiles, happy for the team's win - something he says is important for the team in the US market. "It is an important market for Tinkoff Credit Systems," he said. "We were on the waiting list and weren't sure if we were going to get into the race but I am really happy that we did."

"Our director Dimetri was in the car following Contrini and that was great. He was a great rider too and just recently retired at the end of last year. He was the one who was behind telling Contrini exactly what to do and exactly where to attack and when. It proved to be very useful because Contrini was able to get away every time and win the race."

Health Net-Maxxis' Doug Ollerenshaw, second on the day, said that he was surprised Contrini was able to ride away from the break in the end. "It was a really hard break and I really wanted to hang on for the finish after all that. Daniele was very strong today and incredible. He did about eighty percent of the work bridging across to Rapinski initially and then kept taking huge pulls all the way to the end. I thought for sure he wasn't going to have anything left for the finish but he proved to be really strong."

Navigators Insurance had the slight advantage in the break today with two riders. But Rapinski's 40 kilometre solo effort negated the advantage in the end. "We wanted to be aggressive today and there are a lot of guys in the race that can do well in GC," said fellow break rider Ben Day. "We wanted to take an opportunity to gain an advantage over some of the top guys on the ProTour teams [with] as many guys in the break as possible. Doug and I did a good job working together to catch Daniele but in the end we couldn't do it. But I want to congratulate everyone in the break because we all did a good job out there today."

Contrini holds both the overall and sprint lead, with twenty-one seconds over second-place Ollerenshaw. Day sits in third place seven more seconds behind, while the rest of the field is a little more than one minute behind.

How it unfolded

The riders had a short roll across the highway from their hotel to the start line at the Peachtree City town hall. In fact, some riders were early enough that they sat on the lawn in front of the building, sipping coffee, and chatting away with fans. It was essentially "have a picnic with Tom Danielson, Tyler Hamilton and friends."

But the strong winds swirling around the start line was already having an impact, blowing tents and banners all over the place. Luckily for the riders, the race course was pointing mostly southeast, almost the same direction as the wind. From the opening kilometers the attacks ensued, mostly from the domestic teams looking to get in the early move. Adam Bergman (Colavita-Sutter Home) started the action with a solo attack. Jeff Louder (Health Net-Maxxis) and Austin King (Jittery Joe's) also tried moves, but in vain. These teams, along with Toyota-United and the European Professional Continental Tinkoff team, represented the early action.

A few kilometers later Kirk O'Bee (Health Net-Maxxis) jumped away with Viktor Rapinski (Navigators Insurance), Jonathan Garcia (BMC), Trent Wilson and Evan Elken (Jittery Joe's), Matt Goss (Team CSC), Christophe Brandt (Predictor-Lotto) and Hubert Schwab (Quick Step). This break hovered at 15 seconds and looked to have the riders to make it work, but again, the fast-moving peloton made short work of the uncooperative break.

The group

As the break fell apart Rapinski decided to go it alone just 50 kilometres into the race, and the peloton seemed to be content to let him have some rope. The strong eastern-European quickly rode the tailwind to a two minute lead heading into the first intermediate sprint, which he subsequently won with ease.

Behind him the peloton sprinted for the other places, which in turn, launched a bridging group of four consisting of Daniele Contrini (Tinkoff Credit Systems), Doug Ollerenshaw (Health Net), Ben Day (Navigators Insurance) and Mike Sayers (BMC). Matt Shriver (Jittery Joe's) tried some time later to cross the gap, but never quite made it. Into the feed zone the chasing group was only thirty seconds behind Rapinski who sat up to wait for the additional help.

Back in the peloton the motivation did not seem to be urgent, which could have been a lack of time splits, according to Toyota-United's Chris Wherry. "Viktor went away by himself and nobody cares about a guy going away by himself, even with a tailwind," he said. "The other group went away after the sprint - the guys were sprinting and just kept it rolling. Everyone looked around and decided to let it go. We weren't getting time splits from the race organisers, so it was hard to tell if we were gaining or losing time. Then the first time split I heard was six minutes. I think that was the number one factor today - the miscommunication. We wanted a group sprint today, and I think things got a little overestimated. "

The gap kept rising and at one point was reported to be near eight minutes - about the time that the peloton usually begins to take things seriously. A few teams looked to be trying to motivate the peloton to pull some time back. "CSC started chasing but then immediately pulled off," said Wherry. "Then Discovery started and we chucked in."

But the gap did not come down very quickly - thanks in large part to the fierce tailwind. "When you are going 60 km/h in a tailwind, it is hard to go 65," said Wherry. "The break is going as fast as everyone else!"

Eventually, Discovery Channel and Slipstream-Chipotle seemed to put a few riders on the front which ate away at the gap. But it was too much, and the break began to see Macon off in the distance. As the group of five entered the finishing circuits in Macon, the gap was still more than two minutes, and the organisers worried about spacing issues on the 2.55 mile circuit. However, a crash in the peloton just before the circuits slowed things down. "The first thing I saw after the crash was the ground," said Priority Health's Garrett Peltonen. No riders were seriously injured and all finished.

"We worked really evenly coming into the circuits and the first time up the climb Daniele attacked which got rid of Rapinski," said Ollerenshaw.

"I attacked over the hill and got away," said Contrini. "The other riders were very strong but it was up to me in the final to do what ever I could to win." Mike Sayers had also dropped away at this point and it was only Day and Ollerenshaw left to chase.

"Daniele then pulled the entire lap before the climb again," Ollerenshaw continued. "The second time up the climb I opened a gap from Contrini to make Ben Day work and that's when Daniele attacked us and got away. All he needed was that ten metre gap. He kept taking time out of us all the way to the line."

Contrini looked strong as he rode away, staying mostly in the drops. The final lap up the cobbled Plum Street climb he only got out of the saddle once to turn over his big ring. On the descent back to the finish Contrini was looking over his shoulder, starting to realise that he had stolen the stage from the sprinters.

Following Contrini was Ollerenshaw easily taking the sprint for second with Day holding on for third. Health Net's Ryder Hesjedal led the peloton in for fourth, more than a minute behind the leader.
